On 28.09.2017, I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for the first time, hopeless and afraid of living. Fast forward 7 years, I spent the day bird watching with my dad on my childhood nature reserve, drinking hot chocolate and feeling so content. Recovery is always possible.

I have a question, particularly for younger birders/nature lovers: How do you feel about having hope for nature? Sometimes I feel guilty for celebrating conservation wins, when we’ve lost so much. Other times, I am determined not to let the bad news dampen my hope for change.
