@Swagged88 @elonmusk If the paper were backed by some form of item with value, I'd agree. It's no longer backed by gold or silver, only the products you can buy with it. That's why the dollar is worth more in a place like Arkansas than California.

No, that's not all I thought about. Full digital currency reduces risk of theft, counterfeiting, and laundering. It costs almost $200m a year to mint new pennies and nickles alone. For 2025, the budget for operating presses, producing currency, and obtaining materials is almost $6B. This doesn't include personnel, utilities, building costs, etc. This would save the us on our federal taxes. Our currency isn't backed by anything like it used to be. I can't go and trade my money for silver and gold outside of just plain purchasing it somewhere, so it's only worth the products it can purchase. If you wanted to take all of your physical currency out of the bank, you could try, but if everyone wanted to do it, it would be literally impossible. If the banks decided to just close up shop, FDIC insurance doesn't cover all of it, and we are back to the bartering system as it is. More than half of all transactions in stores use credit or debit cards already. Removal of physical currency would remove the ability to counterfeit our currency, which is one of the primary methods for destabilizing a foreign nations economy. The US has done it in the past "allegedly" and those Chinese Supernotes are extremely difficult to track. If we switch to a digital federal currency, the government would be responsible for the transaction systems and if the existing companies want to hope to compete, they would need to reduce the transaction fees saving consumers and small business owners at every purchase. On the corner drug deals, illegal sex work, and mugging people such as taxi and delivery drivers who would no longer have cash on them would drop to near nothing making communities safer and more valuable to live in. The biggest threat is to those taking advantage of loopholes.ornperformimg illegal activities. There are already plenty of cashless businesses already and I almost never carry cash, so clearly it can work. It's obviously not something that could happen over night, and a lot of ground work would need to take place, but it could end up being a good thing.

@imanasshol @elonmusk So you don't use Venmo, cashapp, PayPal, Apple pay, google pay, debit or credit cards and only ever use cash in hand?

I never claimed to have thought it all the way through. What's the point of social media if it can't be used to start a discussion to foster better ideas and figure out which ones are bad. All I know is we don't have enough physical currency as it is, it isn't backed by anything other than the goods it can purchase, and no physical currency means no counterfeit currency.
