Over 200 hours later, “The Chrysalis” is finally finished! Oil on panel, 60”x40”, private collection.
This is one of my favourite paintings I have completed in the last couple of years. ♥️ The making of art cannot be rushed :-)
I love that charge in the air right before a thunderstorm.
The air itself feels more viscous, heavier, and there’s almost a hushed quiet all around. Flora and fauna seem to hold their breaths for a moment.
And usually that means wonderful clouds to paint, like on this day in
As the decade draws to a close here’s a look back at a childhood drawing done at 12 yrs old & a repainting of the same subject 25 years later.

Every artist comes to their easel differently. I sit, many stand. Some paint frenetically. I am slow and deliberate. There is no right or wrong, there is only what works.
I find with painting comes quietude.

This was a true challenge. I had to stop seeing the way I normally see & deconstruct each tone down to its simplest and most basic elements. I had to let go of predicted outcomes. It was an epiphany.

Painting feels like you’re walking through a quagmire when you first embark on your quest. But eventually, with time, much time and many trials, it becomes muscle memory. 🩵

Painting allows me to embrace my humanness, process grief and become, hopefully, a better daughter, wife, painter, person.
As Carrie Fisher once said:
“Take your broken heart and turn it into art.” ♥️
“After visiting Mum 1”, oil on panel, 6”x6”, available.
Over time I have come to realise that it’s the painting that decides when it’s complete, not the artist. 💜

3 paintings of my beloved cat Sasha passed away last week. He was a dear friend whom I will never forget. I’m so thankful for the wonderful memories & many adventures we went on together. I miss him terribly. Thank-you for so much My Little Prince. Rest In Peace.
Painting is about trusting in the process. I find such a calm joy in the act of painting, of being in the muscle of the moment. It is meditation.
“Laura, through”, oil on panel, 24”x18”, private collection.
It took over 150 hours to complete this painting, which I painted while living in The Yukon Territory. The warmth of the sun on the canvas kept me warm on those frigid days.

I came across this painting from the deep past the other day. I’d forgotten entirely about it! It was great to see “Laura, sheet” again. It’s fun to see what’s changed & what’s remained the same in after 18 years of painting.

Sometimes I look at a painting and wonder ‘how the heck did I do that?’
I’m then filled with a momentary fear that I’ll never be able to paint well again. And then you pick up a brush and start.
“Where you lay waiting”,oil, 24”x36”, private coll.
This is a portrait of love. I’ve never done anything like it. I’ve painted so many self portraits dealing with change & tumult over the years, that it’s a delight to paint peace & joy, finally. Thank-you my dear
@joss
, for everything. 🌹
Happy Valentines Day to you all! 💘
A diptych from my days of struggling with anorexia. Painted when in the grip of depression and my eating disorder, my mother recovering slowly from a stroke and navigating the perennially complicated relationship I had with my father, I was a the lowest point of my life.

All the paintings you DON’T paint are as important as the ones you DO paint.
There’s a reason you didn’t paint those ideas, and that decision makes your work stronger.

In a time full of rage, fear, sadness, vague dread and crystalline self-doubt, I feel more gratitude than I know how to express. For one reason.

14 years after painting “February 2005”, oil, 48”x36”, it has found its way back to me. It was created the same month my mother had a massive stroke & symbolizes that uncertain time.
When this painting became available again recently my dear

got it back for me.

In 2003 I was in a 9-5 job that I disliked. I painted in the evenings because I knew that I wanted to be a full time painter & could be, if I worked hard.
I am thankful for that job bc it propelled me on to embrace my avocation as vocation.
“Margaret”, oil, 18”x18”, priv coll.
The first water painting I ever did. I painted it, like the shower curtain paintings, to see if I could pull it off...create the illusion, love it enough to put it on a wall. I’m so glad I did took the leap.. 💜

This 16”x16” is very much in progress. I’m really enjoying the buoyancy of it…it’s untitled so far:) Oil on panel.

This painting changed my life. It combines three things I love: water, fabric and the figure. Motion...forever wending. And it is now in the collection of the person who became my person. ♥️

Certain paintings remind me of specific animals, mythological creatures, psychological concepts or archetypes (& occasionally DnD classes:-))
They often have an aquatic connection, which informs their titling.
E.g.“The Undine”, “The Lotus Eater” & “From Pangea”, all oil on panel.
One day I’ll be able to do the former but until then I’m doing the latter: resting post spinal surgery to fix worsening spondylolisthesis and severe lumbar stenosis likely exacerbated by years of ballet/dance in my past. 🦴🦾🪡🩻🩰
Few colour juxtapositions thrill me as much as red and blue. They are old and new blood; they are wood, water and rock all touched and shifting with their changing moods.

Painting is not about speed. It isn’t about the dramatic arcs of paint. It’s about conviction. It’s about belief. It’s about the why-you’re-doing-it-in-the-first-place. The how comes after. The how is the fun part. The how will follow your heart. “Rebecca”,oil, priv coll.
Painting, like everything, is as much as about having control as letting go of it. Finding the balance of controlling the direction of the eye via compositional choices, while still maintaining the élan of the moment.

When you paint yourself, there’s nowhere to hide. When my mom had a stroke I painted this self portrait to show the cocooning in the wake of the terror at my her condition. It’s one of my favourite paintings ever. We are the sum of what we’ve conquered.

A painting from darker days...we are the sum of what we’ve conquered. This was painted while I struggled with anorexia & depression. The body is very forgiving...I’m thankful to be much healthier now. 🙏🏻❤️😊 “Self-Portrait”, oil, priv coll.
I’m so excited that two of my paintings will be aboard this mission! The Peregrine Lunar Lander will set down on the moon and serve as a time capsule of sorts, including thousands of works of art which will be on board via nano technology :-)
When is a painting complete? In my experience, putting down the brush & no longer being compelled to pick it up immediately is a good test...I also work two more hours on a painting after I think it’s done. Then all doubt is removed. “Woman in Shower”, oil, 48”x36”, priv coll.
My mum’s dementia has, thankfully, progressed quite slowly over the years.
I cherish each time she says “I love you.” Full sentences are more infrequent these days, but the love for her grows evermore.
Yesterday was my fella’s birthday...I gave him a “Lover’s Eye”. Popular in the late 1700’s the eye of the subject would be painted on a piece of jewellery & given to their beloved. I painted my eye on the back of my grandfather’s pocket watch :) Happy bday my love, my
