Kyle Alexander is the best Canadian big Outside of the NBA. Should be an important pillar for future Canadian teams even if our NBA bigs are available.
Putting up 14.5 PPG, 6 RPG, and 2 BPG in his last 11 in the strong ACB (71% shooting). More below:
Nembhard has always been a coaches' favorite. In Gonzaga he'd often play all 40 minutes. Now in the NBA playoffs, he didn't sit the entire second half till the game was decided. Efficient, defends, makes the right calls. A winner.
15ppg and 5apg, on 72% TS in 4 playoff games.
Nate Darling helped the Ontario Clippers win the G-League Showcase Cup. Coming off the bench, in 3 tournament games, he scored 22ppg (4 rebounds, 3 assists), shooting 16 of 26 from 3 and 86% TS (!).
He's been lights out this season and should get another shot at the NBA.
As awsome as Brooks has been on D (and he has been), his offensive discipline and execution have been the story for me. A mind boggling 75% true shooting from a player who's never had an NBA season better than 53% TS! Small sample size and all, but he just plays within himself.
Maybe not a bad idea to play for 🇨🇦 in the summer?
Brooks and Dort are great defenders but were two of the least efficient players in the leage over the last few years, with a TS of around 50%.
This year? Both are shooting better than 70% TS so far (top-20 in the league).
The big dance begins tomorrow. A good time to summarize the regular season.
A thread on the Canadians in the NCAA: First Team, Second Team, and a few honorable mentions
A great start for many Canadians in the Las Vegas Summer League. Notable performances:
Lawson: 28 points, 6-11 from 3
Mathurin: 23 points, 3-6 from 3
Banton: 21 points, 2-3 from 3, 7 rebounds, 5 assists
Primo: 20 points, 5-7 from 3, 5 assists
Houstan: 20 points, 5-9 from 3
The game against France tomorrow can set up the tone for the entire tournament. Canada hasn’t finished in the top 20 in a big tournament in 20 years. Changing that starts tomorrow and Canada should treat this like an elimination game. 1/10
Through 12 games against D1 rivals this year, Xaivian Lee is scoring an efficient 20.5ppg (61% TS).
There are currently 14 D1 players who score 20.5 points or more per game. None of them is an underclassman. Only 2 are juniors. Lee is a true sophomore (hasn't turned 20 yet).
After the stink against Miami, Banton with another big game in a tight loss to Orlando. 26 points (4 of 8 from 3), 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 2 big blocks in the final minutes of the 4th to keep the Blazers in the game. Nice multidimensional game.
@BobbySm01916351
@sahalabdi_
Well, actually 4 All-Stars (Edwards, JJJ, Ingram and Haliburton) and 2 that deserved a spot based on how well they played last season (Brunson and Bridges).
Also, this "glorified college team" with 7 players 25yo+, at the height of their career.
Reality check anyone?
A few random thoughts after the first 3 Canada scrimmages:
1. I love the level of competition this time around. Finally some top world teams that challenge us before the real thing. Wasn't the case before the 2019 WC and certainly not before the 2021 Olympic qualifiers.
1/7
Dillon Brooks in Canada's 4 elimination games (vs. Spain, Slovenia, Serbia, and the US):
* 23ppg, 4rpg, 3apg, 1spg, 1bpg
* 80% true shooting and 67% from 3
* Tremendous defense when the refs let him play
Anyone still wanna send him to China?
Dillon Brooks' stats over the last 10 games:
19.2ppg, 3.8rpg, 3.6apg, 55 TS%
The Grizzlies, despite missing Desmond Bane, won 9 of these 10, largely thanks to Dillon's uncompromising defense against SGA, Ant, Hero, Ingram, Middleton, and others.
My 7th power ranking edition ahead of a new basketball season. Ranking the top 50 Canadians in the world.
Starting today with some honorable (and dishonorable) mentions.
Shai + Jamal anyone?
SGA tonight: 42 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks in only 3 quarters
Murray: 41 points (7 3-pointers), 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and a steal for the best team in the NBA.
The summer of team Canada looks exciting!
Two years ago, I wrote a lengthy series on the future of Canadian basketball in the paint. Time to check up on how some of our young bigs are doing.
A thread on 10 upperclassmen who are playing well one month into the college season.
Lack of size was one of the main reasons for Team Canada's failure to get to the Tokyo Olympics. Canada's NBA bigs are mostly over 30yo.
Who will take their place?
Part 1 of my
@onpointscouting
feature on the future of Canada in the paint.
Banton with career highs in points (31) and assists (9). Had a couple of impressive dunks and reads in the half court offense. Definitely the best game of his career, but he's been balling for some time now (28 in the previous game). Is he for real?
Leonard Miller with the best game of his G League career tonight: 33 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 assists. 13 of 17 from the field, 3 of 4 from 3, and 3 of 4 from the line. Trending up.
Despite the embarrassing gold-medal loss to the US, I came out somewhat encouraged by this Canadian U16 team, especially given my low initial expectations.
Here's my summary of the team's tournament and the long-term outlook of the Canadian players:
A new record?
5 Canadians with 27 points or more at the same night:
SGA: 30; 12/17 FG
Mathurin: 30 (season high); 10/17 FG, 8 assists
Murray: 29 (season high); 12/15 FG
Barrett: 27 (season high)
Sharpe: 27
Lyles (17), O-Max (11), and TT (10) also with season highs.
Best game I've seen Shaedon Sharpe play. Led Portland to a road win in Detroit with a second half of 26 points and domination in the stretch. Added 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks and a steal.
Shai and Shae will be a freak show in 4 years for Team Canada.
College season starts today! Most of the Canadians will be in action already on the first night, including Nembhard (both brothers), Carr, Mathurin, Edey, and many more.
My 12K words preview on some of the most interesting Canadians out there, by class:
Miles Sadler (30 points and 7 assists) saved the day for Team Canada today, leading them back from down 15 to a tight win over Egypt.
Have to wonder why he's coming off the bench and playing only 20 minutes a game so far, especially with Osaruyi still out.
Anthony Bennet in first game after the Jerusalem coaching change: 14 points, 4-5 from 3, 6 boards, and 2 assists in 19 minutes and an impressive win. Another plot twist?
Young new coach Yotam Halperin, ex-Maccabi and Israeli NT star, is the guy who brought AB to Jerusalem.
Canada U17 boys finish 9th after 3 easy wins in the 9-16 ranking games. Still, this tournament was a disappointment, especially given how badly we looked against better teams. I write about some of the reasons for this weak performance.
Strong performances by 🇨🇦 in the G and NCAA over the last 3 days:
Carr: 41p (10 of 15 from 3)
Banton: 37p, 9r
Telfort: 31p (5 of 7 from 3)
Kabengele: 30p (14 of 15 shooting!), 12r
Darling: 25p (5 of 8 from 3)
E. Miller: 20p, 10r
It’s hard to overstate the importance of Canada’s game tomorrow against Spain. Not only the QF is on the line but also an Olympic berth and, perhaps most importantly, an opportunity to turn a page on a decade of crashing defeats.
Some thouhts before the game: 1/10
My annual power ranking of the top-50 Canadian players out there.
Starting with a few honorable mentions, including potential future leaguers, current NBA players, and former ones who didn't make it into the top-50.
I'm not usually prone to vengeance. But can't help feeling a bit gleeful when Brooks is balling for the
@HoustonRockets
while the
@memgrizz
start the season 0-6 after dumping him this summer like a sac of potatoes in humiliating fashion.
Alexa: Define "poetic justice".
The college season starts in two weeks and in tradition, I’m putting together a Canadian watch list.
Starting today with the freshmen: Houstan, Nembhard, Boakye, Bediako, Butler, and a couple of others.
It seems like
@LeonardMi11er
will be a first-round draft pick this year.
But how about his brother,
@EmanMiller5
?
I'm predicting two Miller brothers in the NBA. Here's why:
The college season starts in less than a week. In tradition, I'm putting up my list of Canadians to follow this season.
Starting with the freshmen class, which includes highly touted Elijah Fisher (who's actually not the highest-ranked guy on my list).
Today was the best I've seen Shaedon Sharpe play. After 29 points in the early game, he had 34 in the afternoon (box score says 30 but they robbed him of 4). Had 8 3-pointers between the two games, on 50% shooting. Two tough losses for Uplay but Sharpe is really on another level.
The college season starts next Monday, November 6. In tradition, I'm putting up a list of Canadians to follow this season.
Starting today with the rookies.
Two weeks into the college season, I write about 5 Canadian players who started well. Edey, Prosper, Telfort, Tyne, and Krikke are coming from 4 different Canadian provinces.
Ranking the top-50 Canadians: The Top-10
Who made a significant jump?
Where are NAW, Boucher, Dort, and Brooks?
And who captured the
#1
spot this year?
Jamal Murray is quietly playing his best regular season basketball. Career highs in per 36 points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and TS%. Career low in TOs. And he's only getting better.
Today he's facing SGA (also career highs in most categories) for the big Canadian matchup.
Great win! A confidence builder for our boys.
My main takeaway from this game is the huge difference between the quality of the starting 5 (+16 on average) and the bench (-11). One of Shai or Olynyk has to be on the court at all times against top rivals. Ideally also with RJ.
This week's edition of Canadians in the NCAA looks at 5 "hidden gems" -- guys who are unlikely NBA prospects but might still be of interest to Team Canada in the future.
@KellenTynes
,
@mmaletic_
,
@nolimitwhez
,
@AdongMakuoi
, and Ben Krikke.
On Staurday, the Canadian National Team competes for another U17 World Cup.
In tradition, I've prepared a preview reviewing the team and the championship . In Part 1 today: The competition, history, rivals, and a general look at the Canadian team:
Canada's U18 team finish with the Bronze, with an easy win vs. the DR. Not a great tournament, but they secured the spot at next year's U19 WC.
Some final thoughts on the team, a few words on each of the players, and possible adjustments for next year:
On Monday, the U18 Team Canada will be launching its campaign at the FIBA Americas. Quite a few exciting prospects, led by
@iamelijahfisher
But also some question marks about balance and shooting.
Here's the first part of my preview for the tournament
In Part 2 of my Canada U17 preview, I'm starting to dive into the roster.
First the guards: Tyne, Okojie, Theodosiou, Sharma, and Kossaras. Shooting should be a strength.
O-Max continues his breakout season with the most impressive game of his college career.
24 points (9 of 12 from the field, 3 of 4 from 3) in Marquette's 26-point beatdown of
#6
Baylor!
A bit more consistency and he'll start getting into the draft conversation.
Ben Mathurin struggled to start the season. But today he had the best game of his NBA career. He's scored 30 points before with good efficiency but his passing today (8 assists) was at another level and he was also on on D. Need to see continuity.
Canadians at the top of NCAA statistical categories:
* Zach Edey is 1st in rebounds (13.7), 8th in points (22.0), and 19th in blocks (2.3). Also 1st in PER.
* Kellen Tynes is 2nd in steals (3.4).
* Wheza Panzo is 1st in 3-point % (59.6%).
* Ryan Nembhard is 12th in assists (6.0)
🇨🇦 rookies trending up:
@BennMathurin
with 30 in 25 minutes (6 of 9 from 3).
@ShaedonSharpe
with a career-high 17 points (7 of 10 shooting). Portland +30 with him on the court.
@AndrewNembhard
started again; finished with 8, 4, and 4.
Caleb Houstan with a career-high 8 points.
One by one they're getting there. After Rivals and On3, now ESPN also has
@ShaedonSharpe
as the
#1
prospect in the class of 2022. Wrote about him a couple of weeks ago:
It's been a while since the last time I've done a top-25 ranking by class for high school Canadians.
Starting today with the class of 2023. Full ranking in the link. Top 10 in this thread.
A forgettable 83:75 win against Mexico last night. I thought none of our guys played particularly well and the questions about shooting and playmaking were certainly there.
Still managed to find a couple of bright spots.
Nait George is the biggest surprise among Canadian college freshmen. Recruited late by Georgia Tech, it didn't seem like he would play much. But he took over the starting PG and produces (10ppg and 5apg).
Scored the game winner in an upset against
#3
North Carolina today.
Summary of the U16 Team Canada tournament. Not a bad showing after that weak start against Argentina. I'll start with the playmakers -- Tyne, Oliogu, Okojie, and Au-Duke
Finishing up with the bigs, this U18 Team Canada has an impressive and deep frontcourt. Unlike the team from two years ago, it also has some versatility with a guy who can space the floor, a skilled PF with FIBA experience, and strong rim protection.
Another strong performance from
@ShaedonSharpe
in the last game of the Nike EYBL group stage. 29 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and a couple of blocks and steals, on efficient shooting (12/19 from the field; 4/8 from 3). Uplay with an easy win finished the group stage 4-3.
How good has 🇨🇦 Marcus Carr been this year? Should he start appearing on draft boards?
I dive into his shooting efficiency, decision-making, and comfort level next to
@hunter_tyrese
at
@TexasMBB
and argue that the answer to the question above is YES.
Banton has looked like a reborn player since moving to Portland. 19 points (30 and 25 in the last 2), 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in his last 6 games. Shooting efficiency still needs to improve, but the 3-ball has certainly looked smoother lately. A Team Canada late addition?
Nembhard with mutiple winning plays in Indi's comeback win against the Suns. didn't start the season well but since coming back from injury in late December, he's been very good. 12ppg and 5.5apg, shooting 54% from the field and 45% from 3. Improved penetration and mid-range game
Canada U16 bounces back with an easy 85-49 win against a very weak Mexico. Efeosa Oliogu with a dunk fest coming out party, Theodosiou finally getting some recognition from the coaches, and Tyne continues to play well.
Time to wrap things up with the top 10.
Who would you choose as the top Canadian at the beginning of the 2022-23 season? The recent NBA champion Wiggins? The ever-improving SGA? Or maybe the comeback kid, Jamal Murray?
My own selection is inside.
Part 1 of my preview for the U19 World Cup opening this Saturday in Latvia. A bit of Team Canada history, Ben Mathurin, Caleb Houstan, Elijah Fisher, and more.
7. Since we're reminiscent of a mediocre US team (talented but not very coordinated), we should try the playing style that works well for them - full court press and creating havoc. Lineups including 4 of SGA, NAW, Dort, Barrett, and Brooks can make things unpleasant for teams.
Best comp right now for 🇨🇦 SG
@WillRiley_7
is actually Emoni Bates. Very similar physical profile (6'9, light frame, short 6'7 wingspan, lack of high-end explosion), paired with elite shotmaking. Riley is a better passer and a smarter shot taker. But similar defensive challenges.
Gotta love how NAW has reinvented his game. Was an inefficient high-volume bench scorer with inconsistent defense on a weak Pelicans team. But over the last two years he's become a defensive specialist and lately also a true low-usage 3-and-D, in the mold of Danny Green and KCP.
Part two of the Team Canada U16 preview: A deeper dive into the roster. The leading guards Theodosiou and Tyne, intriguing young prospects in Oliogu and Yeiy, and of course the 7'5 Olivier Rioux.
The first Global Jam basketball tournament starts tomorrow in Toronto and Team Canada released its final roster for both the men's and the women's teams.
Should be a fun event featuring some of Canada's best college players. Here's a short preview:
Canada U18 team starts tomorrow the tournament in Argentina, seeking to secure another U19 WC berth next summer. There’s much to like about this team and I start by writing about the championship, schedule, competition, notable omissions, and the guards.
That's it for UPLAY and
@ShaedonSharpe
in the Peach Jam. Another loss, which leaves them out of the QFs. Sharpe (20 points) looked a bit gassed out at the end. But he had (yet another) breakout tournament and was really impressive. More on him (and others in the team) soon.
Another excellent win for Uplay in EYBL, 68-66 against a tough Team Melo. They're on a good trajectory to get to the Peach Jam QFs on Saturday (their two games tomorrow will decide).
@ShaedonSharpe
was excellent again: 26p (11/21; 3/7 from 3), 8r, and 4a.
Quite a night for the second-tier Canadians in the NBA. The 6 who played tonight all scored well above their season averages:
NAW: 27 (18 in the 4th)
Duarte: 17
Powell: 15
Co-Jo: 15
Brissett: 14
Lyles: 13
Together, they combined for 16 of 23 from behind the arc...
Great win facing adversity. SGA is him.
Gotta say though, Canada lacks a loyal basketball NT fanbase (appologies Witt). Latvia with its 1.8mil population and GDP PC less than half of Canada brought a small army of avid fans and so did Lebanon. Our games all feel like away ones.
Following the end of the regular NCAA season and conference championships, here are my all-Canadian college 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams, with an eye to the Big Dance:
With the departure of Benn Mathurin, the Canadian junior class is not officially the Zach Edey class. But there's an argument that he's not the most promising NBA potential in this class.
Third and final part of my preview for the U19 WC, which starts tomorrow.
The schedule, the Canadian Group A, the other contenders, and some predictions.
Ben Mathurin this season against teams with a positive win/loss ratio (8 games):
22.6 points
3 3-pointers per game on 41% shooting and 54% from the field
7 rebounds
2.5 assists
Only 10ppg in 4 games against lower-level opponents (in fewer minutes).
Steps-up when it matters.
Another great piece from Jonathan. Latvia is similar (though probably a bit less talented) to Germany and Spain who gave us a hard time in preparation. No real big man, a quick PG who can pass and play the P&R, and forwards who can really shoot the lights out. Dangerous team.
Canada faces off against Latvia tomorrow in the final game of the 1st round (or as I write, the first game of the 2nd round)!
Did a little preview coverage, including which Latvians to watch out for and some tactical decisions for Jordi to make
Thoughts about the 30-point win against Senegal today. Nembhard (17 and 8 assists) and Edey (18 and 17 rebounds) were great. The second unit and shooting are causes for concern:
Given the thin Sophomore and Junior Canadian classes, I decided to do a special on players transfering from Junior College to the NCAA D1.
A few interesting prospects in my mind, including
@_malachidavis
,
@itselijahmahi
, and
@KyeDickson10
Also wrote a bit about Leonard Miller, younger brother of Emanuel, who's exploded this summer and to start the school season (52ppg so far in two OSBA games). 6'9 guard with length, speed, shotmaking, and vision. Special talent.
Canada somehow pulls up a comeback from -15 to win it vs. Colombia and secure their spot in the AmeriCup QF.
But this team really lacks depth:
Banton and TBH: 39 points, 7 from 13 from 3.
Rest of the team: 23 points, 1 of 20 from 3, and 0 of 6 from the line.
