Good on the older dude. I remember every single person from my childhood who treated me with any sense of dignity— not belittling children means a lot to them. Children with very specific interests like this want desperately for someone to take them seriously.
International Mathematical Olympiad upcoming in Japan in July.
This is the New Zealand squad.
I wonder what the US, Canadian, Australian, etc, teams look like.
Why is nobody white anymore. These people didn’t exist when I was a child. These are phenotypes that didn’t exist even a decade ago. I would remember faces like these, and I don’t. Something going on.
I’ll be real, I don’t get it. “Don’t you see how important it is for people to see themselves represented in media?” No, honestly. I know what my subjective world is like, I don’t need it dramatized for validation, and I don’t understand why you need to be “seen” at all.
Whites in America get asked questions about their ethnic background by other whites all the time, that this doesn’t happen in England is perhaps illustrative of something.
Buckingham Palace has been embroiled in another racism scandal.
Funnily enough, none of these white people have ever been asked "Where are you really from?"
Certain languages are “locked” behind others- you’ll have to learn another first. Eg: virtually all information on Itelmen is written in Russian, many Amerindian tongues behind Spanish and Portuguese, almost impossible to learn Sumerian without knowing Akkadian etc.
Any others?
The Arabic word for soap ultimately derives, as it does in many languages, from the Latin borrowing of the Frankish word “saipā.” Saturn was not a Norse god, so what did the Norse call Saturday? Laugardagr, literally “Bath Day.”
@iamyesyouareno
The Arabs were incorporating hygiene in their daily lives and creating algebra while the whites were dying of the plague during the dark Ages lmaoo. The whites built everything on top of what they stole and that’s facts. The white didn’t entirely help create a better standard of
I wrote my signature on a receipt once in China and the cashier asked me, eyes wide, if she could keep the copy— had never seen anyone write cursive English before. Everyone in the world is impressed by anything they can’t do.
All of these people are white, not a single one was raised as anything but Christian or Jewish, and acts of sodomy were illegal in New York for another 8 years after this photo was taken.

#AinuApril
, a thread about the provenance of the Ainu language. In keeping with the murky origins of its speakers, the Ainu tongue is a language isolate- it is not accepted to be related to any other. Yet, we may be honing in on why this is so...
They won’t teach you in school that Leopold of Belgium ruled Congo as his private property for 23 years. He cut off the limbs of Congolese who did not meet their daily quota on the plantation. At the end of his rule, he killed 15million Congolese people. He is seen as a Messiah

The real thing, of course, is only able to be made by those who have the correct Refried Genes as humanity lies in anguished wait for the invention of the recipe
My favorite type of American phenotype is “Dark-complexioned white guy who looks plausibly Hispanic but has a German/Scandinavian surname.”
What’s their deal
Have to remind people once again that Ching Chong (Qing Chong, rather) - 青虫 - is a real word in Mandarin. It’s this little guy, the blue-green (qing) worm (chong)
Languages that aren’t half as hard to pick up as they’re made out to be: Mandarin, Swedish, Latin
Languages that are about as difficult as you’d think they are: Japanese, Russian
Languages that are much harder to learn than you’d think: German, Celtoid Anything
Hoteps are silly, but I think the impetus to create a substantive identity for American blacks is a noble one. We used to have such a thing too, before American identity decayed and was replaced by “I’m half Italian, a quarter Swedish, 1/8th Polish and 1/8th German”.
Imagine one day being hoisted from your lightless, watery domain by aliens from a direction you can’t even look and being taken to a world with suffocatingly thin air and a searing light awakening a sense you didn’t know you had and then being given Doritos.

As a Yank, I’m just gonna anonymously post whatever any of my British friends want said online for them. Interesting cottage industry might spring up actually, for a nominal fee you could just speak through a foreign avatar unbeholden to British law.
Few things better demonstrate the total American capture of media in the West than the phenomenon of Black British Rappers going off about the struggle. What are you even talking about, Tottenham? Continentals even weirder. “The hood” nigga you live in Copenhagen.
Today’s weird etymology- tundra.
Borrowed from Russian ту́ндра (túndra), from Kildin Sami тӯннтрэ (tūnntre), the accusative/genitive form of тӯнтар (tūntar).
Not too many Sami words in English.

- Afroasiatic is not a valid linguistic clade
- Finnish “koira” was borrowed from PIE *kóryos
- Tocharian couldn’t have been Afanasievo to have Samoyedic influence
- Silla was a Japonic-speaking polity
- Venetic is just weird Italic
- Lemnian is dialectal Etruscan

He kidnapped a 22yo woman, forced her to take money out of the ATM, locked her in the trunk of her own car, drove her to the graveyard and then shot her point blank in the face. No, he was not a victim of circumstance or mental state, the average person is not capable of this.
Tomorrow, a man named Willie Smith who has an IQ between 64 and 72 and has documented intellectual disabilities is scheduled to be executed in the state of Alabama.

Never saw myself in a movie and I’m not waiting on it. Why do you have to *be* a character in a story for it to resonate with you? Can you only “click” with characters of the same race, culture, religion, and sex? Children will point at cartoon dogs and say “that one’s me!”
This is the entire appeal of fiction, it allows you to experience a life and a world *unlike* your own. I like reading stories from places I’ve never been, I like reading stories from the past- a place I’ll never go. I don’t want to read about me, I’ve already heard this one.
It’s just weird. Grown adults awestruck that there is finally- finally! an animated children’s movie about a Chinese-Canadian girl whose grandmother lives with them and who has a family culture that differs from that of her broader society.
“At long last, ME.”
Fun fact. Not a single European culture invented a musical instrument for thousands of years. Every other prehistoric culture figured out music, except Europeans. Every musical instrument in Europe originated someplace else.
The Heirloom Seal of the Realm of Imperial China- created for Qin Shi Huang and carved from an older Jade Disc called the Heshibi. This was the physical representation of the Mandate of Heaven- it’s mentioned by name in the text. Lost in the 10th century. Wonder where it is?
As to the need to be “seen”, what a strange concept. You exist independent of external confirmation, do you not? Is this something you need to be assured of? Do you view yourself from the perspective of an outside onlooker? Stop it, it’s bad for you. You know who you are.
Daily reminder that not all Black Africans are Bantu- they make up the largest portion, but the Bantu reside in the central and southern parts of the continent. Bantu languages are merely a portion of the larger Niger-Congo family. Bantu expansion evidenced linguistically.
My favorite book as a boy was The Three Musketeers. I am not a 17th century Frenchman. Beyond that, I didn’t “identify” with any character in the story- I don’t have ambitions to the priesthood, I’m not a nobleman with a shadowy past. I liked it because it was a good story.
There is no way to integrate these people into the modern world without completely destroying them. Frankly, it would be humiliating to show a scrapmetal-age tribesman a land of incomprehensible technology governed by gravelly women with a religion devoted to sexual absurdity.
Ok but when are we going to make contact with North Sentinel Island? Are we going to have Mars colonies and trans human cyborgs but just keep a bunch of people in a pre bronze age bubble until the end of time?
Good morning-
Daily reminder that the breakdown of people in the world who know who the Yamnaya were is like 3% academics and 97% online RW shitposters
The reason no English word rhymes with “orange” is because it’s a wanderwort- a wandering word- coming certainly from Sanskrit “naranga” and likely from an earlier Dravidian word- it’s “arancu” in Tamil. Arabic has “nāranj”, omit the N to get our word with its unique “nj” ending.
Out of all US Presidents, only one has had a mother tongue other than English. That would be 8th President Martin van Buren, who spoke Dutch as his first language and incidentally was also the first President born in the United States (instead of British America).
I step on bugs I find that are mortally wounded, missing most of their limbs, etc, to grant them the release of death and hopefully send them to a happier whirl of samsara but I got in trouble when I tried this on a maimed indochinese street hawker
I’m not just taking the piss here either, I have encountered people who said they couldn’t relate to Tom Sawyer since they weren’t white. I didn’t have any problem sympathizing with the experiences of Uncas or Mulan or the black Rugrat and I don’t know anyone who did.

I don't get it, history is just irl lore
Daily reminder that the Black Prince’s maternal line was Turkic. Tens of millions of Anglos living today are lineal descendants of a 13th century Cuman princess- a Turkic people who settled in the Carpathian Basin after being driven from the steppe by the Mongols.
Checkmarks be like “how DARE you call Haiti a shithole country so what if it has a GDP per capita of $17.42 per year how absolutely dare you-lmao retard rightoids want to make us more like brokeass low-GDP Hungary they don’t even have air fryers”
Strange how many Scandinavians ended up in this part of the country. You’d think they’d have opted for something warm and sunny or at least mountainous for the familiarity, but no- pic related ser bra ut.
Never understood this line of reasoning. Galaxies are big = nothing we do matters- just a total non sequitur. “Oh god the sombrero galaxy doesn’t care about my Mario Kart 64 speed run” ok neither do I. “I’m so smol” get back to your Stranger Things podcast and quit whining fuck
gm, if you didn't already have a reason to suspect your insignificance, thankfully the James Webb telescope just gave you one
Solipsists are having a blast I'd imagine 🥲
“Proto-Indo-European” is such an unbelievably clunky term lol. Close to 250 years of scholarship on the topic and this is what we’ve decided to call it? I’m aware we don’t know what the language was called by its speakers, but come on. Yamnaya or something.
Though beginning with the long-past Beaver and Anglo-Powhatan Wars, the American Indian Wars did not reach their ultimate conclusion until the final cessation of hostilities related to the Apache Wars- from 1609 to 1924. Only a single American General lost his life therein.
On the way to Destin for spring break in college my car broke down near Dothan Alabama and half a dozen pygmies appeared and fashioned a new alternator belt out of pilfered sackcloth before vanishing as quickly as they appeared. I owe them my life.
Were there ever Pygmies in the USA?
A scholarly 1896 article in "Popular Science" asserted that there were several communities largely of freed African Pygmy ex-slaves in the forests of the Southern US, supporting themselves by hunting & fishing.
There’s an excellent British word I’d like to introduce to my American friends- Twee- “Affectedly quaint”- builder’s tea, cobblestone, thatched roofs, flat caps, Bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover, etc. You see it in media all the time, but you see it in individuals too.
Tocharian is one of the only instances I’ve seen of a language with 4 grammatical numbers- here the singular, dual, plural, and “paral”, used for natural pairs of things like eyes, hands, and feet.
An unremarked American behavior is the not-uncommon appellation of ground beef as simply “hamburger.” A hundred years from now perhaps the name will have transferred from the finished dish to the raw product to the animal itself, and we’ll have ranchers with 200k head of burger.
Twitter is weird because you’ll know people’s deepest political and religious sentiments, their hopes and dreams, the results of their endeavors, their favorite songs and jokes, but not their first name. Endless Masquerade, but less a ball, more a bar. Anon Frog Cheers.

This is black preacher intonation, the same source from which MLK learned his diction. It’s broadly their sole exposure to articulate oration.
I think a large portion of 20th and 21st century historical work will be remembered for being vainglorious attempts to disprove what people in the 19th century already knew. This was referenced in multiple sources from different groups of people- they weren’t all just bigots.
"in the 20th century, people [said] … this was racist propaganda on the part of the Greeks & Romans … & that Carthage should be saved from this terrible slander. 'What we are saying now is that the … evidence for child sacrifice is overwhelming"
Much of our understanding of the Maya script is built on the work of a Soviet Linguist named Yuri Knorozov. Many of the details of his life are unclear, but his proposal that the script used both logograms and syllabograms was ultimately shown to be correct.
