For #heritageMW , did you know that we've been a part of the Waltham/Watertown community for over 200 years? First as a private residence with a farm and employment, then as a country club, and now as a museum and farm. Here's a view of the property in 1920.

Since it seems like everyone is baking bread: did you know that the Gores had a Rumford kitchen? This was located in the basement and was very high-tech and new. He paid $148 in 1806 for the Rumford kitchen and $88 for the installation.

Gore Place has an extensive collection of replica historical dishes. One of our favorites is this Marzipan Hedgehog! This could be eaten cold or used as a spectacular centerpiece. Hannah Glasse’s “The Art of Cookery made Plain and Easy,” written in 1796, explains how to make one.

Today, we are fortunate to have Gore’s court suit in our collection. The suit made of silk taffeta with polychrome silk embroidery comprises three pieces: a dark brown taffeta frock coat, a white silk taffeta waistcoat, and brown taffeta breeches—all lined in cotton or linen.

Brrrrr! It’s been cold lately. But a sheep’s wool coat keeps them warm all winter long. Our sheep, Leicester Longwool, have a long staple of wool that is loved by many fiber artists. Psst...there’s an adorable lamb in this photo! Can you see it?

Why do we have a dish of flies out in the Gores' bedroom? They wouldn't have had screens in their windows, so you needed fly catchers to deal with insects in hot weather. Robert Roberts included a recipe for fly catchers in his book which we used as inspiration.
