COVID took one of my best friends Thursday night. Cholly Naranjo was more than a major leaguer, he was family. Our relationship was special despite our almost 50-year age gap.
The words didn't come easy. A thread.
THREAD - Common and Pete Rock's Brooklyn show was one of the best put together shows I've seen in awhile. From the interludes to the beat switches and song selections, everything hit. Photos & video in the🧵
I met Bill Buckner in 2011 at the 1986 Mets 25th World Series anniversary reunion. There was this kid who was reporting a school project - Buckner went out of his way to make him feel comfortable and answer his questions as if it was the first time he heard them. Class act.

When I was playing semi-pro baseball in Philly, one of my teammates who was 6'3" 210 said he was becoming a cop to, "Beat up n-----." At 5'9" all I could do was walk away. Didn't talk to him again. He left in like 2 weeks for the academy. People like this are on the force
Absolutely stunning photo of a young Minnie Miñoso. He told me fellow Cuban and Negro Leaguer Silvio Garcia taught him how to dress when he moved to the United States to play in the Negro Leagues. He is missed by many. A gentleman.
Spending Christmas quarantined. Tested at work on Tuesday. Got a negative result on Thursday. Woke up with a fever on Friday. Home test was positive. Took a PCR, waiting for results. Wondering if this could have been avoided if high schools were remote this past week ... 1/x
Not enough space here to describe the evening I had with Luis Tiant. Class, legacy, history, grace - a sincerity I have found only with the Cuban ballplayers from his generation. A legend - HOF as a player and person in my book.
Goodbye best little friend. Ten years ago, this cat jumped on my shoulders at the shelter. She's been by my side ever since. Today, she told me it was time to go. We should all be so lucky to have a pet so warm and friendly. Love you Cookie. Rest well.
My NYC teaching brethren - we don't report for another week - why am I seeing peers going in unpaid to set up their classrooms a week in advance? Enjoy what's left of the summer. Your room will be there on Tuesday with two days to set up around meetings.
Minnie Miñoso gave me an hour long interview when I first met him in 2009. We met about five times after that, and each time, he made it like he KNEW me from way back. He often told me, "anything you want to know, I'll answer." - He was the one all the older Cubans looked up to.
@GrahamAllen_1
Kids need more sleep. My students often travel 1-1.5 hours to get to school before 8am. We end at 3:30 PM. Factor in sports, extracurriculars, etc, many don't get home until 7-8 PM. After esting, showering and doing homework, many aren't in bed before 11 PM. 30 minutes is huge.
Roger Craig was one of the last links to the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Mets organizations. He died Sunday at 93. I spoke with him in depth about his time in NY with both teams. Enjoy.
As a high school kid, I was THRILLED to meet Buck O'Neil. The warmth in his smile. We spoke about a week earlier on the phone and he said he would look out for me. Welcome to the Hall of Fame.
@Dart_Adams
People are assuming he would have invested the $2 million (which would have bern about $1 mil after taxes & agent). Most people can't hold that much money and not spend it foolishly. If he gets 50/k year in royalties, it's equivalent to a 5% dividend on 1 mil. Smart move.
Meanwhile, NYC teachers have to get permission to do more than 400 hours of overtime (per-session) in any school year, and the rate is well below hourly pay.
NEWS: My god. $820 million. NYC taxpayers will pay *$820 million* in just overtime for NYPD this year. Could instead house all 14,000 homeless families in NYC. Then years of rent for 7,000 families out of work & at risk of eviction. With millions left over.
My friend is an 86-year-old ex-MLB player who is having severe financial problems as one of the alumni programs cut off his aid due to COVID wiping out their fundraising. If anyone is willing to donate, DM me for details. Any donation >$20 gets an autograph. Retweets appreciated.

COVID testing policy is ridiculous. Only 3 staff members were tested and a bunch were turned away because we hit the 10% cap. Also, the 3-5 day pre-registration for teachers is a JOKE - a barrier to purposely not test staff.
Received this e-mail from a graduating senior today. Sometimes you just don't know who you reach or how you reached them. A nice way to end such a tough year.
Sad news here - Tom Jordan, the oldest living ex-MLB player has died at 99. He played from 1944-1948 with the White Sox, Indians, and St. Louis Browns.
I met Whitey Ford and his wife Joan in 2010 at a private party to celebrate the grand opening of Darryl Strawberry's restaurant. We talked about his time in the minor leagues in Kansas City which got his attention. I sent him this photo and he called a few days later to thank me.

You purchase the property - tenants pay rent. The rent is the dividend / income on the property. Same for stocks. Plus rental income is treated as business income, which is taxed at a lower rate than earned income.
@dogsandcookies
I will add this one - how many of you left before retirement and aren't married? I ask because I am curious to how people are handling the health insurance.
What would you pay for this incredible 1955

signed spring training program by the entire team? Includes Robinson, Campanella, Koufax, Lasorda, Drysdale, Newcombe, Gilliam and Scully. Was posted to a Brooklyn Dodgers Facebook group.
Chuck Carr, key centerfielder on the inaugural Florida Marlins team has died at age 55 after battling cancer. He led the NL in steals in 1993. Also played for Mets, Cardinals, Astros and Brewers in eight-year MLB career.
Manhattan public school teachers who are also varsity coaches are going to get hurt from this. We use our cars to carry the equipment to games so your kids can play all over the city and get home at a reasonable time so we can be fit to teach after a 11-12 hour day.
@snohaalegra
I try to remind myself of a few things -
1) This isn't as bad as I imagine it to be
2) I am responsible for my success / failure
3) Nobody else really cares about the thing causing me anxiety
These reminders have helped me come down quickly if I am worried about something.

Also just as sad, the victim at 83, said she can't afford the medical care and is out there collecting bottles for the 5-cent deposits.
@MrChuckD
Common flipped "Resurrection" over "The World is Yours" which I think went over most of the crowd's heads - wasn't sure how many knew Resurrection. Nice Craig Mack shoutout in the verse too.
The amount of living Negro Leaguers are dwindling. Less than 10 are alive that played in the 1940s. One of them, Ernest Johnson of the Kansas City Monarchs died this month at 92. East-West All-Star and spent six seasons in the minors, batting .300
@FixingEducation
Accountability for students is dwindling - how much more work do they expect teachers to create for themselves for students who aren't doing the work as assigned and offers the litany of recovery methods stated above.
Rest peacefully Jim "Mudcat" Grant. A Black Ace on the mound and an extraordinary man every time I met him. Always gracious and willing to talk, even about the tough times during Jim Crow era segregation. Story coming later for my Forbes Sports column.
Had a chance to beta test

new app, which allows you to trace / prove ownership of your collectibles on the blockchain. Cool technology that can show how ownership moves on cards over time.

No one is saying make minor leaguers rich, but pay them enough so they don't have to live 4 people to a 1 bedroom eating ramen noodles.
Found this comment on NYC teacher blog regarding the upcoming UFT contract. Whomever wrote this is spot on about what will transpire. Fellow teachers, what are you willing to fight for? How many of you think co-workers will sign the contract because "it's better than nothing."
This is 42. Thankful for all of the friends and family who have helped me get here. Coming off Jackie Robinson Day, I think a lot about his mission to impact others and what number 42 stands for. Move forward, affect change, help others, spread love.
Gary Cooper, who played in 1980 with the Braves, fell one day short of an MLB pension. The

should do the right thing and sign him for one day - in fact, any

team can do it.

Kevin Maas sets a rookie record by hitting his 15th homer in just his 133rd career at-bat.
We then loaded up on his rookie cards and that worked out swimmingly for all involved.

Wayne Terwilliger died last week at 95. The baseball lifer played with Jackie Robinson, hit a game winner off Satchel Paige, but find out why he said his World War II service trumped anything he did on the baseball field.
Tommy Lasorda would tell you he had the best curveball in history; he also would knock down his own mom if it meant winning a game. More stories I was able to get from his

teammates over the years.
Many were already familiar with the new material, including the single "Dreamin". Common is SO CLEAR on the mic. (Bonus points for DJ DUMMY slicing in the Kool G Rap vocals). 🧵
Another slap in the face. The
@UFT
has lost all of it's bargaining power. In exchange for the days we worked during 2020 spring break, we are getting 5 vacation days in lieu of pay?! Mulgrew HAS to go.
A lot of fuss over the fan who caught Albert Pujols' 2000th RBI ball and kept it. I caught a Major Leaguer's 1st MLB home run, gave it to him, and we were unexpectedly reunited over 20 years later to celebrate.
@anndaraabrams
I see how worked up our students get over the exams and it just feels like a race to nowhere, especially if the private schools aren't taking them

I will say, the more I study personal finance - housing is an expense whether you buy or rent. People say you're throwing your money away renting, but the only way you can get the money out of your home is by selling it. You will need shelter regardless.
