@mattyglesias @Austen I'm curious what your threshold for success is, separate from whether you believe DOGE will succeed in balancing the budget. How much would the deficit have to close by?

@stuartbuck1 @Austen I don't think we have to accept that much waste, or the types of waste we have, as the status quo. And some waste is inevitable. Both can be true

@spock627corfu @DKThomp What's the difference between waste and fraud, other than intent? The outcome is the same.

@spock627corfu @DKThomp Sure, I don't know the details of what the kid did or how that's relevant to the problem DOGE is trying to solve.

@spock627corfu @DKThomp Do I worry that one person with read access to sensitive systems can ruin the country by himself? No, that's obviously ridiculous. However, I do think that kid is 99th percentile in technical abilities compared to the entire federal employee population.

@spock627corfu @DKThomp Except in your scenario the plane can't be landed, and it's only a question of when and not if it crashes, and it's built mostly with parts that aren't needed to fly and the only way to save it from crashing is removing those part mid flight.

@DKThomp This is a philosophical debate on the approach DOGE is taking. There's no way to get savings DOGE is going for by evaluating every dollar spent on its merits before cutting. It won't scale. The options are cut deep, risk breaking things and fix them later, or the status quo.

@RafRice @RichardHanania Do universities extract the max from every grant? If the de-facto standard is 60%, no one is going to ask for 10% even if more is not needed. I'm sure any number is easy enough to justify. And to be clear, I'm not sure how I feel about this.

@RafRice @RichardHanania Most of these sound like one time expenses. Having a hard time understanding why every grant to a university has the same overhead.

@zachweinberg There has to be performance accountability before we pay market rates, but it would definitely revolutionize the federal bureaucracy if agencies could compete for talent with private sector.

@BryanOffutt @LM_Braswell Context is important. Formal PRDs are not as important if you don't have specific requirements from a customer, you're trying to find market fit, etc. But you better at least have an idea of what problem you're trying to solve, and that you can clearly articulate it it.

@Noahpinion The example is Arabs who voted for Trump because Biden was not stopping Israel. If they thought Trump was going to restrain Israel, they weren't paying attention. Trump's position on Hamas was quite clear. And his current positions on on Gaza is an uncomfortable but pragmatic.
