โI got diagnosed with cancer todayโ, says Ava Jones in an Instagram video that she made on February 4, which is World Cancer Day. Avaโs just a sophomore in college but already has endured a lifetimeโs worth of pain. A star basketball player recruited by Iowa, she and her family were hit by a car during her senior year of high school. Her father died, and Avaโs injuries forced her to retire from basketball. Now Ava has another fight in front of her. Wikipedia tells me that 88% of people diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma will live 5 years or longer. And people diagnosed under the age of 20 (which is close to Avaโs age) have a 97% survival rate. Sheโs got Hawkeye nation, and a whole lot more behind her.

Dawn Staley on the legacy she hopes to leave: โMy mother grew up in South Carolina. This was the 1940s and early โ50s. Segregation was still legal. Separate bathrooms. All of it. She left the South at the age of 13, seeking equality and opportunity. I think about her a lot โฆ I think about what she made possible for me and maybe what Iโm supposed to make possible for others. She left South Carolina because of the racial divide. I came back with a hope to bridge it. I also know what me coaching here symbolizes in light of history. When I walk around different neighborhoods in this city, Iโll hear Black people say, โI had never been on that campus before coming to your game.โ I understand that my success isnโt about championships โ itโs about bringing together people who were once, and in some ways still are, divided. Itโs bigger than basketball. If I never won another championship but my legacy was that โ to have changed the face of opportunity and united communities โ Iโd take that over most other things in this world.โ #BlackHistoryMonth
