Lunchtime today - a Y6 girl walked across a game of cricket carrying her lunch bag - completely oblivious to what was going on. The ball got knocked up into the air and she caught it with one hand without even breaking stride. Coolest thing I’ve seen in ages.

. The practice of including ‘deepening’ or ‘greater depth’ questions in every lesson - it doesn’t make any sense - you need to learn stuff first before thinking about depth, and learning takes time. (Mastery scheme people take note.)

I love getting teaching tips from Gavin - proof that you don’t need years of experience when you can just make stuff up instead. I’d like to suggest that we could also force the kids to do that weird eye tracking thing - just to be sure they’re listening.

Unbelievable. Any improvement in the school system is in spite of the tests not because of them. Now go and speak to some actual teachers about it before you tweet any more nonsense.
Primary school tests are not public exams; the results don’t stick with you like GCSEs or A Lvls. But they have helped the school system improve. That’s why Labour and Conservative governments have both supported them. Mr Corbyn’s plan to junk them puts ideology before children.

It’s interesting that some people’s reaction to flexible classroom design is to dismiss it as a ‘fad’. It suggests that it is something done on a whim by people who don’t really understand teaching and learning. Surely it’s more productive to open up debate rather than dismiss?

Youngest is in Y2 - doing his SATs - he came home yesterday and told me he’d done a maths test. I asked him how it had gone and he said ‘Good - I got full marks’. When I asked how he knew, he looked at me as if I was an idiot and said ‘because I answered all the questions.’ 👍

One of the best things about having all of the children back in school has been hearing them around the building - with so few in during lockdown the silence was eerie. Children should make noise - they’re children. 😡

Options evening for our eldest last week - started with the head of year showing a word cloud of all the children’s names and speaking about them all being individuals and unique. Went on to say how proud they were of them - a school with their priorities absolutely right.

We want good schools to expand so more children have access to a high quality education. With 98% of selective schools either good or outstanding, we are making £50m of funding for them to expand, if they work to increase access for disadvantaged children
