This day February 8th (1911) At the Essex Winter Court of Assize, General William Booth of the Salvation Army Farm Colony in Hadleigh successfully sued the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway Company for negligence. Earlier 8 cows had been killed and 4 badly injured by a train.

The two Crowstones pictured in 1984. The two stones stood side by side for 133 years In 1950 the older stone was removed to Priory Park however the sign on its base has since disappeared. Much more in Milton, Chalkwell and the Crowstone now available.

On this day February 6th ( 1967) Dorothy Calvert Managing Director of (pirate) ‘Radio City, the Tower of Power’ was charged at Rochford Magistrates court with violating the Wireless Telegraph Act. Radio City closed for good two days later. BATTELFIELD ESSEX Book shops or online

This day February 5th (1976) Mrs Barbara Jeffreys’ eight year old cat was savaged to death by foxhounds in Southminster. Mrs Jeffreys said the hounds tore through the hedge of her back garden and the cat must have died a horrible death.

The answer to Friday’s ‘Where in Essex’ is the Fox Connaught Hotel, now LB Newham. Opened, 1881 as the Connaught Tavern to cater for passengers on the craft berthing at the Victoria Docks. Now Grade II listed.
