The Roche family tragedy. On 29 Aug 1944 a V1 Bomb dropped on Aldershot Road Kilburn killing 10 people incl Margaret Roche aged 35 from Waterford City🇮🇪 & her 2 daughters Christina (12) & Joan (11). A month earlier her husband John (44) was killed in an air raid on Park Royal Rd.

On 26/27th May 1940 W/O Samuel Yarnold 7th Worcestershire Regt🇬🇧, died aged 36 in the bitter fighting at Violaines🇫🇷 during the withdrawal to Dunkirk🇫🇷 & the dead were buried where they lay, in the surrounding fields. Samuel was born in Co Tipperary🇮🇪 & lived in Worcestershire🏴.

On 17 June 1940, Pvt William Edward Williams Pioneer Corps🇬🇧, died aged 38 after RMS Lancastria🇬🇧 was sunk with the loss of between 4000-7000 people off the coast of France🇫🇷. William was born in Rathmines Co Dublin🇮🇪 & lived in Birmingham🏴. He is buried in Les Moutiers-en-Retz.

On 28 July 1943 Pvt William Williams 1st Dorsetshire Regt🇬🇧 died aged 24 in the heavy fighting short of Catania🇮🇹 where he is buried, during the invasion of Sicily🇮🇹. William was born in Helvick Head Dungarvan Co Waterford🇮🇪 -The Gaeltacht, where his father was in the Coastguard.

On 17th July 1943, Pvt Thomas Watson 8th Durham Light Infantry🇬🇧 died aged 26 in the heavy fighting short of Catania🇮🇹 (where he is buried), during the invasion of Sicily🇮🇹. Thomas was born in Carrigeen Co Roscommon🇮🇪 & was living in Éire🇮🇪 when he volunteered & enlisted in 1941.

The tragic story of the Waterhouse brothers from Limerick🇮🇪, both in the Royal Corps of Signals🇬🇧. Cpl George died aged 23 on 1 Feb 1943 in an accident & was buried in Greenwich Cemetery🏴. L/Cpl William died on 22 Sept 1944 aged 32 during Op Market Garden & was buried in Mook🇳🇱.

Sgt John Walsh who was born in Éire🇮🇪 & lived in Liverpool🏴, enlisted in the RASC🇬🇧, volunteered for the Airborne & was posted to 250 (Airborne) RASC🇬🇧 that took part in Op Market Garden. He was sadly KIA aged 39 on 25 Sept 1944 & buried in Oosterbeek, near the railway bridge.

On 26 Oct 1944, WO John Walsh 2nd Bn Glasgow Highlanders🇬🇧 died aged 36 & was buried in Mook War Cemetery🇳🇱. John was born in Blarney Co Cork🇮🇪 & living in Glamorgan🏴. He could have returned to Éire🇮🇪 & avoided enlistment if he wished. Like 10's of 1000's of others🇮🇪, he didn't.

The tragic story of the Walsh brothers from Chicago🇺🇸. John (L) was KIA aged 26 over Freisack🇩🇪 in a Flying Fortress on 18th April 1944. William was KIA aged 21 on 13 March 1945 in Saarland🇩🇪. The surviving son Austin returned from New Guinea. All their grandparents were Irish🇮🇪.

On 20th May 1940, Pvt Cornelius Walsh 1st South Lancashire Regt🇬🇧 died sadly aged 31 at Dunkirk🇫🇷 & was buried in the Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension in Bailleul🇫🇷. Cornelius was born in Cork City🇮🇪 & living in Éire🇮🇪 when he volunteered in 1940.

On 22 Feb 1944, Capt Michael Wallace MM 139 Field Regt RA🇬🇧 died aged 48 in Burma & was buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery🇲🇲. Michael was born in Clonmel Co Tipperary🇮🇪 & living in Éire🇮🇪 when he volunteered in 1941. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field in WW1.

On 11 Sept 1944, Guardsman Michael Wallace 3rd Irish Guards🇬🇧 'of Limerick City Ireland🇮🇪', was KIA aged 22 defending 'Joe's Bridge' over the Meause-Escaut Canal in Belgium🇧🇪 & buried in Leopoldsburg War Cemetery. He was living in Thomondgate Limerick when he volunteered in 1941.

Signalman Lawrence Vahey Royal Signals🇬🇧, was captured in the Western Desert Campaign in 1942 & transported to Italy🇮🇹. He died sadly aged 37 at the Tuterano transit camp on 6 Dec 1942 & is buried in Bari War Cemetery🇮🇹. Lawrence was born in Bray Co Wicklow🇮🇪 & lived in Surrey🏴.
