With the Bill to be split, it is worth emphasizing that Parts 2 and 3 are also worthy of study, but it requires greater consultation, abandonment of some of the most problematic provisions. It was a distraction to Part 1 but important in its own right.

A difficult decision for Justice Minister Virani today, but ultimately splitting Bill C-63 was the right one. From the beginning, the core of the #OnlineHarmsBill has been about prioritizing the safety and well-being of Canadian children.

OpenMedia's advocacy of digital rights is invaluable to Canada. Civil society orgs are crucial to internet governance and we don't have many in Canada so the few we have carry a heavy burden. Helpful FAQ here and amendments.

RELEASE: Splitting the speech-chilling portions of #BillC63 off is a HUGE win for our rights and reducing harms. With reasonable committee work to fix remaining problems in part one, #BillC63 can now be a big win for Canadians.

Thanks @mgeist and @taylor_owen. With more time, I am convinced we could have solved a bunch of tech law and policy issues. The gist: Announce now to split the bill, get Part 1 to committee stat for thorough study and amendments, start building out the Digital Safety Office.
