👍👍 to @mbeisen on this thread "Publishing is a toxic mix of arbitrary decisions and artificial scarcity whose highly non-linear relationship between actual assessment and career currency inevitably brings out the worst in people".
As a former journal EIC, I want to take issues with this claim by Science's EIC that negative interactions between scientists and editors are driven by a lack of respect for people who don't run research labs.

@copenhaverlab @mbeisen Based on some of H Thorpe's previous editorials, he enjoys the role of provocateur. If you're going to "provoc", expect to be challenged -- and mbeisen's reply was right on the money

If anyone was wondering what @BrianNosek meant when he referred to the "disconnect between what's good for scientists and what's good for science", here it is
Last week, I described our paper on climate change and wildfires: I am very proud of this research overall. But I want to talk about how molding research presentations for high-profile journals can reduce its usefulness & actually mislead the public.

@hholdenthorp Based on this tweet, the EiC of Science either doesn't understand the rationale behind OA and Plan S (frightening), or is intentionally misleading his followers (disappointing). Either way, not a good look for him or his journal.
