TWA B707 at Gander c.1973. TWA was one of the first companies to use Gander airport in 1946 on a scheduled basis. TWA had an ops office at the airport with a full compliment of dispatchers & AMEs stationed in Gander to service their fleet.

Memorial to Arrow Air DC8 N950JW crashed at Gander airport Dec 12, 1985. The 248 passengers & 8 crew onboard died becoming the largest loss of life in an aviation accident in Canadian history. 🇺🇸

A flashback to the startup of post war commercial transatlantic aviation showing the gift counter in the terminal at Gander Airport c 1949. The terminal was located in a renovated portion of WWII RAF hangar 22. The present day terminal was officially opened in 1959 by QEII.

BOAC , now BA, has been an important part of Gander's history since the end of WWII with the opening here of an ops office & maintenance facility. The image shows the last British Airways B747 G-BYGB to use Gander airport for servicing c.2020. Tks @briggs_aero

High Level Domestic sector at Gander ATC c.1976. Radar was mainly used for climbing/descending aircraft using scan converted radar information onto a CRT. Air traffic was not radar monitored but controlled using info on flight data strips until 1981.

Converted Lancaster bomber as a mid air tanker, at Gander c.1947. FPL, a UK company, set up a flight testing base at Gander to develop technical procedures in air-to-air refueling, later to be adopted by the military. This story & photos

Talk about foresight. A Westinghouse ad from a 1939 magazine promoting the newly opened Nfld. (Gander) Airport showing the airport beacon. The ad states "Westinghouse provides complete Illumination at Newfoundland Airport to bring improved safety for transatlantic flying".

Seaboard Western DC4 at Gander c.1954. The company was the worlds 1st airline dedicated to cargo transportation. Founded on Sept 11, 1946, by Arthur & Ray Norden, both USAAF Transport Command pilots . The airline had an operations office at Gander up until the mid 1960's.

2 views of Gander's first hangar, H20 . 1st, under construction in 1937 & the 2nd when EPA took possession in the early 1950's to maintain their 'bush/mail' fleet operations & maintenance before becoming an inter provincial airline.

Transavia Airlines B720 at Gander c.1975. Transavia Airline, owned by KLM Royal Dutch Airline, is a subsidiary airline used for low budget charter work. The B720, a mini B707, was a frequent visitor at Gander due to their short fuel range.

During WWII the great Glenn Miller described the RCAF Streamliners as "the best band in Europe…other than mine”. The band originated at RCAF Gander & because they were so good, were posted to the UK to entertain the troops. The story told @ web page

Queen Elizabeth II visited the town in 1959, to officially open the new terminal at Gander airport. It was said, this gesture was her way thanking the airport for its service in WWII.

Feb 20 1941, Sir Frederick Banting was killed when the Hudson bomber he was on board, crashed here, very near Musgrave Hr. NL after leaving Gander. The photo is of the actual crash scene.The saga of the crash, heard around the world, is told here

The original cast of the Broadway Show "Come From Away" at Gander airport where they arrived for a performance to honour the residents of Gander & surrounding towns. The cast performed two benefit concerts of the entire Broadway play, on October 29, 2016.

The Gander airport has made aviation contributions over the years but non greater than the effort in WWII ferrying over 20,000 bombers to the UK plus providing a base for RCAF 10BR Sqn. carrying out convoy protection to Atlantic shipping.
