The French didn’t have enough influence over enough chiefs to have succeeded. The relationships had not developed, and there weren’t as many dedicated relationships as we had with the British. The French wouldn’t have succeeded under any circumstances or else they would’ve pushed harder. At the time it was too profitable on both Māori and British sides to ally together.
