This past week the rescue has been viciously attacked on Twitter by a local "rescue", as have many others. I have been accused of animal abuse and killing hedgehogs by using plastic tags to their spines. Here is a statement from the RSPCA

FOAMING HOG-Sometimes we get calls about poisoned hogs foaming at the mouth, the hogs are fine & just self anointing. This hog is experiencing a new taste and it takes saliva & covers itself. Lots of theories why hogs do this but we don't really know. Fascinating to watch.

It's really hot here all week & our wildlife will be desperate for water & food as the ground is so hard. Please put out bowls of water for birds in the day & our hedgehogs at night. Hedgehog biscuits or cat biscuits are a great supplementary & easy food for hedgehogs. Thank you

Late last night we helped a couple who were roadside with a probable RTA badger. We attended as other rescues & RSPCA were unable to help. The poor badger perked up overnight & is now in the safe hands of a licensed rescue. We only help other species to support our local

Steve, our postie was busy delivering his mail when he spotted this hedgehog. He knew that hogs shouldn't be out in the day & this one was wobbly too. He rushed to the rescue for a pair of gloves & a pet carrier & dashed off to get the hog.

They look alot worse now the tree is leafless. At my old house my young neighbour used to glue upside down drawing pins on my fence to stop cats. I would go out every night and remove them whilst I was hog watching and she was in bed. She eventually gave up.

I'm trying to share as much of my happiness as I can in these worrying times. I'm lucky as I live in a garage so self isolating is easy for me, there just aren't enough hours in the day, and I have my good friends for company.

Hoglets first venture out of the nest at around 135g & 3 1/2 - 4 weeks old with mum. Mum will teach them to forage & find food. This happens in the darkness of night when most folk are tucked up in bed. Aren't they precious!

The tagging system that we use that we have received so much abuse for was original sourced by Dr Nigel Reeve & is still used at the Royal Parks. I adapted and improved upon the tags for use at my rescue & others.

These tags are our preferred method of tagging for post release monitoring of rehabilitated hogs. They are invaluable for gathering all sorts of important data. They are safe to use and do NOT harm the hogs. We will not tolerate any forms of abuse and are/will take action.
