and he wasn't even lying cause even if rhaenyra became queen and granted alicent's kids mercy, hotd has shown time and time again that men conspire behind women's backs. daemon would be out there killing all of alicent's sons and helaena's too for good measure
petra and yasmin being forced to bear witness to this was crazy. when eric told yasmin there was nothing special about him and harper's relationship yeah he was lying bad
@alicentology
atp they're basically writing it with the expectation that most people watching are gonna be on their phone during the episode given how many times things get shown and then stated and re-stated
i love that matthew needham said larys knew alicent was hooking up with criston and was just happy that she was deriving pleasure from something. imagine if the whole time larys is working for the greens not bc he thinks they'll win but bc he actually kinda likes them
aw love how he started out as a shining white knight and became a hollowed-out tool of war ❤️ when you think that being a knight will liberate you and over time realize that the armor itself is your cage
thinking of larys as really wanting to help the greens bc he likes and relates to their dysfunction has fundamentally altered my perception of him. maybe manipulation is just his love language...
rhaenyra coming to talk to alicent in the sept DURING the war right after she just almost got got by criston's looney tunes assassination plot is way too funny. modern concept of lesbianism can't even hope to touch whatever it is they have
i'm not a fan of how they've handled the prophecy so far but i have to say that if rhaenyra is going to become a fanatical believer in her own supremacy and that all her actions are justified bc she's the promised savior then i am v excited to see it
@kingbealestreet
eric being reminded over and over again that no matter how high he climbs the people in charge will never think he belongs there has been so great this season
s2 is really weeding out the
#fake
alicels who wanted her to be well-intentioned and a loving mother because that would make her a "worthy" if imperfect character but no. she is vindictive jealous and cannot help but inflict her trauma onto her children and i love her for it
jace finally became interesting to me last night in the 11th hour of the season purely because his greenism jumped out like. being doomed by the very fact of his birth? by the sins of his mother? projecting his inner conflict onto other people? he and aegon need a support group
thinking so hard about how the "i'm a man and i'm relentless" scene only happened because eric accidentally and instinctively showed compassion towards rob and then immediately realized it was a mistake
the war shocking alicent and criston into realizing that the roles they've clung to their entire lives are actually completely meaningless and now all they want is to have a real conversation as people but they have no idea how to do that bc they never learned how. it's delicious
the way art smiled as he served. and patrick smiled back. because "we understood each other completely. it was like we were in love. or like we didn't exist."
the way this episode directly correlates alicent's frustration at being undermined by every man in her life including her sons and father with her having sex with criston bc there's at least 1 man she has power over and it shows in the way they framed the sex. i'm having a blast
targ stans who are obsessed with the divine feminine preferring young rhaenyra and saying it's a hate crime to masculinize her and the whole time she was moving like this
sorry i will never hate on criston showing up to his first day at his new job with a visible bruise on his face from when alicent smacked the shit out of him only to proclaim that he is immediately going to war and cut his bangs out of stress. one of the funniest guys ever
i always go back to "isn't it lucky that no one's ever satisfied" as a defining quote because it's SO eric and harper. talking about money as though they both don't know there's an emptiness in them and there isn't enough money in the world to make them feel full
posting this at risk of crucifixion from people who think fanfic is literature but at a certain point if you're making a lot of stuff up for your ship are you engaging with the text or just playing with dolls. like it's fine either way but they're not the same thing
criston literally thinking too highly of alicent to ever believe that she could genuinely love rhaenyra bc in his mind loving rhaenyra is a character flaw omg. by devoutly following and devoting himself to alicent he ends up flattening her in his mind too
so interesting how criston thinks him and alicent are connecting over their shared experience of being used by rhaenyra meanwhile alicent and rhaenyra hold genuine love for each other and he's only projecting his own experiences with rhaenyra onto her relationship with alicent
“Fabien Frankel and his ability to look unbelievably heroic on a horse. Honestly. I mean, love the boy to bits anyway, but seeing him mount a horse and gallop off with all that armor, my god — if I had ovaries, Jesus Christ. […] But I'm not seeing — because I'm seeing Fabien on
larys saw the greens having insane family strife, beating people to death randomly, passing down generational trauma, demanding to cut out children's eyes etc and was like yeah i wanna hang out with these guys for a while
i'm waiting for everyone to finally realize that slow horses is funnier than most comedies bc the showrunner is one of the veep/the thick of it crew so it's basically succession's cousin
hell he'd probably even throw in helaena for cause rhaenyra becoming queen sets the precedent that women can inherit too and he would want to secure his line on the throne. that dude LOVES to kill behind rhaenyra's back it's his favorite hobby
[in the dragonstone dungeon in s3]
alicent: what news from king's landing? how is helaena? is she safe?
rhaenyra who just came down to tell her that helaena killed herself:
@kingbealestreet
i think it's also harder to "fandomize" because the characters can feel fairly disparate rather than all the dynamics being overlapping and tightknit like in succession, which also wasn't built on ships (though it had them and that helped) but had a healthy fandom
loved this bit too - the show is so focused on its central characters you sometimes forget there are entire rooms of people who would do what eric did if they were in his position. you have to be a killer
love how eric clearly resented always being at bill's mercy. friendship wasn't enough to keep eric from getting fucked over by bill in s2 so it wasn't enough here either. although yes exploiting someone's terminal illness to gaslight them is definitely a dick move
@kingbealestreet
pierpoint basically being the worst place in the world that only insane people can thrive in kinda means that if you get pushed out it's actually good for you
criston snickering in a room full of nobles when alicent says something mean about rhaenyra's gay husband in driftmark and i'm supposed to not think they're hilarious together
raised by 2 emotionally repressed freaks who believe god will punish them if they ever do anything for themselves and their only outlets are violence + self-flagellation yeah these kids were never gonna turn out normal. when the father who steps up is actually even worse
the alicent and gwayne scene is so good man... alicent openly displaying an emotional need to someone else who picks up on it and is sympathetic/kind to her? never before seen
really wish they'd done more with him being from the ambiguously ethnic country and having had to fight his own people on behalf of westeros in order to earn knighthood but at least fabien is out here sharing the info he got from his wiki perusals
isildur is busy falling in love with a woman from middle-earth (as a metaphor for him falling in love with middle-earth as a whole and sows the seeds for him keeping the ring out of a desire to protect it) whilst arondir is out killing boars so they don't starve to death
@agneswickfields
i'm so endlessly fascinated by it like every time something breaches containment the fervor and pure madeupness of it just amazes me. and i know the drama around which headcanons are correct goes crazy too
imo eric's s3 arc isn't just about being young again, it's about being young NOW, in a world where harper sterns can be told by old white men that she's just like them. but he's the one who put her there. without eric there is no harper. sickening! amazing!
thinking about how eric's treatment of harper (and yasmin) is informed by him feeling his own age vs their youth but also by him having come up in a time when it was extremely hard for minorities in the industry. that's part of his underlying jealousy too... much to think about
@kingbealestreet
i'm 50/50 on whether it's going to be the scene konrad is talking about here or if it's going to happen earlier and this scene is smth even worse 😭 either way it's definitely happening
this eric and adler scene is so good it's making me breathless. the fact that eric hired him in the first place adds such a great layer to their dynamic too. ken leung we are gonna get you that fucking emmy
@saoirseegot
harper literally leering at him and reveling in his misery the entire time had me screaming out loud like everyone always says he's obsessed with her girl she's obsessed with him too
@kingbealestreet
i loveeee how he clearly knows the only way to save yourself is to get out (bc he fired harper as an act of mercy) and he's had opportunities to do that but he just can't bc he can't accept that everything he's done and everything he faced was for nothing
once you realize that the targaryens are functionally the bluths from arrested development (incredibly abnormal and emotionally incestuous due to their upbringings) hotd begins to make a lot of sense
i feel
#some
of her fans are going to be upset about how her motivations become twisted but given how rhaenyra has always seen the world through the lens of her own privilege and clings to the idea that her father chose her this arc would make the most sense to me
@aryasmercy
viserys totally ignoring it instead of actually doing something about it was actually pretty bad for rhaenyra and in fact showed that he really dgaf about helping her secure her claim. like he could have done a lot more LMAO
@saoirseegot
the space between "harp" and "take care" made me soooo crazy like omg. eric looking at a picture of himself at her age. so much to say but the enormity of his feelings in that moment rendering him speechless. finally just letting go of her & of all of it. I'm inconsolable
unfortunately that aegon and alicent edit has breached containment and has reached the "why should we feel bad for him" and "alicent is such a terrible mother she should die" audience. you guys don't deserve them
him smiling when aemond beats him in the training yard is like one of his only smiles in the entire show. aemond definitely came up to him at one point and was like "tell me about all the people you've killed" and criston told him and aemond was maybe a little too into it
harper trying to replace her BROTHER with ERIC actually makes me laugh in disbelief like why is she so crazy. why are they both so crazy. and then ken and myha'la are so sweet too like... they're basically oomfs to me <3
damn this new industry ep just hits the ground running huh. eric and adler as 2 dying men clinging to each other as the ship they've given their whole lives to goes down
qin haiyang's ridiculous aura helping the chinese swimming team achieve total cultural victory. i hope all these people tune in to the swimming world cup to find out he does that crazy anime villain intro every single time
it'll be kinda fucking hilarious if alicent just goes "hold on what am i doing" and saves herself from drowning at the last second. her kendall roy moment leaving us all in suspense for a week and then turning up alive like nothing happened
plus it would of course be cool to see her falling into fanaticism to justify her actions while alicent is simultaneously experiencing the exact opposite arc, realizing that the beliefs she's used to justify all her actions with are false ☝️
kind of captivated by the jace and aegon parallels i fear... two eldest sons who both doomed and were doomed by their mothers desperately clinging to symbols of targaryen legitimacy in order to cope with the fundamental contradictions within and without
alicent being mad asfk that aegon needs love in order to function bc she never got love and look how she turned out. she's so normal and emotionally healthy
the thing about alicent is that she can't really beat a lot of the allegations against her but all them make complete sense when you consider them in context. yes she's a hypocrite yes she's jealous yes she's selfish. AND?
me getting ready for hotd s2 as someone who actually understands both alicent and criston cole and therefore gets why their storyline together makes sense
i'm in the trenches defending fabien frankel's acting bc criston's entire job until s2 was to fade into the background and not be seen as a person. i believe he is directed to be blank and empty as possible, that's what makes his moments of unexpected emotion more impactful
china may not have won the most medals this olympics but when i saw that this tiktok of wang shun had 400k+ likes and he didn't even have his shirt off i knew we had won the real game
“Growing swimming as sport means we need to eliminate the longer races”
Swimming has grown more in one week with babygirlfying tiktok edits of an Italian rat dude sleeping in a park than whatever the fuck that hypothesis was
realizing that these are aegon's boys was KILLING MEEE when your terrible stepson becomes king and immediately nepotizes his gang into being your employees so now you have to deal with them during war
criston now being firmly aligned with aegon and aemond ohhh... while alicent's sons sideline her carelessly, criston will do it consciously, to try and "protect" her. a different kind of betrayal. it's such a great time to be a fucked up guinevere and lancelot enjoyer
@abortedamyadams
p sure it's canon that the first maester kinda sucked and then orwyle came in and made viserys live for another 10+ years. the GOAT maester
