I wrote this song in 2019 inspired by my trip to Palestine. There is so much to say about that trip but at the root of our shared experiences I learned we must find ways to maintain hope even in the face of ongoing genocide & war which led me to write the lyrics in Lakota
When johnny cash released his bitter tears album (an album about native issues and stories) he toured reservations and when he performed at an old basketball gym on our rez my mom was a child and jingle dress danced for him
I was in Palestine shortly after Palestinian prisoners went on a hunger strike to protest their genocide & Pizza Hut created an Israel only ad which showed them wafting the smell of their pizzas into the prison while the prisoners were on hunger strike to mock them
When I was in Palestine we visited the Tamimi family at their home and heard their stories first hand. One of the things that messed me up so bad during the 11 days I spent in Palestine was being witness to the blatant violence against unarmed women & children by the IDF DAILY
Ahed Tamimi, who was locked up at 16 for slapping an Israeli soldier, was reportedly detained overnight.
Listen to her speak in 2022 about the 12,000 Palestinian children Israel has imprisoned since 2000.
You know how Harvard’s Peabody museum announced that they have hair samples taken from native children in collections? Well I was at Harvard for an artist residency at their ArtLab a month before they announced that and found out my great grandmother’s hair in that collection
Americans will watch avatar and feel empathy for the na’vi blue space indians and will leave the theater still harboring hate for actual native americans 😭
When I was in Palestine we visited a Palestinian refugee camp. My western American mind was expecting an encampment of tents but instead found a community that looked & felt eerily similar to reservations in the US
I often think about how major labels have surprised native music and stories throughout time from banning Link Wray’s song “rumble” which didn’t even have lyrics to Johnny cash’s label refusing to promote the record and it was during one of the peaks of his career
There’s never “two sides” when it comes to genocide. When you understand the history of how settler colonialism has impacted nations and land you understand there’s a hard line when it comes to genocide and you’re either on the right or wrong side of that line and history
I still think about that time someone sent their dog’s dna into a dna testing company as an experiment and the test came back saying the dog was 20% native
The hair samples were taken from my grandmother while she was in boarding school. Thankfully I was able to see hers and pray with it. The timing of it all was intense and interesting
The native lady who told me is the one going through all the samples and she was relieved because she found two of her grandparents hair in the collection and I was the first person she spoke to who also had a relative’s hair in that collection. We cried together
One time a white tweeted me saying Natives can’t make films about ourselves because the films are biased. They said only non Natives can make unbiased films about Native people 🤔🙃
I’m grateful to the native staff at Harvard who worked with me and responded when they seen someone in the collection had the same last name as me. They made sure to inform me while I was on campus for a residency unrelated to this. I knew who it was when they told me the name
This native heritage month is reminding me of that one year when an oil corporation sprayed NDNs with water canons in below freezing temps for trying to stop them from building an a illegal pipeline through the Standing Rock Rez the night before everyone celebrated thanksgiving
I honestly haven’t processed it all because it happened while I was on tour and I had a lot going on so I wasn’t able to take the time I needed to process
Frequently I encounter non Native folks who tell me they think reservations are some form of reparations to Natives from the US government. I even had someone close to me tell me they thought reservations were places to “reserve” our cultures
James Cameron called the Lakota nation a “hopeless” and “dead end society”
Besides that statement being a blatant lie he was actually talking about his films post ‘97. All hopeless dead ends and now he’s dying at the final dead end
I heard western science finally caught up to the fact that plains natives have connections to horses that are older than America. Spaniards sure as hell didn’t bring them here when we have stories about plains horse culture that predate colonial contact on this continent
USA: systemically & historically erases Indigenous people & Indigenous voices from media
*racist event happens involving Indigenous people. USA has chance to amplify Indigenous voices in media
USA:
Poor housing, limited to no resources, colonial laws stacked against them, settlers stealing & profiting off all their natural resources. The kids I met at the refugee camp reminded me of rez kids so much I felt at home
White people when they tour the Rez with a non profit org and wonder why everyone’s staring at them while they view the destruction of their colonialism
I’m super excited to announce that this summer I started working one of the most unique projects of my life. I am working with the Field Museum in Chicago to design a space in the new Native American Exhibit Hall debuting in 2021!
I started out making beats on my laptop and building a home recording studio in my cousins basement on the Rosebud Rez in South Dakota. Tonight I get to share that story and my process at the Apple Store in downtown Chicago
TW: western hospitals/medicine
On Fri I had a bad seizure & 911 had to be called. Last yr I almost drowned so I have hella PTSD about suffocating. When they brought me into the hospital I freaked out when I came to cuz I had a tube down my throat & felt like I was suffocating
This type of sick shit is a testament to the way native people are dehumanized by colonization and native genocide is glorified by the people who founded and run this country. This makes me sick but I’m not surprised
Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!
I just released a new song and music video created by youth on the Pine Ridge Rez. Read about here in

Help us share it with the world!
As a Lakota lakotaman1 does not represent me or the Lakota nation. He represents that small faction of weird/messed up uncles who pander to settlers, wear sunglasses 24/7 and bring white women to Sundance
On Sunday, a Nebraska farmer signed a deed returning ancestral tribal land back to the Ponca Tribe — sacred land that lies on the historic Ponca “Trail of Tears.”
Lakotas used controlled burns to literally engineer a sprawling grassland where the Buffalo could thrive since we needed them to survive. It’s now known as the Great Plains. Our ancestors were scientists because they had to be in order to live in balance with our environment
In 2017 I went to Palestine as a member of an artist delegation organized by
@Dreamdefenders
. What I witnessed was settler colonialism and genocide happening in way that mirrored what I know about how the US government enacted genocide on my people
So plz educate the ppl you love and care abt because everyone in the USA is living in an illegal settler colony, Indigenous ppl survived their genocide & we’re here to say these settlers never gave af abt us & never will
This is me recording my flute songs through a 50+ yard underground culvert on my rez aka the wildest natural echo chamber you’ve ever heard because I’m crazy will always find ways to combine my love of audio, natural spaces and creativity into one idea
Where I’m from (South Dakota) reservations were concentration camps where they sent us to die after they stole and colonized all of the land every US citizen occupies.
Dying and crying at the “native” deodorant brand commercial I just witnessed with the slogan “it’s not a myth. It’s native” because that means people thinking natives are mythical or not real is so ingrained into American culture they use that idea to sell deodorant now
The origins of the Lakota word for star mean “human flesh”
In 2019 NASA finally “discovered” that human bodies are made from the same particles found in stars. Western science is always catching up to what our ancestors already knew
The doctors marked me with combative disorder, strapped me down & took about 7 men to hold me down. The docs also said my Sundance ceremony scars were self mutilation & used that & my history of seeing a psychologist to try to send me to the psych ward
The doctors also straight up assumed I was high on PCP or some other hard drugs when I came in until my blood tests came back negative. Even when my relatives were telling them otherwise and trying to explain my reactions the whole time
The person in charge of patient experience for the whole institution just talked to me because of they’ve been hearing about how they treated me from you all. The damage is done but hopefully Natives will get treated better at this hospital after this. TY all for the support
If we didn’t get permission from the white settler agent we couldn’t eat, fix our homes or visit relatives because we would be violating US law & could be arrested. Also our cultures & ceremonies were illegal under US law until the Indian Religious Freedom Act in 1978
When we were in Palestine the group of artists I was with asked every person we met what we could do to help them as US artists and they all said the same thing: to share their story with the world because there’s so much propaganda
So keep sharing their story with the world 🇵🇸
Reminds me of how in 2019 NASA finally “discovered” that human bodies are made from the same particles we see in stars yet the origins of the Lakota word for star literally mean “human flesh”. Natives were scientists before they even considered us human beings
I heard western science finally caught up to the fact that plains natives have connections to horses that are older than America. Spaniards sure as hell didn’t bring them here when we have stories about plains horse culture that predate colonial contact on this continent
My conspiracy theory is that lakotaman is a fed programmed settler soothing bot that gained sentience somewhere along the way & went rogue. After it blocked all the native people on Twitter (HOW?!) it has grown to a level where it can’t be stopped or contained by mere ndns alone
I really love videos that show how music and sound cause vibrations and waves in physical space and elements. I know I’m obviously biased but music is so powerful. Watch this and imagine our bodies are around 80% water and you can start to see how music effects us in so many ways
I graduated valedictorian of my high school & didn’t have high enough test scores to apply to Ivy League schools. Now I get paid to perform my music & speak at Ivy League schools & beyond. I tell Native kids to never let colonial standards define our intelligence or self worth
I was born into an average “Native American IQ” family. You put me in an off-the-reservation public school & I graduated as the salutatorian. I was accepted to Stanford & graduated with an engineering degree. Give us equal opportunities & we will show you what “IQ” we are capable
In the early SD Rez days our ppl had to get permission from district agents (white settler men) to get food, fix our homes, or even leave our community to travel to another community on our Rez to visit relatives. We couldn’t hunt cuz they killed millions of our buffalo
My new flute album Olówaŋ Wétu (Spring Songs) is available on all music streaming platforms. This is a collection of original flute songs I recorded outdoors in places and spaces that are important to me. The album also includes me sharing the stories of why I wrote each song
BREAKING: lakotaman is not in fact Lakota and has been revealed to be a descendant of the Navi tribe and was the inspiration for james camerons avatar series
I was having a hard time remembering some of my own songs due to the short term memory loss. I’m still gaining my memory & weight back. Playing music is helping me come back and reconnect the mental & emotional dots
This is a new song I’m writing
Apparently some right wing “voice/commentator” with millions of followers named matt walsh mentioned me & put a target on me in one of his videos because the comments of all my videos are flooded with his racist white man army telling me so 😂
I just saw this and it was like watching horror. Big violation of cultural protocols
As a Lakota musician and performer I NEVER share ceremony songs or certain aspects of culture that are meant only for us. Especially since it was illegal for us to sing these songs until 1978
There’s a recording of a sacred Lakota song arranged for choir going around Facebook & folks are horrified. In an effort to increase rep of Native voices, a composer (of possible Lakota heritage) has stepped the line. We listen to the community first & let them call in their own.
Thinking about Palestine, the land I visited and the Palestinian relatives who have families impacted by a colonialism and genocide which felt all too familiar. This was from a 2017 artist delegation to Palestine with
@Dreamdefenders
which changed my life
