If the new order allows only non-contact indoor sports through at least February 21, it’s basically time for student-athletes & coaches to break away from the
@MHSAA
— or, better yet, have the MHSAA deregulate. We can play 🏀 at private facilities in & out of state.
#TimeToMoveOn
While we wait patiently for
@GovWhitmer
,
@MDHHS_Director
&
@MichiganHHS
to do the right thing this week, it is equally important that the
@MHSAA
Rep. Council deregulate athletes & coaches ASAP so that teams can play elsewhere without consequence. Please do what’s best for kids!
Impressed with the fact that
@MHSAA
Rep Council members sent out a survey to ADs today seeking input about tough winter/spring sports decisions they are facing. The bottom line is if we don’t get the Feb. 1 start date back, it’s an absolute mess. So keep pushing!
#LetThemPlay
While we wait & hope for
@GovWhitmer
&
@MDHHS_Director
to
#LetThemPlay
on or before Feb. 1, two things MUST happen: 1) The 🏀 community cannot let up! 2)
@MHSAA
must prepare to deregulate athletes & coaches temporarily from Feb. 1-21 if the government fails us!
#RightThingToDo
Time to deregulate,
@MHSAA
! Remove the handcuffs! There are 🏀 opportunities everywhere despite the order. You just need to step aside for a while.
#LetThemPlay
#LetThemCoach
5 ways to improve HS 🏀 in Michigan:
✳️ 35-second shot clock
✳️ 6 personal fouls
✳️ 5 divisions
✳️ Seed the entire regional (new proposal)
✳️ Shoot 2 FTs after 5th team foul & reset each quarter (like college women & pros)
The media is shedding light on injustice. The monster group,
@letthemplay_mi
, is firing on all cylinders. Athletes, coaches & parents are preparing for a huge rally on Saturday. What we need now is your support,
@SenStabenow
&
@SenGaryPeters
. Enough is enough!
#LetThemPlay
Prep sports media, not to mention regular news media, is one of the missing pieces in the current movement by the state’s 🏀 community to get our Feb. 1 start date back. Now is the time, folks! There’s a story out there & you’re missing it! Bring this injustice to the forefront!
Congrats on your new position,
@MDHHS_Director
! And what an opportunity for you to analyze the data and collaborate with
@GovWhitmer
and the rest of the
@MichiganHHS
to reestablish Feb. 1 as the date where 🏀 can be played without restriction again. Enough is enough!
#LetThemPlay
One of the obvious dynamics right now is that
@GovWhitmer
& the
@MichiganHHS
know that the HS 🏀 season is a perishable item. As the delay continues, our season is rotting before our very eyes.
@MHSAA
...it’s time to deregulate! Let the players play & the coaches coach!
Special moment last night competing against
@DerekSeidl
during an exhibition game at
@NapoleonHoops
. Another life experience that I will cherish, and, of course, another 🤦 story to tell for years to come! 😂🏀
Do not let up, 🏀 community! The press release citing occasional outbreaks due to athletics changes nothing! If zero transmission is the goal, then we would need to close everything — work places, schools, restaurants, entertainment venues, etc. Enough is enough!
#LetThemPlay
A lot of star power at today’s rally, with
@Hugeshow
,
@JoeyRadio
,
@RepHuizenga
, Darren McCarty,
@AndreRisonPro
& others taking the stage. But the real stars were all of the student-athletes who spoke so eloquently and their peers who were there in support. Great day!
#LetThemPlay
Grateful and moved by the.
@OlivetHighVB
program’s gesture to honor my mother, who passed away a month ago, with her last name on the back of their “Pink-Out” shirts today. Our student-athletes and coaches are amazing!
#FindACure
#TheOlivetWay
Let me get this straight. The prep sports world takes one for the team and has zero privileges the last 3 weeks, yet COVID-19 cases & deaths continue to rise. So the adjustment is to keep sticking it to HS sports since it is one of the few things government can control? Got it...
How can anyone read this data, especially the 3rd & 4th bullets (along w/ the table),
and not conclude that something shady and/or political is going on behind the scenes? Shame on you,
@GovWhitmer
,
@MichiganHHS
&
@MDHHS_Director
! And shame on anyone not speaking out against it!
This may sound old-school, but when did summer 🏀 become meaningless to so many?
- Players missing time for inexplicable reasons 🤷🏼♂️
- Coaches sitting with legs crossed and saying very little 🤷🏼♂️
- Officials stating, “Relax, it’s just summer ball 🤷🏼♂️

Looking forward to hearing from you today,
@BCAMCoaches
! More than clinics, camps, postseason awards, etc., this is your opportunity to lead your membership and impact change within the
@MichiganHHS
and the
@MHSAA
. Use your power!
Here we go again! The MHSAA district 🏀 brackets get released and there are multiple scenarios where a
#1
seed may have to play a
#3
seed in the semifinals while the
#2
seed has a much clearer path to the 🏆 game. What are we doing? Just seed the entire freakin’ district! 🤦🏼♂️
He’ll probably be embarrassed by this post, but congratulations to
@NapoleonHoops
coach
@DerekSeidl
on being named
@BCAMCoaches
Region 4 Coach of the Year! Well deserved after a 22-2 campaign that included a Cascades Conference 🏆…
We start the day skeptical that
@GovWhitmer
& the
@MichiganHHS
will lead with common sense. But as part of the
@MHSAA
membership, we have confidence that the Rep Council will do what’s best for student-athletes. Let the players play and the coaches coach!
#Deregulate
“Private schools have an inherent advantage over public schools due to their athletic-motivated enrollment.”
That statement always comes to mind when I 👀 a strong public school team end its season with a loss to a private school team. It happens way too much!
#BuiltDifferent
Despite “non-contact” practices since Jan. 16, it has been exciting to see
@OlivetBoysHoop
develop skills, conditioning & chemistry. What hasn’t felt right is the look of despondency on their faces after the senseless
@MichiganHHS
extension Friday. Enough is enough!
#LetThemPlay
Dear
@MHSAA
:
If the goal is to get student-athletes back in action, be consistent & deactivate the Limited Team Membership rule for 🏀 teams! The MHSAA’s control over events during the state’s shutdown is not essential, especially since the rule doesn’t apply to 🏒 & 🤼.
Definitely proud of
@DerekSeidl
, who today celebrated his master’s degree at the
@UMich
School of Education graduation ceremony at Hill Auditorium. And who delivered the Commencement speech? Well...none other than
@JohnBeilein
. Now that’s a good day!
Clearly a productive off-season for the
@NapoleonHoops
head coach! Congrats to
@DerekSeidl
&
@Danac_BigHam
on their engagement! And, from a father‘s perspective, it’s about time! 💍😂
Let’s cut to the chase. I respect some private schools & the talent they assemble. But I also feel the MHSAA should offset their inherent advantage by making D4, D3 & D2 schools play up a classification in all sports — and up 2 in 🏈. It would even the playing field considerably.

True Story: A gentleman at the airport asks about my hoodie. He explains he’s an Oregon graduate and is curious if the “O Eagles” is a tribute to Chip Kelly and his days with Oregon and the Philadelphia Eagles. Turns out the man is
@SportsCenter
anchor Neil Everett.
#GreatVoice
Exciting to see Michigan high school gyms open for something that benefits student-athletes. That said, do you mind if we get in some shots on a side basket? 😳🏀
Absolutely love this team & feel terrible that our time together has ended. And while the core of this group is 53-7 over the last three seasons, perhaps its biggest accomplishment is changing the program’s culture and getting
@OlivetBoysHoop
back where it belongs!
Received this tidbit in our
@BCAMCoaches
newsletter this morning. To put it mildly, I’m embarrassed for the majority of my colleagues (athletic directors). Provide your student-athletes & coaches with the experience they desire!
Excited for
@tony_seidl2
&
@shelbea_james
, who combined their weekend trip to New York City with an engagement announcement. 💍 Congrats you two!
Considering Yankee Stadium wasn’t available, the location of the marriage proposal was perfect!
With all due respect
@MHSAA
, this is a lame excuse for not deactivating the limited team membership rule. There will be 🏀 opportunities regardless of where you live. And no one cared last summer when northern teams were in gyms & everyone else was outside.
#LetThemPlayNOW
Remember this stuff seven months ago? Unbelievable! These student-athletes have jumped through every hoop imaginable in order to play this winter. Enough is enough!
#LetThemPlay
If you believe the content in this interview of
@MHSAA
Executive Director Mark Uyl on the
@Hugeshow
today — and there’s no reason not to — it’s difficult to have faith in our government. What a total disservice to the athletes and coaches in our state!
Thanks to
@nate_oats
and
@AlabamaMBB
for allowing
@jtropea13
and I some access to Crimson Tide basketball over the past two days — not to mention a timely tailgate meal prior to today’s football game.
#RollTide
Congrats to
@ChelseaBoysHoop
on its 46-32 district championship victory over Onsted tonight at Adrian High School! Very cool to see Adrian legend
@gregstephens45
accept the trophy for the Bulldogs...
In response to all of these young guns posting home workout videos, let me show you what years & years of lazy country-club pre-practice shooting can do for you. 💪🏀😎

#VeryLowCardio
Extremely happy for
@jcorndavis
, who tonight coached
@SplitterNation
to its first regional championship in school history. Jesse was a heck of a player at Willow Run back in the day and is now leading young men on an incredible journey! via
@YouTube
Couldn’t be more proud of this guy! Despite more adversity this 🏈 season than most coaches experience in a career,
@priddyg1733
has provided incredible leadership for our student-athletes — and the efforts were rewarded last night with a “confirming” win at Lansing Catholic.
My dad and I had a lot in common. Some even say we looked alike, although I’m not so sure based on our HS senior pictures. 😳 Today, which would have been his 85th birthday, I kind of wish we had one more opportunity to talk about the boys, or sports, or whatever.
#Reminiscing
“Counties around the country have faced outbreaks of COVID-19 associated with sports teams. These outbreaks have the potential...to affect the community in which the players & coaches reside.” Seriously? That’s the argument? Can’t we say that about all interactions?
@MichiganHHS
Congrats to
@NapoleonHoops
coach
@DerekSeidl
on being named
@BCAMCoaches
Region 4 Coach of the Year for the 2nd straight year! He is fortunate to work with great kids & parents at Napoleon, but no one puts in more time — evidenced by a 71-14 record & two Cascades 🏆🏆 in 4 years.
The value of the 🏀 shot clock was on full display Thursday during the Shot Clock Classic at Spring Arbor. Both the Northwest-Hanover & Jackson-Napoleon games were wire jobs, yet no one could hold the ball until the final :35. This is where the focus of
@MHSAA
studies should be.
A clutch trey by
@tony_seidl2
lifts the
@UMDearbornMBB
JV squad over Northwood tonight! Perhaps greater impact came from the team’s second-half defense and the addition of Ypsilanti HS graduate Spencer Robinson to the roster tonight...
#GoBlue
Haven’t seen this much hype (sell-out at Ypsilanti HS) over a local hooper since the Chris Webber days. Emoni Bates is definitely a talented player, and it should be interesting to see how he develops. That said, the
@RiverRougeBB
team he played against today is legit!
Sorry for the background noise from Kenan, but couldn’t resist snagging a video of this game-winner for
@DexterHoops
by
@parachek
. Dexter 52, Brighton 49!
#MarchMadness
Been involved in educational athletics one way or another for over 40 years. Hate to see so many on social media losing faith in them right now. But it’s hard to blame people for feeling that way. Educational athletics are letting down student-athletes, coaches, parents & fans!
Proud of the
@OlivetBoysHoop
players who just completed their 7th day of workouts in preparation for a 🏀 season that our irresponsible state government may never endorse. It’s clear, too, that they don’t need to be
@MHSAA
-affiliated to be happy. So we will play!
#TimeToMoveOn
Hard not to pull for this guy! Helluva player who said all the right things during his post-game interview, including the words, “I get that from my dad.” 😎

Disappointment with the
@MHSAA
& its Rep Council runs deeper than with
@GovWhitmer
& the
@MichiganHHS
. The government’s lack of compassion is no longer a surprise. But the group that claims to be fighting for student-athletes has failed miserably by not deregulating winter teams!
Concerned that MHSAA Representative Council is not very representative of the state’s basketball community. Had an opportunity to serve its members by allowing 2 games on non-school days, extending the season into early April, expanding to 6 divisions, etc. But we’ll adjust...
Time well spent tonight watching a quarterfinal 🏀 game between Tecumseh & Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard! Impressive players, coaches & crowd! And congrats to Coach Tim Cain on his first trip to the Final Four! I continue to live vicariously through former assistant coaches…😂
The message here is unclear to say the least. The only part that remains obvious is the
@MichiganHHS
is not listening, has yet to identify metrics, and has little interest in righting a wrong. Maybe they open things up Monday. If not, time for the
@MHSAA
to loosen the reins!
Complete garbage on so many levels…
These are 🏀 results from the May 7-8 MHSAA Representative Council Meeting. 🤦🏼♂️ In other words, I don’t feel very “represented.”
With clearly too much time on our hands,
@jtropea13
,
@DerekSeidl
& yours truly have collaborated on a new podcast that focuses on prep 🏀 in the greater A2 area. Here’s a link to our intro episode, which, amazingly, includes only a few technical glitches...
Took in the Napoleon-Williamston 🏀 game this morning at SAU. And while I definitely had a rooting interest with
@DerekSeidl
coaching the Pirates, couldn’t help but admire both coaches, including Hornet boss
@CoachVroom
. Two young coaches making a difference with their programs!
“Re-engaging incrementally as we did this past summer is really important.” —
@GovWhitmer
We get that, and that’s why we’re still standing 72 days after our 🏀 season was scheduled to start. But Feb. 1 is the end of the road. Enough is enough!

@MichiganHHS
WINTER SPORTS:
One of the most asked questions we are getting from viewers is about high school winter sports being pushed back and not being allowed to begin.
I asked
@GovWhitmer
about that for
@9and10News
today. ⤵️
There are people in schools, malls, casinos, workplaces, etc. who are positive & likely spreading the virus. Are we shutting them down? No. We are managing the situation...and that’s exactly what we should be doing with HS 🏀. Another example of 🏀 being singled out. Ridiculous!
We shouldn't need the governor to tell us we can't play high school hoops right now. We can't play because there might not be a sport more unfit for this pandemic than 5-on-5 indoor basketball played without regular COVID testing.
Column.
With 〽️🏈 on a bye week, what better time for a little getaway — and what better place than Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which just happens to be hosting an important football game tomorrow. To pass time, of course, we decided to snoop around some of the facilities...
#RollTide
Nothing to hang heads about when it comes to
@NapoleonHoops
! True, they deserved better last night and had to stomach some ridiculous antics, but back-2-back league 🏆🏆, another 20-win season and a county-best 71-14 record since 2020 is phenomenal! And they do it the right way!
While I won the coach vs. player (Saline vs. Dexter) competition against
@DerekSeidl
in 2011, he got a little revenge tonight in the AD vs. assistant coach (Olivet vs. Chelsea) battle. That said, it is exciting to watch him begin what promises to be a successful coaching career.
Does anyone have a patent on this thing? 😳 Played at Portland HS last Saturday and these were provided for both scorekeepers to display their respective team’s remaining timeouts.
#CuttingEdge
🤷🏼♂️
Bill Belichick is a tremendous example for young coaches in any sport. While building relationships and making sure everyone’s having fun is important, the real success comes when teams play with discipline and do all the so-called “little things” well.
Our latest “Coach Speak” podcast features an interview with humble Lincoln head coach

Heard a lot of discussion about 🏀 MPR this week. Is it a flawed formula? You be the judge…
Team A is 4-0 and defeated Team B by 23 points on Team B’s court. Team B is 1-5. But Team B has a higher MPR than Team A. 😳
Bottom line is too much weight is given to opponents’ win %!
Thanks to
@SpringportHoops
& Coach
@DerekSeidl
for allowing this old coach to work the Spartans’ youth camp this week. What a great group of kids, not to mention some promising talent! And D ran the show like he’s been doing it his entire life!

“Even with mitigation measures in place...disease transmission cannot be completely prevented when players are in prolonged or intense contact.”
@MichiganHHS
— how insulting to send this statement to
@FOX17Zach
. Is there anything we’re doing that completely prevents transmission?
One of the best things to come out of this pandemic is the live streaming technology that high schools are using for athletics. Appreciate the
@NFHSNetwork
and all it has done in this area. That said, tonight‘s menu included a 58-48 victory by
@NapoleonHoops
over Lumen Christi…
