A thalamocortical network model implicated the modulation of precise timing of feedforward thalamic population spiking, presenting a highly sensitive, timing-based gating of sensory signaling to the cortex. 5/6

Optogenetic hyperpolarization of thalamus induced sensory-driven bursting that enhanced the cortical response through increased timing precision, more focused spatial activation, and increased synchronization of cortical inhibitory neurons. 4/6

Using optogenetics with multi-site electrophysiology, we describe a dynamic gating of signaling of touch that is highly sensitive to precise timing of neural activity, which could underlie changes in how we sense during different states of arousal. 3/6

Four decades ago, Crick proposed a provocative hypothesis – that the thalamus serves as a dynamic gate for controlling what we sense about the outside world. Until recently, the techniques just simply didn’t exist to test this theory. 2/6

Congrats to Peter Borden and Caleb Wright in their recent Neuron paper “Thalamic bursting and the role of timing and synchrony in thalamocortical signaling in the awake mouse”. See News & Views by Wyche and O’Connor. 1/6.

Excited about a marathon study whose nucleus started for me 20+ years ago! Great work from Peter Borden, Caleb Wright, and team on Thalamic Gating of Sensory Signaling, hot off the press at Neuron! Lots of good non-science stories about getting this out!

Why do we know so little about how the brain integrates signals from two sides of the body? The first part of our project on this topic is now published, with Dr. Aurelie Pala at the helm!
