- My substack to raise money for 🇺🇦 Bake for Ukraine ⬇️
Very honoured to have spent time with the courageous volunteers from
@antytila_offic
charity fund as they delivered supplies around Ukraine’s Donetsk region. So much tireless work and meticulous planning goes into these trips - amazing to get such an insight into their work.
I will never be good at selfies but I can celebrate vyshyvanka day with this beautiful shirt I bought in Vsi Svoi - one of my favourite shops in Kyiv 🇺🇦
Ukraine is a magnificent country. Driving through a small village in Odesa region last night, we came across these young people practising a traditional dance. Unbreakable people!
In 1918 a group of young Ukrainian students fought off an offensive by Russian Bolsheviks at the battle of Kruty - today Ukraine remembers that fight - here’s a mural commemorating it near Palats Ukraina metro in Kyiv.
Huge respect and appreciation for everyone working in hospitality at this time of year. It is so full on - there’s a lot of kitchen and FoH staff working like crazy to keep customers happy... good luck to all of you.
If you’re ever in Dnipro I can fully recommend a cafe called Double Decker - they have amazing cakes and when I asked a young staff member the way to the tram stop he put his coat on and walked me there himself!
I can very much recommend the Ukrainian Modernism exhibition that just opened at the
@royalacademy
in London - a really wide range of works, thoughtfully curated
And I couldn’t resist cooking from
@NigelSlater
forthcoming book Greenfeast again! Tonight - hasselback roast Jersey Royals with creamed spinach, almonds and fried garlic. Joy.
I have some Ukrainian friends coming to dinner so I’ve made quiche plus some
@Olia_Hercules
vegetable dishes and a kefir cake from her book Home Food, with rhubarb. Смачного!
I made the
@jamieoliver
tahini pomegranate bundt cake from the new
@CookForSyria
Bake for Syria book... it’s in the shops now! All proceeds to UNICEF’s work with Syrian children! Plus great recipes.
PLEASE SHARE… if anyone will be driving a truck from London to Ukraine in the next few weeks and has space for a professional bakery dough mixer (weight approx 350kg) destined for a charity in Kharkiv please let me know! Thank you
🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
I've just opened the new
@NigelSlater
book at a random page and seen the words "A crumble top" and "Marzipan and a suggestion of orange zest." I think we're going to get on rather well indeed.
@IuliiaMendel
I just came back to London from Ukraine and very grateful for the privilege not to worry about lack of light and heat. Here it’s turned quite warm, and I am off to work!
Made some
@NigelSlater
mincemeat hotcakes with leftover mincemeat and whipped cinnamon curd cream for breakfast and now might have to buy more mincemeat to have more leftovers for another lot!
This was in Odesa last month, people singing the Ukrainian national anthem in Deribasivska street, close to where 🇷🇺 just bombed the cathedral tonight. Horrific night for this brave and beautiful city.
More amazing Ukrainian bakers at the social kitchen Myrne Nebo Kharkiv making thousands of loaves of bread and buns for families in need in the de-occupied territories and Kherson
Finally met the fantastic
@IrynaVoichuk
in Kharkiv! Very grateful to be able to connect with her here in Ukraine - thank you Iryna for all your important insights into life during Russia’s full scale war
I made this apple, ginger cake and custard pudding from the fabulous new
@NigelSlater
book Greenfeast: Autumn Winter and I am very happy about this whole situation
Cooking from the new
@NigelSlater
book Greenfeasts and naturally pudding first - this glorious kind of plum cobbler with a brown sugar cookie dough crust. Such a fantastic book!
@daryazorka
That place is great! I also support a bakery in Odesa called DOU which bakes free sourdough for families in need - I went to see them in October, fantastic guys!
Visited another heroic Kyiv bakery making thousands of loaves of bread by hand to deliver to frontline towns and villages - thank you Peremoha craft bakery by Dubova!

Went to a lovely Ukrainian cafe in east London called TDO: we arrived just too late for the hot food (varenyky next time!!) but the Olivier salad and desserts were delicious
We are working away on the Bake for Ukraine mobile bakery in Mykolaiv making hundreds of loaves of bread which volunteers will deliver to Kherson. Four organisations are involved - and a team from
@GoodBreadKyiv
are baking!

On Ukrainian railways I took: 4 power stations, one generator, one very large suitcase, and a backpack. Plus they bring you a cup of very nice tea.
@AKamyshin
@OlKubrakov
Sending you all best wishes for the new job - you’ve done amazing things with Ukrainian railways, it has been a privilege to travel on your trains
I made many Thanksgiving pies. Pumpkin maple meringue pie, chocolate peanut butter caramel pretzel pie, pear and cardamom hazelnut tart, and an extra pumpkin pie with whipped chantilly cream, for luck. Happy Thanksgiving!
This roast red cabbage with tahini and wild garlic at Dizyngoff in Odesa is stunning. One of the special vegan dishes on their menu for the next few weeks.
I’m at the
@GoodBreadKyiv
bakery which does amazing work helping the least well off in society - the home of one of their staff members, Misha - was damaged in this morning’s missile attack and they’ve set up a fund to help his family repair it.
@Gerashchenko_en
House in London painted in 🇺🇦 - Ukrainian merch - volunteer chevron - team from Ukraine Sunflower aid delivering supplies from London to Kyiv
@OlgaPatl
You put it so eloquently. I’m with some volunteer bakers in Odesa baking sourdough bread every day to donate for people in need. They have already been though so much - they deserve the best!
@Churcheebs
Man goes into a shop in Soviet Moscow. ‘Can I have a pound of sausage please, thinly sliced?’ Shop assistant: ‘of course - when can you bring in the sausage?’
@maria_avdv
Solidarity and much love from me. It’s been my privilege to get to know so many amazing people in Ukraine. What an incredible and brave country. Разом ми переможемо!
My friend Katrya from Kherson region who escaped occupation to Lviv - has made amazing vegetable soup with smoked pears and sourdough caraway bread with rye for lunch - she is a phenomenon!
@strategywoman
This was from the other week in Shaftesbury in Dorset, a very lovely street made famous by being in a TV ad for Hovis sliced bread. I was there doing some food awards judging which is always a great experience!
