My mother, the rock and heartbeat of our family, passed away gently at 7.55 this morning. We are grief stricken but full of gratitude for her life and example, and that her suffering is no more. I know she will receive the reward of her long life of love.

I find it hard to believe that I am 60 years old today. I don’t know where the time has gone. I hope that, as I’ve aged, I have become kinder, wiser, and less dogmatic. My family organised a delightful party for me yesterday.

Devastating news today from the Philippines that the head of our Cebu Redemptorist province Fr Nico Perez, who spent 2013/14 in Dublin, has died from Covid. He was only 44.

My aunt Celia (Sr Margaret Mary) died last night in Cork. She packed so much into her 92 years. She taught for decades in the Philippines and Kenya. We have pics of her with notorious Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos (though she was no fan). A warm, kind, generous lady. RIP.

An irate man rang three times last night to complain about my homily. He was unhappy that I spoke about racist attitudes towards immigrants. I should have talked about our own unemployed and about abortion,he said, and not about those foreigners.

A little Ukrainian boy who arrived in Limerick last night after a difficult 6 day trip from the east of the country was heartbroken when his pet Guinea pig died after the long journey. We are trying to console him by giving the pet a decent burial in our back garden today.

Half the congregation at our weekend masses are people whose families arrived here from overseas, from India, the Philippines, Africa, Eastern Europe, South America. They are full of life, warmth and energy. They are building up our country and church. I’m thrilled they are here.

Suffered a blow out on a busy road near Tuam last night as I returned from Mayo. I was waiting for over an hour for AA to rescue me (being one-handed, I can’t change tires, etc myself) when a couple in a van pulled up and saved me. There are so many Good Samaritans around.

My table buddy for the past 5 years died last night. Pat O’Connell was diagnosed with terminal cancer in November. The suddenness of his passing, though a blessing for him, is shocking. I thank God for his long life of service and love in Ireland and in the Philippines. RIP Pat.

Michael O’Connor, the oldest member of our community here in Limerick at almost 94, died this morning. A Kerry man, he edited Reality magazine in the 1960s and was sacked after drawing the ire of John Charles McQuaid, which of course was to his credit. RIP.

At our four weekend masses we took in approx 20,000 euros for Ukraine, an extraordinary figure. Our total fundraising will approach 250,000 euros. Every cent is going to the Redemptorists in Ukraine. No overheads. People are so generous. #Ukraine

My wonderful mother has entered the last phase of her long life of love. We have spent the night holding vigil by her bedside. Just a matter of hours, unless she confounds us, as she is capable of doing. Tears, prayers, hand-holding, gentle words of comfort and love.

Another birthday today, and I remember especially my mother who was in labour with me, her first born, for four days in one of those “nursing homes” mothers went to back then, and how she suffered terribly. I was left with a disability and she was left physically damaged also.

Today the Irish Redemptorists are mourning the loss of Fr Peter Flannery, who was a member of our community in Limerick. Peter was a fine preacher and parish missioner who did great work over many years. He was also a wonderful friend. I’m sure God’s given him a warm welcome.

Mourning the death of another of my Redemptorist brothers here in Limerick. Fr Joe McLoughlin went to his eternal reward unexpectedly last night. A vivacious, down-to-earth, sports-loving, scripture scholar, Joe ministered for many years in Brazil. We shall miss him hugely. RIP.

Sad to announce the death of my cousin John Kelly, Cappawhite, Co Tipperary. A retired school principal, John won an All-Ireland senior hurling medal with Tipperary in 1971. A wonderful, gentle man. RIP.

I was in our church when an older man I did not know came up to me and handed me an envelope. “A little contribution to the Hamper Appeal,” he said. Then he walked away. The envelope contained 3000 euros. Another example of people’s goodness this Christmas.

I have always felt that, except in the case of martyrdom, nobody, no matter how charismatic, should be canonised by the church until, say, 50 years after his or her death. A rush to canonise anyone, including recently deceased popes, is never wise.
