yesterday - door hanger bookmarks to go out with the advanced reader copies of The Book of Doors. This is top-tier swag!

@WmMorrowBooks
in North America. The Dutch translation will already be on the shelves and the UK edition from
@TransworldBooks
will be two days away.
I still don’t quite believe it.
Gratuitous and indulgent photo of my collection of advance reader copies! Look at them… the extra special clothbound hardback and the special shiny paperback.
@TransworldBooks
is showing The Book of Doors a lot of love and I am a very lucky boy.
About to start the journey over to Malaysia to see friends and family. Can’t help but reflect on all that has happened since I last took a flight three years ago. Looking forward to great food and sunshine and good times with May. And good things to come.
Today I received my first ever payment from a book publisher. An exciting moment, and it’s all becoming a bit real.
I say ‘I’ received… I really mean my credit card received.
Just heard that the US edition of The Book of Doors from
@WmMorrowBooks

My fourth ever attempt at making shortbread and I’ve just made the best shortbread I have ever eaten. It’s like discovering a super power. I am now Shortbread Man.
I fell off my chair when I learned that
@LeeChildReacher
had provided this brilliant quote! It’s a dream come true to have anyone read and like something I’ve written - but when it’s one of my favourite authors… 🤯😱
Very excited to receive this wonderful blurb from
@LeeChildReacher
on The Book of Doors by
@GarethJohnBrown
! "A stunning fever dream of a story that feels completely real – don't miss this fantastic thriller debut."
Stock of The Book of Doors now signed in South East Asia’s biggest bookshop - Kinokuniya Singapore! (The novel is shelved under ‘literature’ - alongside John Buchan, a much more famous Scottish novelist.)
The Book of Doors has hit
#25
on the Indie Bestsellers List in the US! Thanks to all the independent bookstores (and
@WmMorrowBooks
) for their support.
I’m told that this officially makes me an International Bestseller… a title I will now use gratuitously!

Sitting in Cafe Kafka in the Literature House in Basel and have signed a foreign rights book contract while having lunch. Peak poncy literary life. Combed my hair especially for it.
Fabulous visit with
@harryillers
to the audiobook recording for The Book of Doors at
@TransworldBooks
today. It was a thrill to hear Miranda Raison bring the book to life. The seemless switching between accents was nothing short of astonishing!
Winners will also receive one TBoD-themed bookmark - either the doorhanger or the library card from the Fox Library (not both, as shown in the photo - I don’t have enough!)
Good luck!
Look at this beautiful cover for the US edition of The Book of Doors from
@WmMorrowBooks

I got a big box of US advance copies today too. I might give some of these away in the next few weeks, but US friends can pre-order here:
A quick visit to
@WstonesEdinGyle
at the very end of the day, and they were putting out a pile of books ahead of tomorrow’s publication date - the most we’ve seen so far! Now all signed…
Stop two on today’s Wild West tour –
@WStonesArgyleST
. Met Jack and Keela who were ever so accommodating – even Dougal and Flora got in on some book action!
It’s our 21st meetiversary, so May and I are having lunch at
@weerestaurant
in North Queensferry - so pleased to be back at our favourite local restaurant after more than a year. The mussels are as good as ever.
Heard some very exciting news about The Book of Doors today. Annoyingly I can’t say anything about it just yet, other than this irritatingly vague tweet…
Watch this space… 👀
Once every nine months, when the planets are in just the right alignment, and the gods look kindly upon us, both dogs will look at the camera at the same time. My wee family at the Skye Bridge today.
I have a minor cold/stomach bug type thing - not Covid - and it’s the first time I’ve been unwell in over two years. How did we ever tolerate two or three colds a year? I am going to wear masks forever.
I am unbelievably lucky to have been able to pay a chunk off our mortgage yesterday, thanks to book money. A dream-come-true moment, so last night we went out for dinner at
@weerestaurant
to celebrate. Amazing food as always.
Over lunch today I finished this amazing book by
@Frances_Writes
. It’s one of my books of the year so far - funny, entertaining and completely satisfying. As good as the cover is pretty!
I exhort you all to buy it when it comes out in January - you won’t be disappointed!
Happy Friday!
Remember last week when I revealed the brilliant trailer for Book of Doors from
@TransworldBooks
? Good times…
Shall we watch it again…? I think we should. Because it is bloody brilliant.
Pre-order now!
I’ve just finished this fabulous book from
@AJWestAuthor
. It’s a clever mystery, a powerful love story, and chock-full of atmosphere and historical detail. One scene near the end affected me more than anything I’ve read in a long time. Essential reading. Out 4 July.
Afternoon tea for May and me
@WAEdinburgh
to celebrate my birthday and all-round general happiness. The pastries were inspired by British biscuits. It was superb.
We are dining at the
@weerestaurant
in North Queensferry to celebrate recent bookish happenings. This bread and butter pudding dessert was the highlight. (Can a meal that ends with bread and butter pudding ever be a disappointment?)
📚 Some doors should never be opened... 📚
Our February 2024 GSFF book is The Book of Doors by
@GarethJohnBrown
Our edition will be signed & numbered with a bespoke dust jacket, digitally sprayed edges & hidden foiling ✨️
We’re back on Skye and we have a great view from our cottage. The dogs survived five hours in the car but now must run furiously and bark at the distant sheep.
I had a lovely time signing at
@FalkirkWtstones
this morning - thanks to Laura and Louise for the warm welcome. I even bought my first ever Sarah J Maas on a recommendation by Louise!
Thanks to
@WJHG_TV
for picking The Book of Doors for their Chapters Chat bookclub this month. I got to be a giant head on live TV this morning too, which was great fun.
Amazing lunch at
@TheFatDuckBray
for May’s birthday - where the food came disguised as fob watches, playing cards or rocket ice lollies, amongst other things. A real experience and great service too.
Today I had a trip into Edinburgh for the first ever in-person meeting of the
@NHSNSS
screening oversight team. We had drinks and chips and good chat. It’s so nice to meet people in person for the first time.
@Tasmin1974
@proud_david
It’s Malaysia’s 65th National Day today, so to celebrate May has spent many hours preparing dinner - vegetable curry, garlic mushroom rice and beef curry puffs. What a lucky boy I am.
I’ve been fine not travelling during lockdown, but I’ve just starting to miss it. I miss being somewhere else, making new memories with May. I even miss being annoyed by airports. Thinking back on our fab trip to the US two years ago. Loved the Oregon coast.
Wow! After a starred review in Booklist, I’ve just heard that The Book of Doors has also now received a starred review in
@LibraryJournal
, the American trade publication for librarians. Amazing! (Thanks Library Journal and
@WmMorrowBooks
!)
Very excited today to get an advance copy of
@AJWestAuthor
’s upcoming novel, The Betrayal of Thomas True (pre-orders: ).
Look how beautiful this cover is! I loved The Spirit Engineer, Andy’s first book, so can’t wait to dive into this.
I love seeing stories that talk about the growing evidence of the real world impact of HPV vaccines. I played a very small part in supporting the introduction of HPV vaccination in Scotland and it remains one of the things I am most proud of.
Stop 6 on the Book of Doors tour of Manhattan. It’s an apartment building above a cheesecake shop on the edge of Chinatown - where Cassie and Izzy live.
#thebookofdoors
I have watched Back to the Future more times than I can count, and I still get stressed when Doc Brown has to reconnect the cables before the lightning strikes the clock tower. Like one time he might not make it.
Amazing birthday-eve dinner at Number One in Edinburgh. May insisted I pose with the petit fours, which was annoying because I wanted to inhale them immediately. Fabulous experience - I still flinch at unpasteurised cheese on a menu though.
Just finished The Dying Squad by
@adamsimcox
- I had a great time and romped through it in two sittings. Some great twists I didn’t see coming, and the Xylophone Man alone was worth the price of admission.
Back at
@weerestaurant
for a Friday night dinner. Still our favourite - great food and welcomed like friends. If only all weekends could start this way…
Author copies of the beautiful
US edition of The Book of Doors have arrived! Look at those endpapers! Get yours (if you are in the US…) on February 13.
@WmMorrowBooks
Sitting in Newark Airport waiting to board our flight. You know what would be handy right now…? Something that would let us just walk through a door and be home straight away…
What a rush. Phoned a customer services line for a major airline about a complex refund issue and I got through immediately, got a helpful person who understood my issue straight away and who took decisive action. This is what it’s like when the world works as it should.
What a thrill to see a tweet like this from the author of one of my favourite reads of last year - thanks
@AJWestAuthor
! I hope the rest of it lives up to the first chapter!

Managed to change a faulty extractor fan in the bathroom without electrocuting myself or drilling holes in the wrong place. Never felt so accomplished. Ready to build a log cabin single-handedly.
Three hours this evening, 4.5k words written and after four months, the first complete draft of what will hopefully be book 2 is complete.
This one was a bit of a wrestle so I’m glad it’s done. Can’t bear the thought of redrafts just yet.
Thanks to
@Tasmin1974
for giving me this special key ring today, marking the Dutch publication of The Book of Doors! I am very lucky to work with some brilliant, lovely people.
At some point in the next few days I might be uploading an actual trailer for a certain upcoming book*… Keep your 👀 peeled…
(*My book, in case that was not clear.)
(Also: who knew that books could have a trailer?!)
