This is Chris Smalls. He worked in an Amazon warehouse for over four years.
In 2020 he was fired for protesting unsafe conditions and quarantine violations.
In 2021 he started the Amazon Labor Union calling for higher pay, better benefits, and better anti-discrimination policy.
Man falsely imprisoned for 10 years, uses prison library to study law and have his conviction overturned. Becomes a lawyer and is now helping overturn other false convictions.
This is Volodymyr Zelensky. President of Ukraine. He is Jewish. His grandfather fought Nazis in WW2. Many of his relatives were killed in the Holocaust.
He is standing up to a dictator. Because he is brave. Because he knows what happens if you don’t.
Despite heavy lobbying by Amazon, workers in Staten Island (Chris' old warehouse) voted 55% in favor of joining ALU.
Now, for the first time in its history, Amazon must recognize a US trade union.
This is historic.
How fitting that votes from John Lewis’ county flip Georgia from red to blue.
“The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democracy."
— John Lewis
Dr. Giampiero Giron, ends retirement at age 85 to treat COVID-19 patients in Italy.
"They asked for my availability, and I said yes. When you decide to be a doctor in life, you get involved. I swore an oath. Afraid of getting sick? Then it is better not to be a doctor.”
Yung Gravy, rapper, has collected 678 bras from his U.S. concerts. He is donating them to women’s shelters & will match the value of the donated bras with a donation to a breast cancer charity.
Brazil’s President-elect Lula has announced that Marina Silva, a prominent Amazon anti-deforestation activist, will be Brazil’s next Minister of Environment.
A strong indication that his government will crack down on illegal deforestation.
Houston cut homelessness by 60% after moving 25,000 unhoused people directly into apartments and homes.
That’s the only *real* solution to the housing crisis: to house people.
The story of the 9-year-old child pepper sprayed by Rochester police is uniquely abusive.
When she begs for humanity, screaming “wipe my eyes please!” - they slam the door, leaving her handcuffed, in pain + trapped in the fumes.
Fire those officers.
We can + we must do better.
"Politics doesn't have to be a raging fire, destroying everything in its path. Every disagreement doesn't have to be a call for total war. We must reject the culture in which facts are rejected and even manipulated." - Joseph Biden, 46th President of the United States
We cannot keep looking at the ugly parts of America and say, "This isn't America." It is. Closing our eyes doesn't make it go away. We need to stare down our demons in order to overcome them.
Mark Cuban opened an online pharmacy yesterday that offers over a hundred generic-brand medications at affordable prices.
For example, Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs Company sells the leukemia drug imatinib for $47 a month while it retails for $9,657.
Sacramento police held a gun buyback event. Both legal and illegal guns were brought in - no questions asked - and exchanged for gas vouchers.
The event was so popular they ran out of vouchers in under an hour.
Every police department in the country should do this.
Congratulations
@ReverendWarnock
on being elected to the US Senate. Rev. Warnock is the first Black senator in Georgia history – and the 11th Black senator in US History. In his words, "That’s why I love America because you always have a path to make a great country even greater”
For a sitting Senator, Mike Braun clearly hasn't read up on US history... Like the passing of the 14th amendment, or of Loving v. Virginia...
In a normal country, in a normal world, a statement this ignorant and racist should be career ending.
A slim Biden win may be for the best. It removes the immediate authoritarian threat but still forces us to face our national/societal demons.
A landslide would feel good, but easily lead to “Trumpism was a fluke and the country’s really okay.” Clearly, it wasn't and we aren't.
@elonmusk
Maybe hire someone whose full time job is to meet people around the country, see who is really struggling and is a decent person that deserves to be helped. Then help them out anonymously. A car payment, a month of rent, enough money for groceries can make all the difference.
@HawleyMO
@simonschuster
Get real, they are a private business, not the government. They can pull that book deal for any reason they want, let alone your craven actions. Your a senator and you don't know this? "Election integrity"? Just stop lying already. Stop. Lying.
No matter what you think of Julian Assange, extraditing him to face Espionage charges is bad for whistleblowers and journalists everywhere.
Human rights violations MUST be exposed. We should be punishing the perpetrators, not the leakers.
Brazilian priest João Paulo Araujo Gomes takes abandoned dogs off the streets, feeds and bathes them, and then presents a dog to each mass to be adopted.
Dozens of stray dogs already have a home thanks to the priest.
MacKenzie Scott donates $133.5 million to help keep at-risk kids in school. In less than two years she's donated over $8.6b to 780+ organizations focusing on education, racial justice, gender equality & public health. Other billionaires, please take note – this is how it's done.
This really is a win for the entire planet. The US will re-enter the historic Paris climate accords on “day one” and an administration that understands and respects science will be in charge.
