Combination of two major social tactics.
1. Semantic Wrangling - owning the word for your social purposes (in this case legal, there are many they use though - trauma, abuse)

A couple points:
1. There are men who marry women for access to their children. This happens very often, so the child abuse was the intention.
2. People who love or think they love the woman can often triangulate against the child for "ruining" their romance.

He's not denying the man is accountable - it's his fault she's not happy. He's commenting on women's refusal to communicate directly their needs because they prefer the social frisson of unhappiness to direct communication of needs (especially with concrete ways to improve)
