A Ballon d’Or winner, arguably the best player of his generation behind Messi and Ronaldo and two of the top 5 record Premier League goal scorers of all-time.
He is clearly the best, but the level of forwards he’s faced in England most weeks, for the past 10 years, have been nowhere near the elite level. The very best forwards of the last 30 years typically haven’t played in England. Would should have seen Van Dijk more regularly against the likes of Real Madrid & Barcelona. Essentially more fined technical & intelligent teams. Facing Suarez, Benzema, Messi, Cristiano, Neymar, Vinicius, Mbappé, types more regularly would have given him totally different problems. He can defend against 99% of PL strikers all day. Most PL strikers play right into his hands. You aren’t beating him physically, for pace, in a duel or in the air. A league with very few elite dribblers in central areas, you need forwards like Aguero, Isak types. You have to cause him different problems. He’s far too clever. It’s why Thiago Silva made Premier League football look easy at 36, without pace. Just too experienced, read situations well, and great in their air. Childs play for him. It’s not his fault, but the great defenders in modern football (Nesta, Ramos, Maldini etc) faced much harder opponents more often.
