Sheffield Forgemasters has submitted a planning application for a landmark machining facility on brownfield land in #Sheffield’s Meadowhall district. Located on a 16-acre plot at Weedon Street, the new facility will form one of the World’s most advanced large #machining facilities, to support the company’s manufacture for the #UKDefence programme. The building will cover a space equal to 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools and will contain 17 industry-leading machines, including some of the largest and most advanced five-axis Vertical Turning Lathes ever produced. Industry Minister Sarah Jones has hosted a roundtable to finalise the Government’s upcoming Steel Strategy at Sheffield Forgemasters. The Minister also took a tour of Sheffield Forgemasters’ facilities, allowing the firm to showcase its capabilities and investments, which includes £900 million of upgrades to plant and equipment which will service UK defence and green energy projects, such as SMR nuclear power. As we move at pace into 2025, we can share the latest update on our new Forge development, where piling work for the foundations nears 70 per cent completion. This aerial video shows the transformation of our Brightside Lane site since work began in 2022, with demolition of former buildings and the progress made by our delivery partner VINCI Building UK to prepare the ground and fix concrete piles for our new 13,000-tonne Forging Line. The forging line will be complemented by a new machining facility, which will house 21 of the world’s most advanced, heavy-duty machine tools, for the manufacture of complex forgings and castings for defence and civil nuclear applications. With our on-going apprenticeships programme, training the next generation of a nuclear skills task force for the UK, and our heavy investment in plant to underpin the UK defence supply chain, the future is looking very bright on Brightside Lane!
