Strengthening Communities with Suhal Ahmed ✨🤝 At our Burns Supper & Mawlana Rumi Celebration 2025, we were honored to welcome Suhal Ahmed, Head of the #NationalCommunityEngagementTeam, who shared powerful insights on community engagement, immigration support, and tackling vulnerabilities such as modern slavery and domestic violence. He emphasized the importance of grassroots work and how engagement, like tending a garden, requires care, consistency, and commitment. We are also excited about the plans to refresh immigration surgeries, ensuring individuals get the guidance they need. A huge thank you to Suhal and his team for their dedication to building trust, fostering meaningful conversations, and supporting diverse communities across the UK. . . . . . . . #GAU #BurnsSupper2025 #Homeoffice #NationalCommunityEngagementTeam #CommunityEngagement #ImmigrationSupport #StrongerTogether #InclusiveScotland

Supporting Our Afghan New Scots – A Message from Steven Henderson ✨🏠 At our Burns Supper & Mawlana Rumi Celebration 2025, we had the privilege of hearing from Steven Henderson, Chief Executive of @WheatleyHousing, who spoke about the vital role of housing, community support, and partnership in helping Afghan families build their lives in Scotland. With over 100 Afghan families housed by Wheatley, he highlighted the importance of family, cultural adjustment, and social integration, emphasizing how housing is more than just providing a roof—it’s about support, engagement, and empowerment. From English lessons and translations to collaborations with GAU on initiatives like the Cycle Library and football tournaments, this partnership is changing lives. Steven also reminded us of the harsh realities faced by Afghan women under the Taliban and how we can amplify their voices, provide practical support, and advocate for their rights. He shared inspiring examples of Afghan women restarting their medical studies in Scotland and new talents like Maddy, an Afghan graduate now working on social housing developments at Wheatley. A heartfelt thank you to #StevenHenderson and @WheatleyHousing for their unwavering commitment to supporting Afghan communities and fostering a Scotland that truly welcomes and empowers all. 🌍🏡✨ . . . . . . #BurnsSupper2025 #GAU #NewScots #CommunitySupport #UnityInDiversity #AfghanWomen #WheatleyGroup #housing

‼️‼️ You may have seen reports in the news about the #UKGovernment's Border Security, #Asylum and #ImmigrationBill. This is the UK Government's new approach to asylum and immigration. It is made up of several parts and has not yet become law. We are looking into this to find out what it will mean for our members. In recent years we have been actively involved in campaigning for a fairer, more equitable and more compassionate asylum and immigration system in the UK with human rights at its core. We believe this is better not only for people who are escaping violence, persecution and fear, but also brings many benefits to society including the skills and talents of new people which can help to build a stronger society. We will continue this work and to raise concerns with the UK Government and MPs. We will continue to share information with our members as we work for equality, inclusion, peace and diversity.

Glasgow Afghan United School Children reciting Robert Burns Poem at the Burns & Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Mohammad Rumi Supper 2025 at Glasgow City Chambers. ✨ Is there for honest Poverty That hings his head, an’ a’ that; The coward-slave, we pass him by, We dare be poor for a’ that! For a’ that, an’ a’ that. Our toils obscure an’ a’ that, The rank is but the guinea’s stamp, The Man’s the gowd for a’ that. What though on hamely fare we dine, Wear hoddin grey, an’ a that; Gie fools their silks, and knaves their wine; A Man’s a Man for a’ that: For a’ that, and a’ that, Their tinsel show, an’ a’ that; The honest man, though’ e’er sae poor, Is king o’ men for a’ that. Ye see yon birkie ca’d a lord, Wha struts, an’ stares, an’ a’ that, Tho’ hundreds worship at his word, He’s but a coof for a’ that. For a’ that, an’ a’ that, His ribband, star, an’ a’ that, The man o’ independent mind, He looks an’ laughs at a’ that. A Prince can mak a belted knight, A marquis, duke, an’ a’ that! But an honest man’s aboon his might – Guid faith, he mauna fa’ that! For a’ that, an’ a’ that, Their dignities, an’ a’ that, The pith o’ Sense an’ pride o’ Worth Are higher rank than a’ that. Then let us pray that come it may, As come it will for a’ that, That Sense and Worth, o’er a’ the earth Shall bear the gree an’ a’ that. For a’ that, an’ a’ that, It’s comin yet for a’ that, That Man to Man the warld o’er Shall brithers be for a’ that. #BurnsNight #RobertBurns #RobertBurnsNight #Rumi #RumiPoetry

‼️WEATHER WARNING - DO NOT TRAVEL‼️ Severe winds are expected in Scotland tomorrow (Friday 24th) and Police Scotland has asked the public not to travel unless it is vital. Glasgow Afghan United has taken the decision to cancel in-person activities for the day to prioritise safety. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and will still be contactable through phone and messaging. The Met Office has said the red weather warning will run from 10am on Friday 24th until 5pm that evening, covering parts of Dumfries & Galloway and the Scottish Borders, all of Strathclyde (including Glasgow, Greenock, Paisley, etc) and the Lothians & Borders (including Edinburgh), as well as southern parts of Fife and the Forth Valley. A wider amber warning for high winds and yellow warning for snow are also in place. The conditions are expected to cause widespread disruption to transport, with the potential for inland gusts of up to 90mph, and winds of over 100mph on exposed coasts and hills, especially in the west. This will cause bridge closures, train and bus cancellations, etc, and could lead to fallen trees, flying debris, power cuts, etc. Stay at home if you can and make sure you have what you need for the day - prioritise your safety and check if schools, nurseries, colleges etc will be closed in your area.
