The 'WORLD SERIES OR BUST' Atlanta Braves
(Article -updated with new stuff on Spencer Strider)
ATLANTA — Getting bounced from the playoffs in the Divisional Series in back-to-back seasons is a bitter pill to swallow. But suffering both defeats at the hands of the Phillies is
Ronald Acuña Jr is on pace to make history. Projected:
.344, 36 HR, 99 RBI, 67 SB
That would make him the first 30/60 player (30 HR, 60 SB) ever in MLB.
Barry Bonds and Eric Davis are the only members of the 30/50 club.
Matt Olson has turned into the second coming of Adam Dunn this year.
Dunn, in his prime, was generally good for .230, 40 HR, 100+ RBI, 210 SO, and a .350+ OBP.
Olson's projected totals this year:
.229, 46 HR, 114 RBI, .344 OBP, 214 SO
Dunn: Career .854 OPS
Olson 2023: .838
THE CURIOUS CASE OF MARCELL OZUNA
The Rise and Fall and Rise Again of Atlanta’s Designated Hitter
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — "I’m Ozuna from the Braves."
Those words, captured from police body cam footage during a 4:30 a.m. traffic stop between home games in August of last year,
As Orlando Arcia continues to look like a good starting shortstop for a championship caliber team, keep in mind …
The Braves just signed him to a 4-year, $8.3 mill deal.
Wow.
How the Braves Win with Moneyball
(Mini-column)
When you hear the term “Moneyball,” you may reflexively imagine Jonah Hill repeating the words, “because he gets on base” on cue like a life sized Tickle-Me-Elmo every time Brad Pitt points to him.
But as I recently heard an MLB
The Braves gave up all of that to get Sean Murphy??!
The Braves are giving the starting SS job to Olrando Arcia??!
The Braves haven't released Ozuna yet??!
Alex Anthopoulos:
Terry Francona said he started "getting nauseous” looking at ATL's lineup. Francona: “My goodness. Not even the guys on their lineup but the guys on their bench. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen numbers like that. Maybe I have but golly. Those OPSes are stupid [good].”
UPDATED Acuña projected totals:
.329, 39 HR, 95 RBI, 63 SB
10.6 bWAR
That would make him the first 30/60 player in MLB history (30+HR, 60+ SB).
Also on pace for 155 runs. It's been 93 years since anyone scored 155 times in a season.
This is stunning:
Arcia has 2.5 bWAR in 50 games. That ties him w/ Goldschmidt who's played 19 more games.
Obviously, scaled to 150 games: 7.5 WAR.
Last year, Machado was 5th in MLB with 6.8 bWAR.
I'm not predicting Arcia will keep up THIS pace all year. But still ... wow.
Soroka in 3 AAA rehab starts this year:
13.3 innings
11 H, 4 BB, 13 SO, 1.32 ERA
And stuff and velo have been at 2019 levels. He’s still just 25.
#Braves
Acuña update: He is currently on pace for ...
.331, 33 HR, 88 RBI
143 R, 72 SB, 9.4 bWAR
That would make him MLB's first ever 30/70 player (30+ HR, 70+ SB).
Only two members of the 30/50 club. No 30/60 members.
#Braves
If reports are true, I cannot believe the
@Braves
are parting ways with Kelsey Wingert.
If true, that is the single worst broadcasting decision surrounding this team that I can possible recall.
Truly inexplicable.

Eddie Rosario has hit 9 HR in his last 27 games.
And he's OPS-ing over 1.000 in June.
He's now on pace for almost 30 HR.
Some fans were still ragging on him as recently as a few days ago.
Further perspective on how good Acuña has been so far: He's on pace for an 11.2 bWAR.
Here's a complete list of 11.2+ bWAR pos players in past century:
*Bonds 2001-2002
Ripken 1991
Yastrzemski 1967
Mays 1965
Mantle 1956-1957
Musial 1948
Ruth 1926
FUN FACT: Matt Olson's 2023 looks like this...
.281, 53 HR, 133 RBI, .994 OPS
He is now the single season franchise leader in HR and RBI -- over the likes of Hank Aaron and Chipper Jones.
And he isn't even the best hitter on his team.
#Braves
Bryce Elder has now made 15 starts in the big leagues. That's roughly a half-season worth of starts.
His numbers as big league starter in 87.2 innings ...
67 H, 32 BB, 79 SO ... 2.36 ERA
#Braves
How bout the start Ozzie's off to?
On pace for ...
.272, 46 HR, 132 RBI, .904 OPS
Surprisingly, zero SB so far. Not even an official attempt yet. Still, that's a crazy start to the season for baseball's most lovable player.
#Braves
The
#Braves
are now 11 games up on the Phillies and 10 games up on the Marlins in the loss column.
They're 5 games up in the loss column on Tampa Bay for MLB's best record.
The Braves built The Battery and now every pro sports franchise in America wants to replicate it.
Alex Anthopoulos started locking up players very early to long-term deals, and now GMs across the league are trying to duplicate his success.
Model franchise.
It's entirely reasonable to expect some ups and downs for a little while as Soroka continues to dial it in.
But he's fully healthy and stuff is at 2019 levels. He's still just 25 YO.
And in case you forgot ... 2019:
13-4, 2.68 ERA, 5.7 WAR (6th CY voting)
Profitable day for the Braves. The good guys won. Everyone else in the NL East lost. Atlanta's division lead grows.
ATL --
MIA 5.5
PHI 9.0
NYM 13
WSH 19.5
Tomorrow's game will officially be the 1/3 mark of the season. Here are a few updated projections:
Acuña: .333 (.415 OBP), 34 HR, 92 RBI, 146 R, 66 SB
Olson: .236 (.360 OBP), 49 HR, 125 RBI
Murphy: .290, (.403 OBP), 34 HR, 113 RBI
Ozuna: 34 HR
Riley: 31 HR
Albies: 31 HR
Current projected HR totals:
Albies: 44
Murphy: 44
Olson: 44
Acuña: 30
Riley: 25
I highly doubt Albies, Murphy, Olson all actually hit 40+. But 30+?, sure.
The HR pace for Acuña, Riley will likely pick up.
Given health, likely FIVE 30+ HR hitters in
#Braves
lineup this yr.
Orlando Arcia has quietly been a top-5 MLB shortstop so far this year. (By bWAR/games played)
He has been more valuable to this point than Lindor.
Arcia earns $2.3m this year and $2m each of the next two years.
Lindor is making $32m a season.
G'afternoon Braves Country!
Here are Matt Olson's current projected stats:
.273, 60 HR, 148 RBI ... 1.003 OPS
He earns $21 mill this year. Roughly the same amount the Mets are paying Sterling Marte.
Olson is under contract through 2029 at $22/year. 2030 club option at
Chipper is convinced that Freddie wanted to return to ATL and believed that would happen right up until he got the Matt Olson news.
FF listened to his agent who played hard ball a bit too long. He made AA believe FF was prepared to walk away.
Sadly mishandled.
Braves Twitter earlier this year:
Why did AA make a trade for Murphy and give up so much when it wasn't even a position of need?!
Why did they give the SS job to Arcia?!
Braves Twitter now:
The Braves have three players currently pace for 40 HR.
And neither of them are Ronald Acuña or Austin Riley, who we know are going to stack up the longballs as the season goes along.
Good chance that 5 Braves hit 30+ HR this season.
Vs LHP, Kevin Pillar:
.340, .975 OPS. 4 HR in 53 AB.
Harris has returned to '22 ROY form.
Ozuna looks like 2020 Ozuna again.
There is NO PLACE in this lineup for an opposing pitching to catch his breath. It's relentless, 1-9 can kill you.
I hate to say anything negative amid such a great season to this point, but with last night’s loss the Braves are now 0-28 in games in which their opponent outscores them.
Combined, Acuña, Albies, Muprhy, Arcia have produced a 7.2 bWAR so far this year.
In TOTAL (all four), they'll earn $30.3 million.
The Mets are paying Lindor $32 million. 1.4 WAR thus far.

It's been a grind for the Braves so far, fighting through injuries, including to two starting pitchers out.
And yet, they're an NL-best 31-19, 5.5 games up in the East.

For the record, MLB is on pace for about 3,500 steals.
There were more than 3,400 as recently as 1999. In 1987, there were 3,585 steals league-wide.
Changes have simply restored the speed game, brining the SB back to prominence.
#Braves
The Braves are now an MLB-best 75-32 since June 1.
Again, national media keeps talking about how no one wants to face the Dodgers. The Braves are every bit as scary.
Raise a hand if you're old enough to remember when the Braves were terrible for more than a couple seasons in a row.
“Like lambs to the slaughter, the Braves take the field.”

@BravesOnTBS
Acuña 40/40 watch:
Acuña's currently on pace for 26 HR and 80+ SB. He'd have to pick up HR pace and very well could.
But hang on a sec ... How many players have hit 30 HR and stolen 60+ bases?
Zero.
He could become ONLY member of 30/60 or even 30/80 club.
#Braves
Freddie didn't die.
He turned down a fair offer from the Braves and ultimately wound up signing a VERY comparable offer with the Braves top rival.
Use the locker.
In less than two hours the
#KeepKelsey
petition has more than 1,000 signatures.
I have no doubt whatsoever that we'll have tens of thousand of signatures.
Please continue to share, and let's let the
@Braves
know how we feel here.

The Braves could throw high and tight to send a message. But personally, I’d love to see the entire Braves team take BP today in t-shirts that say “throw it again.”
Ronald Acuña Jr is on the cusp of making history.
One more HR, and he will be the ONLY member of the 30/60 club.
He’ll be the only player in MLB history to hit at least 30 homeruns in steal at least 60 bases in a single season .
#Braves
Oh, and the Phillies lost.
If the Mets lose, the Braves will gain a game on everyone in the East except the Nats.
Braves would be 7 games up on MIA.
11 games up on PHI.
18 — yes EIGHTEEN — games up on NYM.
