Senior Wellington issues journo. Keen on local government, transport, three waters, and seismic resilience issues. I write the Capital Letter column.
Parking wardens in Wellington walk up to 20km a day in rain, hail, or shine, they are verbally abused, and sometimes physically assaulted. The Taxpayers' Union's attack on the city council for spending on new shoes for wardens was petty and mean.
Oh my god can people PLEASE just sign in with the Covid app! It's really not that hard. I was one of the only ones to do it going into the supermarket just now. It makes me furious!
Passenger: "Do you know where the bus to the airport is?"
Driver explains Number 2 route
Passenger: "I thought there would be a bus to the airport"
Everyone else on the bus laughs out loud
I can accept sitting in traffic when driving, but a bus load of people waiting between all the individual people in their cars? No! It just feels wrong. Public transport should be quicker than driving to make it attractive. Wellington needs more dedicated bus lanes.
Wellington City councillors have voted in favour of
@TamathaPaul
's amendment to the council's ten-year-budget to spend a massive $226m on the capital's cycle network.
While we wait for the Budget, some local government news! Wellington City councillor Tamatha Paul is seeking Green Party selection for Pukehīnau-Lambton ward. MP Chlöe Swarbrick backs the bid. It comes after the local party gave Iona Pannett the boot.
Really not sure that I can get on board with this... doubt people will understand the "Instagram" potential walking past. Just looks like a big sign with a spelling mistake?!
I genuinely love thess supplied photos with Greater Wellington Regional Council's press release about being gutted there is no money for their trains in the Budget.
Far out. Really feeling the half price fares ending in Wellington. By the end of this week I would have caught the bus every day into work at a cost of 40!!! My partner also catches the bus so, $80 between us. Makes driving look appealing (I won't because climate etc but 😳😳😳).
When students pay $480 a week to live at a hall of residence in Wellington, should they really have to pay an extra $2 every time they want to do a load of washing? It would be cheaper to rent than live in a hall and that's saying something.
@nzherald
I found this comment insulting & sexist. Thanks for the apology, Chris. But it's not a matter of "if" the comment was inappropriate, it WAS inappropriate. My reputation as a hard working journalist in Wellington isn't a joke to me. Let's all learn something from this and move on.
Let's Get Wellington Moving has been killed, Interislander's mega ferry project has been killed, the Shelly Bay housing development has been killed. WHAT EVEN IS MY LIFE NOW?!
I can't believe the Reading Cinema complex in central Wellington is still closed. I can't believe the demolished car park space has still not been developed.
You honestly couldn't make this up: "The $1.25 billion Transmission Gully motorway out of Wellington had to be hosed down to keep it cool before the weather changed and heavy rain then caused fourteen potholes." via
@nzherald
A Capital Letter column: If Wellingtonians don't snap out of their self-imposed mini lockdowns, there won't be much left of the city as we know it to come back to.
I have no words for this. The median house price in Porirua City rose by $273,000 between Jan and Feb and in Wellington City rose by $225,000. That's over ONE MONTH. Thanks
@Infauxllectual
for drawing my attention to this REINZ breakdown. Unbelievable.
I don't mind if people disagreed with my column. I did mind being called a drunk and a murderer. A lot of the comments in response to the column were not constructive criticism at all. This interview with Ashley Bloomfield shows my opinion was at least a valid one.
Finding second-hand ferries to replace KiwiRail’s ageing Interislander fleet won’t be easy. Shipbrokers estimate just 22 ships in the world would be suitable and none of them are for sale.
@nzherald
I am filled with rage that men think it's ok to yell at me from their cars as I'm running and just trying to enjoy the sun. When is this behaviour going to stop? I'm so freaking sick of it and have been since I was about 15.

I can't see Seatoun surviving climate change. No sea wall. The beach and the footpath are level with one another. This sand on the other side of the road is just from a windy day!
Some exciting news! As of today I have a fortnightly column printed in
@nzherald
and online. It's called A Capital Letter. It will take a closer look at Wellington issues and my thoughts on them. Please support this investment by subscribing 💃🏻
Councillors Fleur Fitzsimons, Rebecca Matthews, Jenny Condie, Laurie Foon, Teri O’Neill and Jill Day have issued a statement in support of Cr Tamatha Paul.
They support Paul’s public comments about Calvert’s behaviour, and say Paul has been "nothing but principled and positive".
Really not sure that I can get on board with this... doubt people will understand the "Instagram" potential walking past. Just looks like a big sign with a spelling mistake?!
While Simon Bridges was being rolled, Mittens the cat was being awarded the Key to the City. Did I not promise some major news stories from the capital today? You're welcome, via

OPINION: The thing about being the Mayor of Wellington is that you’re always the mayor, whether you’re chairing a council meeting, speaking at an event or getting tipsy at a restaurant and forgetting to pay the bill.
@nzh
I'd just like to make it clear that NZ Herald, RNZ and Dominion Post journalists take the time to watch Wellington City Council meetings via Zoom. I'd also like to note we are not the council's PR machine. It's our job to scrutinise and hold politicians to account.
Can you imagine surviving rapidly rising flood waters, then spending the days shovelling mud out of your home and stripping it to its bones so it can dry out, THEN having to do night shifts on a community checkpoint so gangs don't take what you have left?!
I feel really bloody sorry for The Ramen Shop in Wellington after the comments they've been receiving on social media. They were trying to do the right thing and be transparent with their customers. I'm glad this situation has finally been cleared up.
Transport Minister Simeon Brown has refused to commit to a walking and cycling connection in Wellington’s second Mt Victoria tunnel after promising there would be one when he was in Opposition.

Wellington's spatial plan debate:
@jilldaynz
says "this city is not a museum. We do not need to have a nostalgic city that holds us back in a period of time that doesn't serve us now."
Today I bought a little bag of salt and vinegar chips and after eating maybe three chips, the wind ripped the packet from my hand and scattered the chips across the footpath😩THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.

Wellington is planning to embark on a 'tactical urbanism' project of significant scale that will radically change the city's cycleway network as we know it. It's only as radical as it needs to be if the council wants to walk the talk on climate change.
Three prominent Wellingtonians are so worried about WCC's finances they’ve paid for independent experts to take a look. The analysis suggests WCC could be facing a $1 billion funding gap in unbudgeted costs and is on track to breach its debt covenants.

says “character homes do not mean the same thing for a generation that is locked out of housing. This is a human right and every time we make a change that makes it more difficult for housing to be built, we are denying the human rights of our citizens."
Wellington City councillors have just voted to reduce character area protections by 71 per cent instead of the final draft spatial plan's proposal of 58 per cent.
Scathing letter from Transport Minister Michael Wood to LGWM Partnership Board. Read more here "Let's Get Wellington Moving review: City's transport plan at risk of failing"
Grant Robertson says Wellington Water has a lot of explaining to do after it turned off fluoridation facilities in the region last year without telling residents. He says the situation is ridiculous and he can't fathom what has gone on.
@nzherald
Opinion: The end of the Shelly Bay saga is not cause for celebration but is instead emblematic of a wider problem Wellington is facing - an incredibly strong resistance to change.

Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau’s office is working on a security plan for her. Whanau is concerned future decisions on “trigger” topics like Three Waters reform, climate action, and rates increases could result in aggressive behaviour. via

This one's personal: Labour MPs who have made a song and dance about National keeping $5 prescription fees for contraception look out of touch with the real barriers women face. I say this after the experience of using contraception for more than a decade.
Almost 90% of land parcels in Wellington's inner residential zone are covered by character protection, the Herald can reveal. We've heard a lot about this protection only accounting for 7% of the city's overall housing, but context is everything!
More than 700 people watched the livestream of a Wellington City Council meeting held via Zoom this afternoon. I'm very happy that lockdown boredom is proving beneficial for engagement in local government politics.
My bus route is the best!!! News just in from GWRC: Noisy diesel buses are a thing of the past on the number two bus route, the first in Wellington to be fully decarbonised following the arrival of the capital’s 55th electric bus. Photo / GWRC
Wellington bus drivers have voted to strike indefinitely. Drivers will walk off the job on October 23, and stay on the picket line until the Tramways Union and bus operators can settle a collective agreement.
Column: I'm sick of people dragging up John Key’s comment from 2013 that Wellington is “dying” and using it to justify an onslaught of hot-takes about how the capital’s golden age is over. It’s a stale line that prompts a wave of pointless nostalgia.
Metlink says bus, train, and ferry services will continue to run a full timetable when the Wellington region moves to Covid-19 alert level 2 tonight. Lol is that the actual timetable or the one with 170 cancellations a day in it!?
Wellington has given up on waiting for a national integrated ticketing system, with the regional council considering a move to extend the use of Snapper cards to the train network.
Local Government Minister Simeon Brown called Wellington Water into his office before Christmas with concerns about the looming water shortage crisis. He met w Wellington Water committee chairman Campbell Barry & board chairman Nick Leggett on December 13.
An absolute pleasure to get a behind the scenes look at Wellington's St James Theatre before it opens tonight for its first performance in three years.
Tory Whanau has lived in a state house, won Lotto, negotiated with NZ First and now she's the first to confirm a bid for the city's top job. The former Green Party chief of staff is running for Wellington's mayoralty in next year's local body election.
We don't have enough bus drivers, the rail protesters are blocking key roads for motorists, and the trains are in disarray because KiwiRail only has one specialist track evaluation car which is broken. Good luck trying to get anywhere in Wellington!
I'm a young professional in Wellington and I would rather live here over Auckland or Christchurch. If you need tips on great day walks close to the city, please get in touch. The end.
Career update: I’m taking on a new role as Wellington issues reporter for the New Zealand Herald. I can’t wait to have more time to dive deep into the goings-on in our capital city. Shoutout to
@MurrayKirkness
and
@ShayneCurrieNZH
for making this happen.
BREAKING: The Interislander Kaitaki ferry has declared a mayday. Wellington regional harbourmaster Grant Nalder said the ferry was making its way towards Wellington when it lost all power. The anchor is down but the ferry is drifting. Tugs on the way.
Students win! Victoria University has agreed to get rid of $2 charges to use the washing machine or dryer on top of some pretty hefty halls of residence fees. Happy Friday ♥️
Wellington is stepping into the 21st century with commuters soon being able to use electronic payments via Snapper cards on all trains!!!! via

I wanted to write about my experience over the weekend to try and get people to think before they use their fists. I'm disgusted by this violence, how these men risked the lives of innocent members of the public, and how they have made me feel unsafe.
Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau has now deleted her Twitter account. Yesterday she told me: “It has just become a bit of a toxic fest and I’m finding very little value in that.”
Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau’s office is working on a security plan for her. Whanau is concerned future decisions on “trigger” topics like Three Waters reform, climate action, and rates increases could result in aggressive behaviour. via

I worry people can't appreciate opinions they don't agree with. Columns can be great for lots of reasons including because they're well written, they make an interesting argument, and they raise questions you might not have thought of before.
Wellingtonians- you can finally top up your Snapper cards using your iPhones with the launch of a new iOS app today. You can download it from 10am. I can't believe we've finally reached this technological point tbh. via

Wellington's spatial plan shrinks protected character areas by almost three quarters, allows at least six storey developments in suburban centres and along key transit routes, and expands walking catchment areas for railway station stops and central city.
Swimsuit Coffee owner Tait Burge is swimming against the tide of cafe closures and has expanded his business from Wellington's CBD to the suburbs. Covid has not stopped the 27-year-old from pursuing his goal of opening three sites by the time he's 30.
WCC is like a broken record with its code of conduct complaints, allegations of serial leaking, and claims of dysfunction. It’s disappointing to be in such familiar territory after $90,000 was recently spent on an independent review of such problems.
High profile Wellington café Prefab is ceasing operations immediately and staff have been given notice of redundancy. A sad day for the capital indeed. via
