I remember thinking how absurd it was when the budget for the video for Crystal Lake was approved. I believe it was 2x the budget for the recording of the album 🤪
For almost the first year of touring The Sophtware Slump, we didn't play this song. Jason wasn't sure we could do it. Elliott Smith would call us out from the stage, "Make them play The Pilot"

While the lyrics arrived early and remained mostly unchanged, I ended up recording two or three other versions of this song and just couldn't get it right. Luckily, I hung in there and settled on this rendition.
