Did you know I have a You Can Homeschool course? The next installment You Can Teach Science is available TODAY on ClarifiEd I was a practicing university scientist for nearly 2 decades. I LOVE science, but I know itβs not everyoneβs most comfortable subject. In this post, I help you teach your kids science with confidence. No More Uncertainty, Just Thriving Kidsπ

If you've listened to sold a story, then you know that teaching children the whole language strategy literally teaches their brain to be "dyslexic." They have to be un-taught those terrible strategies. It's also possible that for some children they simply aren't around words or reading enough and their brains aren't taught how to process individual letters. It's actually an interesting question .. if not taught young how much harder is it to learn as an adult (obviously harder - been demonstrated) but can everyone do it? I'm not aware of studies that have looked at the ability to train this type of skill without exposure as a child. It's an interesting question!

Thanks for letting me know. The self-lead thing is what i'm interested in. I'd like my oldest to start exploring academic subjects that she's uniquely interested in and practicality-wise I need that to be more autonomous (also good long-term) Khan offers so much and for free thought it would be a nice place to start

@DaringGlory I love this image! Do you like the khan history? We are doing art history but just for fun - would be interested in exploring more of their offerings

@thisblessedAlys I would happily ditch Halloween tbh. Thinking about just throwing a costume party around the same time or similar.

I often feel alone in the alt ed community because I feel that having a strong, vibrant public option is actually very important. Sadly, not every parent is going to be 100% devoted to their kids' education. There are even legitimate reasons this can occur - illness, death. It's important that as a society we catch the kids who otherwise would fall through the cracks.

LOL - I thought the same thing. I was thinking well I'll look the window, the door, the stuffed animals in this room.. I have effectively 4 rooms in my house π€£. I will point out you can do memory palaces without a physical house. You can make an imaginary house in your mind - but I also think that's likely harder to explain to kids.
