Pleased to announce that today, at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity COP 16 in Cali, Colombia, we're sharing in the presentation and release of a report on tools for protecting the ocean. Our contribution is the IMMA network (280 Important Marine Mammal Areas and counting) that now form an essential part of biodiversity planning—spotlighting the habitats of whales, dolphins, seals, manatees, dugong, sea otters and the polar bear. At today's conference delegates and heads of state are learning more about IMMAs as well as other approaches for identifying and conserving marine areas of importance for sharks and rays (ISRAs), marine turtles (IMTAs) and overall biodiversity (key biodiversity areas or KBAs, and ecologically or biologically significant areas, or EBSAs). Our new report offers a brief summary of these approaches highlighting the biodiversity considered, identification process, and outputs and showcasing how they can be used to inform marine biodiversity planning. You can see a brief summary and download a copy of the report here:

Fin #whales breathe a sigh of relief. This year, at the International Whaling Commission #IWC meetings in Peru, #Iceland did not associate with pro-whaling camp, abstaining from 2 votes. As Iceland reviews its whaling policy, @nicolasestrup @OceanCare "there's huge hope & expectation to see Iceland endorse a shift in values to phase out commercial whaling--a major milestone." @CetaceanSociety @whalesorge
