Now that he's gone, I guess I can reveal one of Monte Hellman's secrets of the universe, something he told me decades ago: "You make a movie for money and it loses money, you have nothing. You make a movie for art and it loses money, you have art."

Hollywood filmmakers of 60s-70s spoke openly of aspirations to achieve freedom and creativity of international filmmakers.
Today they speak openly of aspirations to achieve stock options in Nike, Mattel, etc.

On a similar note, when I was young and naïve, I thought it was totally bonkers how Pat Kingsley kept Tom Cruise so completely blocked from ever talking about anything.
Then she was replaced and he started talking.
It took him 15 years to dig himself out.

Would be a better world if media reported importance of Steele's UK testimony and this week's grand jury indictment of Michael Sussman, but since most of them were active participants in his politically motivated fraud and libel, I guess that's a bit much to ask.
"Kilimnik’s peace plan to the Trump campaign in Aug '16 was flagged by Mueller as potentially nefarious, but its earlier delivery to the Obama administration wasn’t mentioned. Many in the intelligence world might call this “deception by omission.”

On behalf of everyone asking themselves, "How could Danny Masterson get away with such abhorrent behavior and who on earth might be enabling and protecting him from the consequences of his vile, evil actions?"
Thank you for this.
Rod Lurie's new pic "The Outpost," based upon the Jake Tapper book, just screened at Thessaloniki Film Fest. Don't know what's up vis a vis embargo or whatever but I can tell you it's a powerful, masterful war film that is aces in every aspect from screenplay to perfs +. Aces!

Ronald Reagan was for the assault weapon ban. Pass it on. Being a conservative doesn't mean supporting proliferation of weapons creating this kind of daily carnage.
I have a message for Daily Mail online. Actually, two messages.
1) Leave Jack Nicholson the eff alone.
2) Get an effing dictionary. Jack doesn't live in an "Infamous compound." He lives in an effing house. "Infamous" doesn't mean "famous" or "infinitely famous." Dopes.
Cheers.

Danny Masterson now has 30 years to read all those letters.
Question: Doesn't anyone have a publicist advising them on such matters?
Second Question: Doesn't anyone listen when their publicist says "Are you effing kidding me???"

My uncle was a coke dealer in Evansville Indiana in the 50s. I will happily write that screenplay for anyone who wants to make the greatest film noir of all time.
Globes, SAG, BAFTA: I can see clearly now and I am so happy for many pictures, perhaps most of all for CODA, the little picture that can. Glad to see to see it punching above its weight, perhaps love the fact that it all started with a French film we never heard of!

You + John, Terry, Michael, Graham, Terry were a great band. I still listen to your records. I still laugh + marvel at the inventiveness, wit, creativity, daring, joy. The band broke up. Life goes on. The End (of that adventure). You don't owe anyone anything. We owe u THANKS!

Pretty much love everything about Licorice Pizza but maybe top of my list of things to love is the way Harriet Sansom Harris just walks off with the movie in her one scene as the youth talent manager. Most alive movie of 2021 by a mile.

My John Cazale story:
1975, Francis Coppola's SF home, giant feast with 20 guests underway.
Cooking, presided over by Francis, goes on forever. Finally, pasta arrives, everyone begins.
Cazale takes a bite, stops, laughs, says loudly,
"Admit it, Francis, you blew it!"
Darren Criss = unbelievable talent + incredible positive energy. Will be fun to see him move beyond the great acclaim/awards for Versace to scale even greater heights. He helped make this year's Filming Italy Fest in Sardinia a total blast with moments like this .

I've got new respect for the Academy today. Will Smith's attack on Chris Rock deserved a very serious reprimand for a very serious breach of rules, decorum, civility. This works for me. What do u think? Can we now move on? Btw, the day after Oscars I suggested 5 year suspension.
Jimmy Kimmel quipped "only 12 people saw 'Power of the Dog.'" For several months, detractors scoffed it was too grim, arty, obtuse, *too something.*
Yet "Dog” was the most-watched English-language film on Netflix in mid-December. 27.2 million hrs, 1st four days it was available.

Question: Do you think there was a way to do this kind of piece on Taylor Swift that didn’t feel so invasive and icky? (Not to mention rather silly?)
And: Doesn’t it feel like she’s being punished here for being LGBTQ supportive?

True story: I met Karl Malden in ‘98. I told him my pal, Monte Hellman, considered “Baby Doll” the greatest film acting ensemble ever. He thanked me and said, “I’m going to tell you something but if you tell anyone it will probably kill it. I’m getting Kazan an honorary Oscar.”
Wow. If you read one recent piece on Monte Hellman, this it. Beautiful, essential, informed, honest, passionate. After that find Brad Stevens' book and Kent Jones' monograph.

Me: ( to Terry Jones, speaking as director of “Personal Services”) “We’ve seen films that celebrate French, Swedish, Italian, Spanish sensuality. Can you define British sensuality?”
