With over 1 million Ontarians accessing a food bank last year, food insecurity is an ongoing emergency in our province. This crisis is a result of decades of underinvestment in affordable housing and our social assistance programs, as well as a lack of quality jobs. More and more cities in Ontario have begun declaring food insecurity as an emergency, and we are proud of the work that Feed Ontario members @FoodBanksMissi, @FoodBankKtown, @DailyBreadTO, and @OttawaFoodBank have done in working with their cities and advocating for policy change to address the root causes of poverty and food insecurity. Addressing poverty takes bold action. Find out more about each of these members’ important work with their cities here:

When housing costs take up your entire income, there’s nothing left to budget. Many of our neighbours are struggling to get by, and unaffordable housing contributes to this. 76% of food bank visitors are renters, and @CMHC_ca found London was the only city in Ontario to have any housing affordable to low-income renters.

Times are hard for people in Ontario right now amid growing economic pressures. The initiative encourages those who can to direct their rebates to a charitable organization of their choice. By pooling resources towards organizations actively working to make a difference, we can collectively support those who are being impacted by poverty and escalating costs of living in the province. The organization highlights that individually we’ll have $200, but together we have $3 billion to support the public good, and many people are choosing to direct their donations to help address food insecurity in their communities.

It's difficult, if not impossible, to budget one’s way out of a cost-of-living crisis. Looking at the data, it's clear that food bank use is not being driven by any one person's choices, but by wider-scale systemic factors like a lack of quality jobs and unaffordable housing.

🎞️Watch the latest Fair Rent Ontario Vignette - @feedontario 's CEO Carolyn Stewart shares why Rent Control is a Food Security Issue 🍽️ 📅 Last year, over 1 million Ontarians relied on food banks, visiting 7.6 million times—the highest on record. Feed Ontario knows the root cause: 🚀Skyrocketing Rents. 🍝 Key Food Security Impacts: 🟣 3 out of 4 food bank users are market renters 🔶 Majority of food bank visitors have less than $100 left after paying rent each month. 🟣 22% of food bank visitors have rent costs that exceed their monthly income 💬 Key Takeaway: "Until we deal with the housing crisis, we are going to continue to see record-breaking numbers of people accessing food banks just to get by. We believe the province needs a much bolder vision if we ever want to get out of this crisis." 👉 Let’s take that advice! Join @feedontario in sharing with the province that bold vision of a future where all renters enjoy stable homes and secure futures! 🔗 Tell the province you support full rent control today: #DemandFairRent #RentControlisFoodSecurity

Hunger can affect those closest to us: our neighbours, coworkers, or friends. We’re working hard to support our network by providing them with fresh food, so they can help the people in their community. Last month, Feed Ontario distributed 333,380 pounds of food to our network.
