I have a new HD reconstruction of the US version of Rodan available. Built from the ground up with special attention to presenting all material in the best possible quality. Contact me for details.
I knew that reconstructing the International version of Godzilla vs Biollante was going to be a big task. There are 70+ different burnt-in Japanese subtitles to remove to start with. The main issue with that is, as far as I am aware, the International edit has only been released
Another AIP reconstruction using one of the recent restorations.

The X From Outer Space should have been an easy reconstruction. However, it quickly became clear that there were a lot more minor edits in the AIP TV version than most people realized. So I needed a better version of the AIP edit and
@ultrase7en721
came through with a beautiful
Brand new 2021 HD reconstruction of The War of the Gargantuas is available now! Below are some notes about this recon and some of the issues in creating an HD version.

I'm excited to announce my latest reconstruction of a tokusatsu US dub - Tidal Wave (1975)
I’ve always admired the scale behind Japan Sinks (1973). And, I have wanted to work on a reconstruction of the US edition, Tidal Wave, for a long time. When I heard about the recent UHD

My day job gets hectic around this time each year, so I wanted a fairly simple reconstruction project to work on as stress relief. As projects go, Son of Godzilla seemed like an ideal choice; at least at first glance. The US version cuts out an opening sequence, but after that
While its impossible to make a 'silk purse out of a sow's ear' here's a side-by-side showing the improved Frontier Missile sequence in my new Godzilla vs The Thing recon. Dirt and blemishes removed as much as possible and color-graded.
Here's another clip from one of my HD MST3K remasters - Gamera. The incomparable Sandy Frank version, with the original shadowcast matted in.

And here's an interesting couriosity from Monster Zero. The new 4K resorations have included much more picture area than in the past. Sometimes, too much. Check the lower right corner where you can see the flat the starfield is leaning on (zoomed in 2nd pic).

Much of the stock footage had blurred frames and problems from a poor 3:2 pulldown with the original telecine. After much work these have been corrected.
Not much to say as these were pretty straight-forward recreations of the US releases. Reconstructing the opening and closing titles gave a few challenges, but I think they both turned out well. Here’s some samples from Dagora (Dogora).

Finally had a chance to listen to this great podcast! Derek & Doug, just to add to your confusion, here is the title screen from the International version of the film. Note the article AND plural. 😂
I have made several HD reconstructions of tokusatsu films over the years. All the Godzilla films, and more recently several of Toho's other early films, such as Rodan, Mysterians, Atragon & Human Vapor. DM me for details.
Here is a video showing the unrestored footage on the left and restored on the right. Even with the red tint you will notice the flashes of color "splotches" along with the normal dirt and scratches on the left side of the image. After much work I'm very happy with the restored
I always wanted to watch some old Mystery Science Theater movies in HD, with the full MST3K experience. So I made my own. 😊 Some short samples for others to check out.

Here's another capture from the Frontier Missile sequence in my Godzilla vs The Thing reconstruction. The top shows the upscalled, but dirty image, and below the 'clean' version in the final recon. DM for more details.

Of course, here are the comparison shots. The new restorations are so crisp and clear, with more picture area than previous transfers. DM me for details on the reconstruction.
The credits posed an issue because they were such low quality. For now, I decided to create visually similar titles to better blend with the other HD material.

No, based off of my own restoration of the raw film scans. More details as soon as I finish my write up about all the work that went into this.
Its been awhile, but I have another classic Toho English-dub reconstruction ready to share. Lots of notes, so I tried to include an overview in the attached image. If you're interested in checking this out just DM me.

Making an HD version of Rodan is a project I've revisited over the years. There are so many low quality stock footage segments that I just couldn't blend seamlessly with the HD Japanese footage. With the help of some new software last year I'm finally happy with the results.
@na81992647
The Japanese footage is all from the 4K restoration, US footage is upscaled using AI software and both combined to give a make a great viewing experience.
@KingofMunsters1
The Criterion version is actually the Japanese version (with Internation English). What I've done is an HD reconstruction of the US version which is significantly different, has new scenes not in the Japanese dub, and and several altered scenes as well.
For the US version, there are several sections of stock footage material. Until I can get access to better quality, I did the best I could to upscale and grade this footage, and blend it with the widescreen Japanese material.

@strikefire100
The goal is to recreate the International version - which never had those burnt-in subtitles. Using the Japanese footage as it was wouldn't achieve the reconstruction effort.
@KingofMunsters1
Yeah, these original US dubs are disappearing and are likely never going to get an HD release. Toho has only been approving releases with their sub-par dubs. It's nice to have the Japanese versions, but even those are typically desaurated and/or graded on poorly color-graded.
@ryuuseipro
The audio is from a recording I made with my phone. That pretty much necessitated replacing the visuals. Those were taken from the Toho bluray (and obviously massively corrected). Thanks!
@na81992647
As far as I know their project completed their scanning a couple of years ago. I haven't seen updates posted recently though. I was given access to raw scans myself, but I don't know where these were sourced from. Just decided I wanted an full HD version to watch for now. 😊
The other issue with Rodan is the special effects footage that is unique to the US edition only. Again, I finally feel like I was able to improve these well enough to blend uniformly with the HD material around it.
