At this point I have NO faith in USAID as an entity, period. There are probably effective programs that have been taking place under the USAID that might be “rescued” to the State Department. And that’s a good debate to have. But the SS USAID is like the SS Titanic. The tear across her side is too long and she will founder.

We are “so lucky” in California to have an Attorney General like @AGRobBonta. His newsletter came out. And it’s all about lawfare against Trump and warning LA Children’s Hospital and he will basically come after them if they don’t continue performing sex change operations on children. There’s actually nothing in the newsletter about fighting actual criminals. Violent crime is up. Retail crime is up. And our top law-enforcement officer is AWOL on what matters.

Fine. If you don’t like these cuts and roll out your own balance federal budget with significant dollars focused on debt retirement. None of the cuts are easy and none of the cuts are fun. OK some of the cuts are fun. But nevertheless, since when is it easy to wake up and realize it’s time to cut up the credit cardsand implement an austerity plan to balance the family budget?

The size of the federal government has grown so much over the last two decades, and everyone is used to the flow of money going to all kinds of things. But we need to understand there hasn’t been remotely enough federal tax income to cover all of this spending (hence a national debt at over $36 trillion and growing). The spending reductions (or massive tax increases if you are into that) needed to balance the budget and start making meaningful progress on debt reductions means that a lot of things have to be cut and reduced, and it’s going to be painful all of the way around. Whether you are a liberal who doesn’t want cuts in social spending, or a conservative who is worried about cuts to law enforcement funding — it’s ALL on the table. Right now is when state and local governments need to figure out what they are going to do with less. Then again, maybe the willpower to make meaningful reductions in federal spending isn’t there, and we’ll just watch interest payments on the debt crowd out all other funding priorities (it’s already more than we pay for the entire national defense budget).

National debt: $36,000,000,000,000 plus plus and growing. We’re going to be doing less research, and a lot less of everything. Because we have to get out of debt. We probably need to have all elected officials binge watching @DaveRamsey 24/7.

Last week, I met with the leadership of @westpoint_USMA, @navalacademy and @af_academy. My message was simple: stick to leadership, standards, excellence, war fighting, and readiness. These are MILITARY ACADEMIES, not civilian universities. I was impressed by the changes already underway and look forward to visiting each institution. Social Justice and DEI are OUT; History, Engineering, and War Studies are IN. We must restore the warrior ethos to the @deptofdefense — and it starts with our future leaders.
