People have highlighted the fact that the Louisiana abortion bill (arguably) bans IUDs and IVF, but can we talk about the fact that it says that any federal law or court ruling protecting abortion is null and void and that any state judge who overturns it will be impeached?

We're a small town — we don't need a huge news operation to get a decent sense of what's going on. But right now we don't have _any_ dedicated news coverage beyond whatever the already atrophied regional outlets can spare. If "democracy dies in darkness," then we're already dead.

The claim here is that the officer OD'ed because the bag of fentanyl tore open while he was arresting a man, and the fentanyl was on the man's hands. If that's the case, why wouldn't the man have OD'ed too? 🤔

In the first place, DOJ argues that FOIA exists to "shed light on the operations of the federal government," therefore it has no applicability to information submitted by state and local governments. 🧵

@ShellenbergerMD @adamjohnsonNYC Notably, Walgreens makes no mention of shoplifting (in the Bay Area or elsewhere) as a business risk in its annual report: Moreover, rates are meaningless if you don't know what you're comparing them to.

You've heard all about Britney Spears, but @HeidilBlake and @katiejmbaker reveal how guardianships allow more than a million adults to be stripped of their rights with little oversight or recourse in cases of abuse.

One thing I missed here. Biden's pardon also applies to people convicted of simple possession in Washington, D.C., which will help a lot more people.

Restricting this to convictions for _possession_ leaves out a huge portion of people convicted for violations of federal marijuana laws. Just 29 percent of federal marijuana convictions between Oct. 2014 and Sept. 2021 were for possession.

Many of the problems highlighted in the reports were predicted by experts I spoke to back in 2020. The DOJ's approach to implementing DCRA effectively destroyed its ability to accurately track deaths in prisons and jails.

I was bullied into writing the most recent newsletter column for @theappeal . I think I was supposed to write it about police use of force, but I decided to talk about bail reform instead — check it out!

In our latest newsletter, @jerryiannelli tackles the RICO case against Young Thug, which claims that, among other things, YT's 2016 song "Slime Shit" was an "overt act" in furtherance of a racketeering conspiracy:

More than 90 percent of U.S. adults have positive or neutral feelings about interracial relationships, but the ~9% who oppose them are the Weirdest Dudes Who Ever Lived. They've been all over my TL recently, and I'm not a fan!

Most relationships come about for pretty basic reasons (she’s cute, we click), yet this crowd require chin-stroking pseudo-intellectual explanations for why a white man could possibly love a non-white woman. They think they’re being normal & it’s everyone else who is brainwashed.

More than 600 people have been arrested at antiwar protests at colleges across the U.S. More than 50 prosecutors now must decide whether or not to pursue charges. @elizabethweill , @megoconnor13 , and @jerryiannelli asked them what they'll do.
