An early camera & animation test of the first 3D character model we made -- Pearl! Despite using 3D models, it was important to us for the chars to still closely resemble the stylized 2D looks we were so used to over the years (though with some updates and polish in each game!)
Each character's 3D rig included controls to help manipulate various elements and maintain more 2D-esque silhouettes and poses. Pearl's lovely nose, for example, gets rotated on her face to ensure it never directly points at the camera.

Something fun: here's the first-ever piece of art created for

! This was a mockup made for our first pitch, before we had the final game design figured out, knew what playable chars we could include, or had updated the char designs to drop the stroked outline!
To those asking about other platforms: please know we hear you, but we’re limited in what we’re able to discuss. Steven Universe: Unleash the Light is currently exclusive to Apple Arcade, but we’re always working with CN on other options. And the future is bright!
Once we bring the char models into the game, we partially flatten and rotate them to always face the camera. Our goal with UTL was to 'fuse' the first two games together, and that required some trickery to get these stylized 3D models to work nicely with an ATL-like perspective.
REALLY excited about the secret thing we're working on... (and it's taking all my willpower to refrain from using emojis that hint about what it is...) Hoping to announce it in the near future!
Despite all the fun we had experimenting w/new pipeline approaches, our artists still enjoyed practicing their traditional skills during pre-pro👍❤️
Work began on the 1st game in 2013, & it's been a truly special privilege to grow & evolve our humble take on SU over the years!
Always fun to look back on! The SU Crew was so talented, hardworking, passionate, and gracious… and they also truly loved games! My wish is for every creative to experience a collaboration as fulfilling as these projects were.
By popular demand from our lovely Discord community: previously unshared Hessonite concepts! This was pretty close to the end of the design process on her. We had SO much fun every step of the way on the collab w/Crewnivese & bringing her to life. Forever love her!

boss concept! It would've featured similar mechanics to the Indigo Scorpion Boss from
#AttackTheLight
(the first boss character we ever designed for our SU RPG games) while also emphasizing UTL's new lane/position-switching features
We were quite fond of Peridot's builder moveset from STL, but still wanted to challenge ourselves to design a brand new moveset in UTL. Enter: ..Robonoids! At one point Peri could access 'noid upgrade trees mid-battle and transform them into different types (healer, SP gen, etc)
Here's an early pitch sheet featuring new mechanics we were experimenting with for the threequel (you might notice a surprise cameo in the top left... sadly that feature didn't make the cut!)
