Exactly 12 months ago today, almost to this minute, I was resuscitated by my “angels” who stepped up to save my life. The Chain of Survival was put into practice so effectively by this brave bunch of bystanders. Thanks to all those who played their part!

5 months ago today, I was saved because of a group of individuals who worked as a team to use the Chain of Survival to save my life. Crucial to my resuscitation was CPR and the use of an AED to shock my heart. Luckily my rhythm WAS shockable. AED's can save lives! So can CPR!

6 months ago today, I am so very fortunate to have survived a sudden cardiac arrest. Luckily for me, there were people around me who knew how to respond by performing CPR, and the venue we were performing at had an AED. We need more ppl who can do CPR, and more AED's out there!

Honestly, it was when we were doing a scene with a large python- and I’m afraid of snakes and Steve knew that- so he did everything he could to make me feel comfortable- keeping the snake’s head away from me, not forcing me to touch it to overcome my fear. That really touched me!

CPR may be traumatic - death is probably more traumatic! CPR and use of an AED is a vital intervention to avoid situations where people may witness a person die in front of them. Doing something gives the patient a chance to survive, as was done for me, 3 yrs ago. Grateful!

Yes, Heart of the Nation is getting involved in a program where we are lobbying government to do just that. Along other groups in this field, we believe that CPR and AED use is a skill for life- literally- and should be taught from a young age so it becomes muscle memory.

My favourite movie when I was a kid was Star Wars, which was later, retrospectively titled "A New Hope". What an incredible film this was for its time - the special FX and production techniques used were so realistic, and still stand the test of time in my opinion.

Unfortunately, a Heart check on the day I had my arrest would not have revealed anything according to my doctors. The plaque was not enough to have shown up under “standard” screening. It was the vigorous activity during the show that caused the plaque to break loose and clot.

CPR is an important skill - it’s a skill for life, but all the skills and no tools? Nah- an AED is what actually will resuscitate someone in cardiac arrest - CPR PLUS AN AED can save more lives than CPR alone! Our paramedics do an incredible job, but they need us to do ours!

I thought I was healthy because I felt fit- went to the gym (which had an AED), and exercised regularly- still, nearly died from SCA. Don’t confuse fit with heathy. Take all precautions - including knowing where your nearest AED is- check out
Wise words.
If your gym does not have an AED - you need a new gym. Fit and healthy doesn’t mean immune from SCA, and chances of survival in this setting are REALLY REALLY good IF there is an AED.
