3 years ago today, Jose Fernandez returned from Tommy John surgery, beat the Giants and hit a home run. Then he gave the flight staff a break and passed out dinners on the trip to Chicago. The fish was just OK. The service was great. A personal favorite Jose memory.

4 years ago today, Jose Fernandez beat the Nats 1-0 in his final ML game with 8 innings of 3-hit, no-walk 12-K ball. With the

days away from a possible return to the postseason, can’t help but think about how Jose would have dazzled on the October stage. 📷Rob Foldy
6 years ago tonight, Jose Fernandez beat the Nationals, 1-0, with 8 innings of 3-hit shutout ball with no walks and 12 strikeouts in what would be his final major league start.

FREE AGENCY UPDATE: I was informed today the Marlins will not be renewing my contract for the 2023 season. Through a lot of ups and downs, it has been an honor and a privilege to call games for my hometown team over the last 15 seasons.

A view I really miss. My favorite time of day at
@Marlins
Park. Roof and windows open. The setting sun reflecting off the downtown

skyline. This photo was taken one year ago tonight.

There was a time we wondered if we’d play ball at all in 2020. Well, what a season it turned out to be. And as much fun as we had, I guarantee this is just the beginning. Thanks for sharing the journey on
@MarlinsRadio
. We will talk to you in the spring!

#Postseason
Hey,
@Marlins
, it’s not hard. How about setting up a Zoom today for Bruce Sherman to take questions from season ticket holders? You love to promote the privileges of membership. Now’s your chance to prove it. And you can record it to share with anyone who’d like to watch after.
As our younger children return to school this week, my family is so grateful for the incredible teachers who have impacted their lives. How great is this?
As the
#Marlins
return to the postseason for the first time since 2003, I’m happiest for the core group of passionate and devoted fans who’ve been through a lot over the years. And you know what’s best about what this team has accomplished in 2020? This is just the beginning.
Thanks to all who came out to
#Marlins
Park today. You brought TREMENDOUS energy. It was in my opinion one of the liveliest atmospheres this ballpark has seen, and everyone in the clubhouse was talking about it postgame. Hats off to all who made it happen! Come see us again soon.
I absolutely LOVE the new look to the
#Marlins
Park outfield for 2019. The blue outfield fences, the Ivy-covered walls, the Palm trees and the new standing-room/party decks are SPECTACULAR.
Jose Fernandez made his major league debut 7 years ago today. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about the impact he made on and off the field in such a short time but also wonder “Why?” And “What if...”
#Marlins
Go back to the spring, long before the 60-game sprint. No one would’ve been surprised to see the Rays, Yankees, A’s, Astros, Dodgers and Braves among the final 8. Now the
#Marlins
are there too. You may be surprised, but don’t give me the 60-game fluke BS. They’ve earned it too.
You predicted this, right?
2019 NL EAST ROTATION ERA
Marlins 3.82
Nationals 3.85
Mets 4.20
Phillies 4.28
Braves 4.32
#Marlins
starters lead the NL East, rank 4th in the NL and 7th in
#MLB
in ERA while holding opponents to a .235 AVG, 4th-best in MLB behind only TB, HOU and LAD.
A
#Marlins
Member since day one, on the short list of the most passionate fans this franchise has, told me the atmosphere at Marlins Park today was the best since Opening Night in 2012. That’s so awesome to hear. Hope folks will come back and keep bringing the passion.
To all dealing with bad weather across the majors and minors: I took a girl to dinner on this date in 1996 when our game in Rochester was PPD due to frozen pipes in the ballpark. 22 years, 4 cities, 3 amazing kids and a Beagle later, a little bad weather turned out pretty well!
I didn’t have a horse in the Saints-Vikings race, but can we all agree that the NFL overtime rule is absolutely absurd. It’s like the visiting team scores a run in the top of the 10th and the home team doesn’t get an AB. How can this have never been addressed over decades.
For those wondering where the
#BottomFeeders
came from, it was born on the Phillies TV post-game show, following the
#Marlins
’ Opening Day win. Ironically, it began somewhat as a compliment to the Marlins and a knock on the Phillies. Now it’s taken on a life of its own.
No writer in my lifetime has covered Baseball with the depth and perspective of Tom Verducci. His piece in this week’s Sports Illustrated on Derek Jeter’s plan to build the
#Marlins
franchise is a MUST READ for all
@Marlins
fans (and the haters too).
A team wins a few games and some forget:
The
#Marlins
currently have 20 players on the IL, one opt out and one on bereavement.
They are without their top 3 starters, 8 of their original 12 relievers, their
#1
C, 2B, SS, RF, LF and DH. And they're tied for first in the NL East.
The
#Marlins
have called up 3 starting pitchers from Triple-A in the last 10 days. Elieser Hernandez, Jordan Yamamoto and Zac Gallen have combined for a 1.47 ERA in 5 starts. Into tonight,
#Marlins
starters have the best ERA in the NL East, rank 4th in the NL and 7th in
#MLB
.
What happens if the
#Marlins
actually hit on a couple of these prospects? Let’s say one wins a batting title and another goes to an All-Star Game and wins a Silver Slugger. Then they reach arbitration and get traded for the next group of lottery tickets? Does the cycle ever end?
There may have been a more fun night and a more exciting
#Marlins
win at some point over my 12 years here, but I sure as heck can’t think of what it would have been. Thanks to the amazing fans who brought incredible energy and helped make it happen tonight! There’s more to come.
You don’t have to be a
#Mets
fan to appreciate and respect the career of David Wright. He always handled himself with class. He always played the game hard and played the game right. It will be a privilege to be on hand when he takes the field one last time tonight.
Very excited to begin my newest endeavor today, teaching Sports Broadcasting at Florida Atlantic University. Had a great first day with a talented and eager group. Grateful to
@FauSCMS
for this opportunity. Can’t wait to see what we can build.
#SportsBroadcastingInParadise
The strides the
@Marlins
have made in 2+ years to acquire waves of young talent, to install innovative systems & personnel to develop it, & to create an organizational culture focused exclusively on building a team that will perennially compete at the highest level is remarkable.
Now it’s time for people to start showing up at Marlins Park to support this team. You think it’s a coincidence they play better in front of 40,000 fans in St. Louis and Philadelphia than they do in front of 9,000 at home? MORE
@Lin_Manuel
Dear Lin-Manuel:
My name is Nancy Kassak Diekmann, and I’m with the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation. We have never met, but I’m a huge admirer of your work. Any chance I can have 4 tickets to see Hamilton Friday night?

regular season baseball. Old

@IamCodyRoss
remains a favorite during my 13 seasons in Miami. Always played the game with a smile on his face. Brought contagious energy. Had some huge hits. And man could he play some center field.
So the Marlins aren’t even saving money on this trade? That makes it even harder to stomach the return. Why make this deal May 3 when they could have held out for more from the Padres or someone else closer to the deadline (and benefitted from Arraez’s bat in the meantime)?
Source: The Marlins are paying Luis Arraez’s contract down to the minimum in their deal with the Padres.
He’s making $10.6M this season, in his second-to-last year before free agency.
To those who came out to
#Marlins
Park today and throughout the season, THANK YOU. While we still need to grow the fan base dramatically--and we will--your passion and devotion is a great foundation upon which to build. And it will be rewarded one day soon.
Today’s Question of the Day:
In honor of today being the 7th anniversary of Jose Fernandez’s major league debut, what single game in which Jose played is your most lasting memory?
#Marlins
Isan Diaz is the 7th Marlin to homer in his
#MLB
debut. He joins Mitch Lyden, Charles Johnson, Mike Redmond, Alex Gonzalez, Miguel Cabrera and Jeremy Hermida.
#Marlins
As we turn out the lights on my 15th season in the
@MarlinsRadio
booth, thanks to all who joined us on the journey. It wasn’t the season we hoped for, but we hope you enjoyed the broadcast as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. We’ll talk to you from Jupiter in the spring!
There’ll never be another Tony Gwynn, but Luis Arraez is the closest you’ll see in today’s
#MLB
. Now he’s headed to the House that Tony built.

The record is what it is in year 2 of a build, but you cannot say enough about how hard this
#Marlins
team has played from the first pitch to the last pitch every single night. That's a tribute to the guys in the clubhouse and a tribute--above all--to Don Mattingly and his staff.
My view from the
@MarlinsRadio
booth during the final night game at the old football stadium 10 years ago tonight. Javier Vazquez fired a complete game, and Bryan Petersen hit a walk-off home run in a 3-2 win over the Nationals.
#Marlins
Everyone knows how much Baseball meant to Larry King. He’d occasionally visit our booth in LA to ask about the Marlins. On a 2016 visit to Miami, he said he had never called MLB play-by-play. So we gave him an inning. A historic night for a man who made so much broadcast history.
What’s cool about what the
#Marlins
have done so far this year, and especially the character the entire organization has shown in doing it, is that it seems so out-of-nowhere. But if you’ve truly been paying attention for the last 3 years, you could see it building.
For my San Diego friends and
#Padres
fans, the retirement of Oliver Perez leaves free agent Albert Pujols as the only potentially active Major League player to have played at old Jack Murphy/Qualcomm Stadium, which hosted its final game in 2003.
The
@FlaPanthers
and
@Marlins
have played on the same day 15 times since
#Marlins
Opening Day on March 28. The Panthers have scored as many or more goals as the Marlins have scored runs on 10 of those 15 days, with the
#NHL
club outscoring the
#MLB
team 7 times.
#CrookedNumbers
With my 27th season in Baseball, No. 11 with the

Alfredo Amezaga was a magician with the glove, a joy to watch wherever he played on the infield or in the outfield. As Fredi Gonzalez used to say, wherever you put him, he was the best defensive player on the field.
I’m tired of national voices saying
@J_ManPrime21
is “unsung” or “underrated.” That’s your fault for not paying attention.
#B1GCats
Nation has marveled at his excellence on and off the field for 4 years. What a remarkable career at
#Northwestern
.
After missing two games in 12 seasons here, taking some time off feels odd, but—for anyone looking for me—my family and I are taking our oldest to college this week. I’m grateful to the
#Marlins
for giving me a little time away. Will talk to you from Atlanta next Tuesday.
Moving moment hearing
@GlennGeffner
choke up discussing the
@Marlins
clinching on the anniversary of Jose Fernandez’s passing. Seems like such a fitting date...Jose meant so much to the organization and to this city as a whole.
It didn’t ultimately impact the game, but a reminder that this pitch was called a strike in the bottom of the 9th inning of a tie game today. And the video is even worse.
Excited to announce a new project: Glenn Geffner’s Play-by-Play Boot Camp. One-on-one coaching via Zoom for high school and college students who aspire to careers in play-by-play as well as young professionals just beginning their journeys. Learn more at .
Where to begin as the
#Marlins
complete a 3-game sweep of the
#Mets
?
Well, let's start with it being the first
@Marlins
series sweep in the last 70 series, since they won 3 straight from the Mets Sept. 18-20, 2017...
I didn’t sleep for long last night, but, man, I had the craziest dream about how the last 2 months played out. And then, the great
@richardjustice
wrote about it! The

For anyone who has never read "The Curious Case of Sidd Finch," or for anyone who hasn't read it in a while, this George Plimpton piece from Sports Illustrated may be 35-years-old, but it remains a classic.

@SInow
published George Plimpton's cover story "The Curious Case of Sidd Finch," about a

rookie (a

french-horn playing orphan) who threw a fastball 168 MPH.
It became an April Fool's Day classic.
