Easy "anyone can do with minimal effort" Retro-brighting tutorial:
I have been asked many times how I retro-bright things, so I wanted to share the method I used, that's very simple, requires no special tech and gives fantastic results.
(Use relevant PPE, gloves etc.)
Thread:
I've done 20 years on
@Steam
, 20 years!
I still get asked for my age:
1) How the heck don't they know I'm over 18, I've selected it about 3,000 times.
2) If I've been a user for 20+ years, can they not do simple mathematics?
🤣🤣🤣
My first ever Retrobrighting experiment, this is a '93/'94 DEC Digital PS/2 PC mouse, I don't have time to wash it today, but I'm really happy with the result! 👍
My absolute all-time favourite MS-DOS gaming laptop: The Toshiba 320CDT, Pentium 233 MMX, the screen on this is 800x600 amazingly clear TFT, it also has a floppy and CD-ROM built inband SB Pro V3 and OPL3 Adlib sound.
I've got a Win98SE/MS-DOS dual boot, it also has working WiFi.
Last year I recreated my first childhood PC - an Intel 386DX-25. 😍
I've finally sourced new HDD, Turbo and Power LEDs which had blown in the case, looking forward to putting the finishing touches to it.
Playing a little DOOM on my Dell Inspiron 3000 - Pentium 233Mhz MMX from 1997 in MS-DOS 6.22.
It blows my mind that when it was released it cost $3,999, which is around $7,843 today 🤯
25 years ago, remember when nearly every household had a scanner on their computer desk!
When you bought your beige computer, it was a standard bit of kit!
Windows 1.0 - 4x 5.25" 💾
Windows 2.0 - 4x 5.25" 💾
Windows NT - 7x 3.5" 💾
Windows 3.** - 8x 3.5" 💾

OpenGL Quake II running on Windows 98SE at 1400x1050 >54FPS, music is perfect and everything is flawless.
I'm going to do a driver pack and share it with anyone interested in playing.
I feel like making an old html website, accessible by retro computers with useful files and info, I'm thinking I'll use Macromedia Dreamweaver 3, like back in my old webdev days....
On this day, 26 years ago (June 25, 1998) Microsoft Windows 98 was released generally to retail. It's probably my all time favourite MS OS, I have so many good memories from that era:
Winamp, mp3's, DVD playback, P2P, classic games, 1st Broadband experience, Eax, SB Live! ☺️
I have a new retro computer to check out; I'm happy to report that the packaging was VERY good and has sustained no damage at all.
🍏 Apple Power Macintosh G4 400 (AGP)🍏
I have bought 5x Iomega ZIP100 drives in 2023, none of them have worked! I've taken a gamble on number six, these things have not stood the test of time, so fingers crossed for this one! 🤞
Doing Windows updates in Windows 98SE makes me feel like I've time travelled back to when I ran a computer shop, back 25 years ago. My happy nostalgia place 😊
I'm really, really getting into OS/2 Warp 4, it blows me away that this gem was doing its thing alongside Windows 95, it's a bloody beautiful OS. What better OS to test and format a load of floppies, the built-in disk checker is great! 👍
Napster launched in June 1999, forever changing the music industry and forcing change. Although it was by no means the first filesharing platform, specialising in MP3's it came at just the right time to shake everything up - at its peak it had 80 million active users!
Sun SPARCstation LX update:
I have the internet working in Solaris 7 (SunOS 5.7). Obviously I had to load up the oldest website on the internet (it's been live since August 6, 1991), it predates this computer by just over a year. Buzzing! 👍🤓
