It's not an exaggeration to say I'm passionate about music, especially of classical inspiration. Over time I've written a number of threads about Genshin's music, which is absolutely awesome and deserves all the attention. 👇You can find them all below

It'll feel so weird the day Genshin stops. It's really my comfort game where I can travel to so many gorgeous places and just admire the landscape and listen to the music, while thinking about the lore. It's a feeling I don't think I'll really find in any other game.

When people ask why Genshin's music is exceptional, I think the first reflex is to show the epic tracks, like Scaramouche or La Signora. And sure, it's part of the answer. But other games have very good boss fight musics. Now... which game has that?

This is something I really respect about Genshin. While a lot of players were mad at a "fake death", I quite appreciate that the game isn't going for shock value. In Genshin, "what" happens is often less important than "how", and the way it develops characters

Another thing, I actually liked that Xiao survived the ordeal in the end. You could accuse the quest of copping out by letting Zhongli swoop in to save him last minute, but I think it's sweeter that he came out of the arc learning something new about himself

I'll also add that Genshin has insane artistic moments that only mature people can fully appreciate. That's why so many players don't find Genshin's music "jammable" enough for example. And that's also why an infamous bald man managed to make fun of Yun Jin's singing.

I’m not saying I 100% agree or disagree, Genshin IS designed to attract the widest audience possible (this includes children), BUT for those interested Genshin actually has very dark lore the only thing is that most of it is in quest dialogue or text so they avoid having to show

🎼🧵How Fontaine's theme contains (almost) the whole story of Fontaine The story of Fontaine is all about fate. The prophecy, the trials, Focalors' plan... Everything unfolds like a theater play. And in fact, we had the script from the start: it was all in the music.

The boss fight OSTs obviously stand out, but the backbone of Genshin's music remains the overworld. And it's where you'll find the music that, IMO, really makes Genshin stand out. Chenyu Vale, the Chasm... so many tracks of Sumeru, that's where the real flavor lies.

A thing about Scara. The attention to details. Remember the line Nazo nagasare (何ぞ流され) that Scara sings during his boss battle? It's Old Japanese for "Why was I thrown away", as we know. However, the Old Japanese is a little weird here, and it's probably not a mistake.

It's really a mood to be underwater and listen to music featuring glass harp while chilling, then move to Enkanomiya, admire that land lost in the void while the sorrowful music echoes. Then move to Chenyu Vale and collect tea while listening to Chinese traditional instruments.

You could say that in Fontaine, the AQ plot revolved around the final reveal... But remember? The music told the story from the start. The interesting part isn't just the reveal about Focalors or the sin, it's how it all makes sense with everything that was hinted from the start

In Sumeru, Scara's defeat has some epicness to it, but in the end it's not really what matters. The only thing we all really are about is how Scara is going to develop. And him being canonly represented as a kitty shows us how he was depicted from the start

In Stormterror, there isn't even a battle theme playing. There's just that very melancholic music. And in the fight against Dvalin, the music is, on purpose, the opposite of epic. It just tells us how Venti's voice is trying to reach Dvalin

Mondstadt music may be not the greatest in the game, but like Mondstadt, it slowly, and gently, brings you into Teyvat without trying to impress you. I know I've already said that multiple times, but in many ways, when I think about Mondstadt, I hear: "Once upon a time..."

Another example of that distance is in Mondstadt. There's a real build up when you come to Stormterror, on your way to the fight against Dvalin. It's the first main boss of an area, and you're expecting it to be epic in some way... But the music warns you: it's not what it is.

There's something I really like about the whole fight against Arlecchino: it parodies the shonen anime style. First, there's the MC acting as the hero who'll change the outcome of the fight. Then, several shots like this, with the 😲face when their powerful attack doesn't work.

One of the many things that impressed my piano teacher about Genshin's music is how "written" it is. As in: every note counts, even in the accompaniment. It's not just vague harmonies and classic progressions, where the general feeling is more important than the detail.

This phase is very disturbing, story wise. We're facing Childe in his Foul Legacy form, with his twisted voice, unsure if he's still human or not. And the music just immerses us in a fully chaotic and nerve-wracking atmostphere, which I will attempt to analyze in this thread.

However, that's far from all there is to this music, and in this thread I'll try to show how rich and cleverly structured it is. It does a fantastic job at depicting both the fight itself AND the evolution of Childe's state of mind in parallel.

This motif is indeed deeply associated with Foul Legacy, since it's the one that ends Never-Ending Performance AND Wrath of Monoceros Caeli - and in the latter, with the fateful ticking of time symbolizing how Foul Legacy is consuming his own strength, and life.

Never-Ending Performance features numerous solo melodies, easily identifiable; Wrath of Monoceros Caeli is a boiling magma from which melodies try to arise but almost always fail to develop (with the exception of the harbinger theme, and of the ending)

Each instrument plays a specific role: the flute represents Childe and his playful side, while the bandoneon represents his darker, the harbinger Tartaglia. And the whole piece is built around the dialog between these two instruments. Let's have a closer look.

@privediIuc The French version is "Grobaiebaie" which is a pun on "gros bébé" (big baby) because the pronounciation is very close, and "baie" mean berry

The exact same melody is played in a more straightforward way, with a lot of quick notes that act as ornament to show how Childe is perfectly in control. He is taunting you, even letting you attack.

Suddenly, in a brutal transition and striking contrast with the flute, the bandoneon appears... to play nothing less than the harbinger leitmotif. The fight is suddenly getting darker. Is it when Childe switches to his Delusion form?
