Pleasing news: I'm writing a book! It's about Bowie and God and spirituality and all that good stuff, and will be published by Bloomsbury. Thanks so much to those of you who have supported my writing on the subject so far - this wouldn't be happening were it not for you

@DavidBowieReal @bonhams1793 @barnardos Sorry, I don't think the lyrics quote is in good taste - I'm sure you know what Shopping for Girls is about, and it seems a bit crass to refer to it here

@barneyronay About 98% of England matches seem entirely weightless these days. They just breeze on by. It seems to me more that McCullum is getting swallowed up in English cricket's death of meaning

@DrSusanDenim @PeterCl73638607 I agree he wants influence, but it's also about selling papers to different audiences. The commercial aspect shouldn't be underestimated. These are also Rothermere papers

Absolutely spot-on too about the tendency to judge opinions based on supposed virtues the people who hold them, rather than the virtues of those opinions The full column is here:

@DrSusanDenim @PeterCl73638607 I think it's a bit more complex in the case of the Mail and Express. The Mail's owner also owns the i, the Metro and New Scientist, while the Express doesn't really have billionaire owners - it's owned by Reach (which also owns the Mirror, Daily Record and loads of local papers)

@CapelLofft Torn on this. It feels that way, looking back. But Major evidently thought the nation was neither confident nor at ease with itself; he was speaking in 1990, but I'm not convinced things had improved dramatically by the era of NHP and BB

@Inevitablewest You were a comedy account before this (who on earth calls themself 'Inevitable West' and uses a profile picture like that without irony?) but now we're in a whole new dimension of hilarity. It's OK though, you can own up now - no one is beyond redemption

@RupertMyers Frit was a good hardy provincial word when Thatcher used it - when it's been used since, it's generally been in rather feeble tribute to her

@zoeharcombe Maybe your friends aren't representative of the nation and maybe not everything is a conspiracy? We've had quite a lot of sun here in Warwickshire

@oflynnsocial @RupertMyers Or we could follow the Dutch approach to imprisonment, which seems to work better

An essential work in this respect is The Singing Detective, which Mark Frost adored, and there are obvious similarities between Lynch and Potter (the great 'what might have been' is The White Hotel, which Potter and Lynch planned to make together but obvs never did)
