Broadcaster for more years than I can count, Afternoon drive, 1010xl radio in Jacksonville and honored to be the play-by-play voice of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
My heart is heavy today. God called home the nicest person I’ve ever known - my sweet Mom. I was her only child. From age 14, she was my only parent. I am so incredibly blessed to be this magnificent woman’s son. Rest in Christ’s peace, Rose Patti Frangie.
I’ve been in the media since 1981. I’m not sure I’ve covered a more standup guy than Blake Bortles. Never ducked an interview, never made excuses, never chippy, never blamed others. Took criticism like a man. Best wishes to a genuinely good guy.
Consider this: that Auburn defense played every team in the SEC West, played Clemson, played Georgia twice, and never allowed a team to get to 30 points. Clemson, Bama & Georgia first time scored 14, 14, 17. UCF just hung 34 & missed 2 chip shot FGs.
Obviously, FSU has far more 5-Star recruits than UF. And far more 4-Star recruits than UF. And a returning QB who was really good two years ago under Jimbo. ... And the Gators took the Noles to the woodshed on FSU’s field. That HAS to be coaching.
Dameon Pierce last night - 27 rushes for 139 yards against best team in the NFL.
His 678 rushing yds are 4th in NFL - behind Nick Chubb, Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry.
Last year at UF, he never started a game, averaged 7 carries per game.
Enjoy your day.
Doug Pederson inherited team w back-to-back 1st overall picks - meaning worst team in NFL 2 years running.
In one year, took them to a division title, a playoff win, was one of last 8 standing.
Of course he should have been coach of the year.
That is all.
Quick thoughts:
* Unlike Utah game, UF looked really well-coached. Good game plans, play-calling, discipline.
* Defense is legit. Big, fast, deep, well-coached by Armstrong. Best D in long time.
* Trevor Etienne. Wow.
* Mertz is pretty dang good. …
Some of my proudest moments are walking into a broadcast booth with that Jaguars logo on my chest. Calling these games is the greatest honor of my career. If a guy doesn’t want to be on this team, doesn’t want to wear that logo any more, then good riddance.
So who was better tonight? Jones or Trask?
Jones: 418 yds, 5 TDs, 1 int
Trask: 408 yds, 4 TDs (1 rush) 0 int
Jones had few more yards, 1 more TD & won.
But Trask did it against better defense & without threat of running game.
No wrong answer. That close.
The Jags are really freaking good. Skilled, tough, well-coached. Damn they’re good.
And Jags fans who showed up in Pittsburgh in droves are damn good, too. I saw so many. What a turnout.
I love this stuff. Let’s go.
Today stings.
But the journey has been amazing. What a ride. And the future is so bright it is practically blinding.
Thank you, Jags, for where you’ve taken us this year. And for where we’re all headed together.
Can’t wait for the next chapter.
Cheers.
UF freshman pitcher Carsten Finnvold just threw 9 innings, never threw a pitch over 81 mph, lived mostly in the 70s, didn’t walk a batter, didn’t strike out many, and totally dominated red hot Oklahoma team.
A guy who knows how to pitch. What a joy to watch.
Florida blows out S. Carolina 38-6. Gamecocks only points on fake punt. Gator defense shuts them out.
In two following weeks:
* S. Carolina scores 94 pts in beating beats top 10 teams Tenn. & Clemson.
* UF allows 76 pts in losses to Vandy & FSU.
Sports.
Final UF thought: other than natty year, maybe Sully’s best coaching job.
Lost Langford, Rivera, Riopelle, Halter, Sproat, Waldrep. Then Evans, Slater get hurt. That’s 8 guys who led team to CWS top 2.
With all gone, still made CWS top 3.
Pretty dang good.
I think SEC/ACC/Big 12 players now will be safer from COVID than Big 10/PAC 12.
Why? Because they will:
1) Be tested more
2) Be monitored more closely
3) Have curfews
4) Be less likely to go to bars/parties because they have a game
5) Be more accountable
Guts. That’s my take. Tons of storylines - Minshew, Fournette, Lambo, Harrison’s pick. Others. We’ll talk about em all. But for now - I’ll take a team that just was too freaking gutsy to lose. Damn that was good. Man I’m jacked.
Gigantic win for Gators.
Doesn’t matter that S. Carolina is 2-4. Doesn’t matter that UF’s defense wasn’t very good.
You have to walk before you run. Had to win. On the road. Somehow.
5-2. 3-1 in SEC.
Really big win.
Woke up with a final thought: Jags fans are awesome.
From Tony’s trip to Canton, to going to home & away games to those cheering from home, you are the greatest fan base.
I’ve never seen SO much Jags gear.
Thanks for listening, watching, caring.
You rock.
I preferred Sunday because that’s what Jags preferred.
But can you imagine scene this week? On a Saturday night? At the Bank? In THIS town? For the division? Vs. the Titans?
Think jam-packed incredibly loud rock and roll sports fest. Times 10!
Let’s go!
Man it feels like the whole city is smiling, doesn’t it?
After so many tough years, this loyal, loyal Jags fan base is grinning ear to ear. As they should be. They deserve this.
Urban. Trevor. ... Go knock one back, Jags fan. You earned it.
Let’s go.
Watching baseball with my sweet mom, and she just sang every word of the national anthem while singing along with the TV. Every freaking word. Sorry, Alzheimer’s, you can’t take that away. It was freaking awesome.
Primary postgame thought: Man, is Dan Mullen good. Sheesh is he good.
Alex Smith, Chris Leak, Tim Tebow, Dak Prescott. Then Feleipe Franks (9 TD-8 INT before Mullen, 24-6 w him).
Now Trask, who hadn’t started a game since 9th grade. How good is he now? Wow.
I truly didn’t care who won the Vikings-Saints game. I didn’t care who won last year’s Patriots-Chiefs game. But the NFL OT plan is one of the worst in all of sports. Both offenses HAVE to get a chance. Really bad rule.
All in all thought Gators played about as well as they could. LSU clearly had better team, way better trenches, was at home, UF lost both DEs, yet were right there. Really battled. Mullen overthought it a few times, but called very good game. LSU just better.
Thoughts:
* Great win because I believe Utah is very good.
* AR. Enough said. Wow.
* Trevor Etienne. Wow. Montrell Johnson, too.
* UF still lacks dudes on defense, but this staff has em playing like hair is on fire.
* UF very well-coached. Great win.
In Jags’ history, I’m not sure there’s been a more anticipated player debut than Nick Foles. That’s why that figurative punch to our guts feels so real. Minshew looked very good, defense will bounce back, the sky isn’t falling. But man it just feels cruel.
THAT … was a great win.
8-3. Seven of last eight. Two-game lead in division.
What a battle of terrific young quarterbacks.
Is Josh Allen any good?
Man I’m still buzzing. So much fun to call.
Let’s freaking go!
What a terrific year for FSU. Coach and QB doubted by everyone before season. Hot seat and all that.
Won 10 games. Has virtually everyone of note coming back. Will be ranked very high with Heisman contender to start next season.
Tip of the cap. Well done.
Minshew wasn’t perfect, fumbled too much, I know. But man with that guy you’re always in the game. Always. What a blast watching him play, calling these games he’s in, etc. Just a blast. This one stung, but that dude is gonna hang a bunch of Ws. Just sayin.
I wanted Jags to bring in receivers who have caught tons of passes. Don’t care about size or 40 times, just are they GOOD AT FOOTBALL?
Kirk, Engram, Jones have combined in NFL for 669 catches, 7618 Yds, 44 TDs.
All are 27 or younger.
THAT is tremendous.
Random thought of the night:
I get this hunch Billy Napier is going to be really good. Really, really good.
I know, I’m a homer. Always have been. But that is what I think.
Have a good night.
Lost my mom exactly 5 years ago today. Hard to believe it’s been that long.
Nobody influenced my life more. She always said this one thing: Be nice to people. You can’t imagine how many times I heard her say that.
Always be nice to people.
Man I had a great mom.
These guys are good. Really good. That’s the storyline.
It’s a hard damn league. And they’re 5-2. Five and two.
Four in a row. And counting.
Let’s freaking go!
College football — what a job by Mike Norvell with the Noles. Inherited a mess, a program without great funding, players bailing and fans giving up hope, and in three years has them undefeated through four games and ranked in the AP poll. THAT is coaching. …
Today begins my 10th season calling
@Jaguars
games. Calling games of my hometown team remains the greatest honor of my career. I’m humbled and grateful. More than ever.
There’s only one way to kick it off.
It’s VFTB!
Let’s go.
Are you kidding me???? They had the ball at their own 31 with 1:04 to play in a tie game and they played for overtime?
I’ve NEVER seen that! What in the world?
Not in much of a mood to tweet. But tip of the cap to a young Jags team that played their tails off. And to a patient, magnificent fan base that so answered the bell for this team. Duval, you rock. You were great. Proud of this team. Proud of its fans.
A 21-point win. On the road. In the SEC. Offense scores 38. QB goes 26-for-35 for 383 yards and 3 TDs with 0 ints. Backup throws another TD.
And somehow it felt underwhelming.
I suppose that is a sign your team is pretty good.
We lost David Lamm today, a very sad day.
We worked together 3 places, traveled together, laughed together. He hired me. Man did he help me.
Jay Solomon, David, Greg Larson were our sports radio pioneers. I was the tag along in this story years ago.
Rest easy, Uncle Dave.
Random note to those patient, awesome Jags fans:
Cardinals, Bills, Bengals & Chargers did not have good teams. Then they drafted good, strong-armed, smart, athletic, tough QBs.
Now, suddenly, they all have very good teams.
It’s coming.
Have a good day.
I think I lost my mind. But man was that one fun to call.
Thank you, Jags. Thank you, Trevor.
And kudos to those digital folks to get this turned around so fast.
What a day. What a freaking day.
Graham Mertz
Today: 30-of-48, 423 yds, 3 TDs, 0 int. Two 4th quarter TD drives after trailing by 10.
Season: 1,897 yds (271 yds per game), 76%, 12 TDs, 2 int. Both ints hit receivers in hands first.
5-2 record w young team & leaky o-line.
Convinced yet?
Kyle Trask is having greatest QB season in UF history.
* Spurrier, Wuerffel, Tebow won Heismans. Grossman should’ve.
* Matthews (twice), Bell were SEC POY.
* Leak is leading passer in UF history.
Trask’s year is better than all of em. Think about that.
Michigan, like many teams, had NFL-hopeful guys sit out bowl to avoid injury. Business decisions. Protecting dollars. I totally get it. But how much money did Chauncey Gardner-Johnson MAKE by playing? Huge game had to help his draft position. Just wondering.
Shows what I know. Very surprised.
For FSU, man.
Scheduled 2 SEC blue bloods, beat both. Won at Clemson and in the Swamp. Won every game. Won ACC game. Went 13-0.
And two one-loss teams made it in & they didn’t.
What else were they supposed to do?
Wow.
A very young man in our neighborhood has chosen to defend our country and leaves to join the Navy tomorrow. Since there can’t be a going away party, the neighbors organized a car parade in front of his home to say goodbye. And thank you. People are good.
Before I left for game, my wife - and dog - pulled out her $20 radio she uses to listen to the game.
Never watches on TV. Thinks it will mess up the mojo. Insists if she never turns it off, never changes routine, good things eventually will happen.
Well …
Honestly, I just keep thinking about the scene at the bank Saturday night.
My advice to you all: rest up this week, sleep in, head down early … and then let it rip!
This will be Monster Jam meets Florida-Georgia! On steroids!
Can’t wait! Let’s go!
UF post-game thread. Lots of thoughts:
* First, Napier isn’t getting fired, nor should he. Believe he’s building very good roster that will make games like this less likely.
His eye for talent and ability to attract it is legit. We’ve already seen that. …
I have no idea why she agreed to marry some goofball 28 years ago today, but really glad she did. I also know this:
1. She’s as beautiful today as she was then.
2. I used to have way more hair.
Happy Anniversary to my beautiful wife Susanne.
What a terrific win. A little hoarse and so worth it. And so freaking happy for Blake. So criticized, but never complained. Never ducked an interview. Never blamed others. Today had his best game on so many levels. Against best QB ever. THAT is awesome.
The Jags might just be pretty damn good. I know they lost, I know it’s early. We’ll see.
But I’ve called a bunch of Titans-Jags games played in Nashville. The Titans usually hit em the mouth. Today the Jags hit em back.
I really like this group.
Tip of the cap to Jags fans. As tough as this season has been, that was a another dang good crowd today. Yes, there were lots of Redskins fans. But Jags fans showed, did their part. Take a bow Jags fan. You’ve been through a lot. You are a damn good fan base.
That’s freaking awesome! Bo is in. Hallelujah. Fantastic!
Great player. Better guy. Great representative of this team. And this city.
Big congrats to Tony Boselli.
Emory vs. AR has been talker all year. That an angst against Grantham has dominated conversation about UF.
But how the wasting of senior Dameon Pierce has avoided media & fans astounds me. In a year when you HAVE to run it.
Man, the year he could have had.
My take: the Jacksonville Jaguars are pretty damn good.
That was just tremendous. Last night in London. Might have a few pints. Just sayin.
Let’s freaking go!
Really fun birthday steak dinner in London.
My wife set it up - friends from Jax and our
@jaguars
broadcast team, including honorary member
@AsherGrodman
.
Appreciate everyone coming to hang out with the old guy. Truly special group of folks.
Great night out.
For me, this will go down as one of the biggest mysteries of Florida football in all my years following.
Might have been the best back in the country and got 7 or 8 carries per game.
Screamed it into the mic so often on our show. Will never understand it.
UF is very good. Not sure they’re great; we’ll find that out soon enough.
But, man, I could watch Trask and Pitts and Toney play every day.
It’s Shane to Kirkpatrick, Danny to Ike & Reidel, Rex to Jabar & Reche.
Enjoy it. It doesn’t come around often.
Honestly, I don’t blame Emory Jones. The kid is trying, doing the best he can.
But if the University of Florida football program - with 85 scholarships to give and 4 QBs on one - keeps running him out there - it deserves to get smoked by UCF.
UF program is broken. Thread:
* 2-8 last 10 vs Power 5.
* 2-5 in SEC.
* Most embarrassing loss in years.
* Poor QB play, curious personnel decisions. Offense, defense awful.
* Coach stubborn, chippy. Recruits decommitting. Fans are furious. …
Here is a fact:
You get to Super Bowls with quarterbacks like Mahomes, Burrow, Hurts. Period. That’s how you do it.
Another fact: we’ve got one here in Jacksonville that’s pretty freaking close. Pretty dang close.
Around here, it’s just starting.
Cheers.
3 yrs ago, I emceed event where Bobby spoke. As thanks, they gave me a folio he signed.
He jokingly said with that wonderful grin & drawl, “sure you want this, Frank, I know you’re a Gator?”
I’ve used it every day since.
RIP to a wonderful Christian man.
I thought this was pretty cool.
Tennessee’s Uros Plavsic inadvertently injured Florida’s Jason Jitoboh’s eye last year. Was gruesome - Jitoboh underwent numerous surgeries, thought he might lose the eye, never play again.
This was their post-game embrace tonight. Good stuff.
I was really critical of Napier’s play-calling earlier this year. But in fairness ever since losing to Kentucky in Sept., UF’s point totals have been:
38
41
20
36
35
31
The 20 came against Georgia. North of 30 every other game.
FWIW
Just got home from stadium. Despite tough year, that was a damn good, loud crowd. Jags fans, you rock.
Man was THAT one fun to call.
Minshew was great. And Calais, about as good a person/player ever to come around here, got a TD.
How. Good. Was. That.
Thoughts:
• Rookie class is very good. Henderson, Chaisson, Shenault, Johnson, Robinson, Hamilton, Claybrooks all contributed.
• Minshew really knows how to play.
• Team has a toughness, grittiness to it. Product of good, close locker room.
Fun bunch
Morning advice to UF fans: Take time to enjoy this guard combination of Zyon Pullin and Walter Clayton Jr. Pairs like this don’t come along often.
Cross & Brown. Taurean & Lee H. Wilbekin & Frazier. Gators have had a few.
But these two. Man, just so good.
I’ve defended Grantham. Other than last year, defenses were fine. But this hard to defend.
LSU, bad rushing team, found ONE play - line up TE inside tackle, pull the guard - and UF never adjusted. No run blitzes, stacked lines, nothing.
Hard to understand.
Great crowd today.
Left game, picked up the wife, met friends at burger restaurant at the beach. Then watched.
Place started filling up. Jags fans from game. In a blink, was packed w Jags fans. At the beach!
City has Jags fever. And it’s just awesome.
I know it’s been a tough year and it was only one game.
But man I was happy for Jags fans today. Haven’t seen that many post-game smiles leaving the stadium in a long time.
Take a bow and knock one back Jags fan. You earned it. You’re a great fan base.
Overwhelmingly impressed by the loyalty and spirit of the
@BoldCityBrigade
. What a bash in Kansas City. Really enjoyed meeting so many of you.
Tip of the cap to
@BoldCityCap
and all involved. You guys rock.
Go Jags!
My friend
@TonyBoselli
should be in the Hall of Fame by the time darkness falls tonight. He was a great, great player. He also is an all-world good guy who represents this city and franchise with dignity without fail. I’ll be proud when it happens.
What a postseason run by UF. Barely made the field then went on a ride for the ages.
Big wins, small wins, walk offs. Incredible drama.
Sorry it ended. But thanks to those gutsy Gators for a spectacular journey. What a fun few weeks!
Well done, fellas!
Rooting hard for Napier. But can’t keep losing good players.
Ty’ron Hopper
Antuan Ryland-Powell
Donovan McMillon
Mike Tarquin
Josh Braun
Ethan White
Xzavier Henderson
Princely Umanielen
Caleb Douglas
Trevor Etienne
Chris McClellan
Will Norman
That’s a lot…
Saying Ohio State has more good wins than Bama is a bad argument because Bama had no control over that. But Ohio State COULD have controlled not losing by 31 to an average team.
Today is the first birthday my sweet mom will spend in Heaven. She would have been 89. Guessing later today she will be making lasagna for the angels and making sure the Gator game is on. Happy Birthday, Mom. Love you.
The Gators are defending champs, have been to Omaha four straight seasons, have been to the Final Four three of the last four seasons. Digest that for a moment. What a program. And not letting up.
