The PA Consulting analysis report identified the prevalence of major eye conditions, Early-Stage AMD, Late-Stage AMD, Cataract, Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy, is expected to grow by 25% over 2022-32, seven times faster than overall population growth in England. The eye condition, cataract is expected to become 25% more prevalent over 2022 to 2023. This highlights the necessity for scaling up the Integrated Cataract Pathway to a national roll-out, having the potential to release 480,000 hospital eye services appointments per year, mainly through shifting pre- and post-surgery activity to community settings. The NHS Confederation has issued their response to a new report by PA Consulting, in which Primary Eyecare Services are pleased to have collectively commissioned with @Roche, @fightforsightUK and @The_AOP. Ruth Rankine, Primary Care Director at the NHS Confederation, emphasised: “This report shows the potential to shift more than 750,000 hospital eye appointments into community optometry and primary eyecare services, easing pressure on hospitals, reducing waits, and improving patient outcomes.” To read the full response from the NHS Confederation and for access to our article, click here: #ThinkOptometry
