Hi Im Heather, two years ago I decided to switch career paths to infosec so I went and got my masters in it and now Iโm a soc analyst. I went from waiting tables to a dream of a career. Thereโs a multitude of ways into this field, a degree was simply mine. Gratitude feels today.
Iโve been a security engineer for a whole ass year now. Here are a few Infosec training resources shared w/ me that have been helpful over the last year in my role:
๐งต1/10
Some positives in 2020. I went from waiting tables at the beginning of 2020 to leading and building out a soc. I finished my ms in infosec. Made tough life decisions and grew up. 2021 goals: take on OSCP prep. Become security engineer. Be a solid example and kick more ass โ๏ธ

I hope it inspires people knowing that you can restart your career at anytime in your life and still be successful. I was a waitress sweeping fries off a floor last year and today Im writing siem detection rules, learning how to configure ACLs, and training analysts. Life is wild
Been eyeballing this security engineer position that I 100% qualify for. You guys, security engineer is my dream career end goal. Should I pull the trigger?
ITS OFFICIAL!!! Thanks to some fellow, generous infosec friends, Iโm going to my first ever Black Hat and Def Con next month!!!!! Safe to say I am THRILLED๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Idc what anyone says, salary and merit increases are a reflection of how a company values their employees. You donโt retain talent by telling your hardest workers they are worth less than market value or by giving them a 2% raise
literally no one:
cybersecurity job listing: entry level analyst position, minimum 15+ yrs of experience, 10+ yrs system architecture experience, proficiency with java sql rust ruby python c++ and perl, deep knowledge of rest api and json batching, cissp/ceh/ccna, salary $66k
Security isnt for everyone but it CAN be for anyone. Case in point, I used to be a kindergarten teacher. I have a ma in education. I can speak 5 year old. Career changes yield transferable skills, like being able to make my point in simple terms. Sometimes this has its advantages
5 years ago I wouldโve never expected to be working in information security. A year ago when I was trying to get a job in security I wouldโve never expected to be sitting in security leadership meetings. You WILL exceed your own expectations in this field. Kinda insane.
rly happy knowing that i never used anyone or stepped over anyone to get where im at today. and I went all the way from hi im a server at cheesecake factory to hi im a security engineer
The biggest service you can do for someone especially in infosec is giving them the chance to learn. A concept,a skill. A lot of ppl are so quick to dismiss someone if theyre brand new at something but not a single person has not been there. Help someone by seeing their potential
Im sorry but the fact that anybody is acting like any tech/security/writing/social media position cannot be wfh after the last 2.5 years we all have collectively experienced is fucking laughable and insane
Seeing ppl with tons of accomplishments/lots of experience in infosec always makes me feel so inadequate. Like when does that time come when you feel like youโve actually made it in this field?
I dropped the ball and someoneโs account got compromised bc I missed a series of alerts for logins that were clearly anomalous. Itโs so much easier to see the issue after the fact. Its a shitty feeling to be responsible for something bad. Send encouragement ๐
a lot of things this year have gotten in the way of me studying for and taking my cissp exam but I did just pass my security+ exam 10 minutes ago and im feeling extremely proud ๐ฅฒ
I may not have oodles of years of experience in information security but one thing I know is that working on an incredibly hardworking, kind, and helpful team in this industry is hard to pass up. Iโd trade a hefty salary for a positive work culture any day.
Sometimes it sucks so bad starting over. It seems like everyone my age in their professions are making three times as much, working in management and director positions, and here I am. I try rly hard not to but sometimes itโs hard not to compare myself just being real
Gm. I failed a couple infosec masters degrees classes bc I was going thru a hard time and looking back today, im glad I failed them. You can trip up hard and still make it big and be something wonderful and it will be twice as rewarding bc you didnt give up when it mattered.
If I ever get to where I want to be skill and knowledge-wise in information security, I swear on it will write a how not to get discouraged book for people trying get into this field. Idc what anyone says itโs a tough journey and it beats the shit out of you.
I dont know what I would be doing or where I would be if someone didnโt say yes and give me the chance to crossover into cybersecurity. I hope I can give back and do the same for someone trying jumpstart their career one day. There are so many willing & able individuals out there
I get my first big paycheck tomorrow. Iโm elated, this will be the first time in my life I can save. Gonna go to the bank tonight and open a savings account and start this new chapter off right.
Is it a generational thing or am I the only one who has noticed zero degradation in work performance and ability to communicate with my team simply bc we have โgone remoteโ. In fact, I communicate better when I donโt have to find and face you and can hide behind my screen.Anyone?
