Had a conversation today about whether or not children “know” they’re queer. I said, of course. This person disagreed. I explained how I knew in the 4th grade. They asked how I could have a memory so specific from that time. I told him that’s when Sailor Moon came out in America.
So a Black woman got a job white people didn’t want her to have.
They then did their best to make sure she was unprepared for said job, hoping she would fail.
But when she taught herself and managed to do the job AMAZINGLY, those white people got pissed.

This person tried to say something slick about media influencing children. I corrected him and said Sailor Moon did not MAKE me gay, it simply confirmed some things I had been questioning for years at that point. Yes, years. 2nd grade Elle had crushes on other little girls.
Do you know what else? 2nd grade Elle didn’t have the vocabulary, but she knew what the hell she knew about herself🏳️🌈. Books/stories at that age would’ve helped me hate myself less. Society at large and a lack of representation made it very clear something was “wrong” with me.
Then came Usagi and company. Sailor Moon is how I learned to love me (and Uranus). That’s what queer media does for queer kids. One of the many things it does. There’s no specific catalyst for this thread, I just felt like sharing.
Have a nice day! ✨💖💫
Being a bigot SHOULD ruin your life. Being a baby bigot should be met with consequence enough to have so much of a negative impact as to drive home the fact that being a bigot will in fact ruin your life.
A white man decided to terrorize the Asian community and murder Asian people, and the cops tried to make him sympathetic.
“Bad day.”
White supremacy is an entire trip.
It’s fine if you don’t like cussing in stories for YOUR kids, but don’t email me to tell me not to use that language in my books at all. I don’t care that you returned it. Are you going to return your actual kid? Because they cuss. Probably more than me.
Come closer.
The idea that a people can be born “evil” is a racist fantasy trope your bigoted author faves came up with back in the day, and has survived into the modern age because contemporary writers lack real imagination and all original thought. Oh, and more racism. Yeah.
“Racism in comics isn’t realistic because in the face of a global threat like Darkseid or Brainiac or something, humanity would band together and get over such divisiveness.”
......
*gestures at COVID, a present day, very real global threat that just made bigots more bigoty*
I wrote a few books about a bi Black girl slaying monsters and being magical as she travels between Wonderland and Atlanta, in case you’re into stuff like that.
#BiVisibilityDay
Also, to the person who messaged my website to say I should be ashamed for using "ghetto stereotypes" in Nubia, like naming her friend LaQuisha, that's my sister's name. Asshole.
Books with Black characters that are not written by Black authors are not Black books. Do not push them as such. They are also not diverse books. Do not push them as such. This is true year round, but especially during
#BlackHistoryMonth
.
If you show up with Nazis, and align yourself with their goals, you are now a Nazi. This attempt at sanitizing the “average folks“ like they don’t know what they’re doing, like they’re not whole ass adults, this is how we got here. Stop this nonsense, white people. Stop.
Some of them were Nazis and some came prepared for violence. Those are obviously not the people I am referring to. Many of them were average folks from rural areas, a category of people where the left has no reach, and in an area where it has no foothold
Ain’t you the one who called agents who represented WoC to yell about them calling out your client for writing a fluff piece about a white supremacist?
So, racists complained about a Black character being played by a Black woman in the Bleach continuation, the studio gave the roll back to the white lady. Which…yeah.
I hope publishing pays attention to the discourse re Black books and wanting stories free of BLM, racism, etc. I wrote Nubia years ago, for kids who wondered why heroes didn’t seem to care about or be impacted by these issues. Nubia is an answer to that.
One funny thing about Black Panther's success at the box office was how soooooo many non-Black people were convinced it wasn't gonna perform well and were surprised when it blew up. Even folks at Marvel. Meanwhile Black people knew what was up by the end credits for Civil War.
I'm still waiting for white folk to be angry enough to change shit. Like, for real.
People were willing to DIE to maintain the right to own other human beings. THAT is the soul of what you're up against. Being pissed a couple days a week ain't gonna cut it.
If you wanna talk about what SHOULD’VE happened, as a fan?
Sam SHOULD’VE given the shield back to Wakanda. There will never be another Steve/Cap? Cool. Give it back.
Bucky SHOULD’VE gone to the Dora about the needing Zemo to get shit done so they could be there/in on it.
One of these days we’re gonna have to talk about how depicting the realities of racism in fictional works is sometimes said to be “perpetuating victimhood” or “making a character weak/powerless,” and how that frames racism as something that somehow reflects badly on Black people.
Rachel Dolezal, who pretended to be Black for years, says she hasn’t been able to find a job for 6 years
“Being a maid at a hotel, working at a casino. I wasn’t able to get any of those jobs either.”
This is kinda how it feels when cops aren't charged for abusing and killing Black folk. Not exactly, but probably the closest non-Black folk are gonna get.
*Whispers* Hey, publishing. Stop giving IP work about Black characters to non-Black authors. This should literally be the easiest way for you to add Black authors to your roster, and you are STILL managing to FUCK IT UP.
Your whateverteenth reminder that
#PublishingPaidMe
was about showing the disparity between Black authors and non-Black authors specifically—born from the context of events during summer 2020—with the gap between white authors and authors of color being revealed as a result.
I don’t know who needs to hear this—apparently, a lot of y’all—but Black women are capable of telling our own stories. We don’t need anyone doing it for us, we got it covered. We just need resources, opportunities, and the same number of chances everyone else gets. Dassit.
Student: Is that book for check out? (Pointing to a book on display.)
Grimaldi: Yes, it is a fantasy book. It is really good.
Student: I want to check that out. I've never seen a fantasy book with a character that looks like me.

This is not surprising at all. Just pointing it out for the folks in the back who like to pretend they don’t see this mess when it happens at THEIR job.
NEW: A Maryland company has terminated one of its employees after he was apparently captured in a picture during the mob riot in the Capitol yesterday.

Imagine how helpful it would be if
@JoeBiden
were to show some grace, call on Democrats to stand down, practice the healing he keeps preaching. Why won't he?
YALL CANT JUST SAY “ELDERLY CELEBRITY IS TRENDING!!!” YOU GOTTA SAY WHY!!! SAY “ELDERLY CELEBRITY IS TRENDING FOR THEIR BIRTHDAY!!!” 2020 WAS ONLY THREE WEEKS AGO, WE STILL SHAKY!!!
OK, look, it’s 2021. If I tweet about specific things like racism and anti-Blackness, do not come behind me and reply with “and such and such“ or “don’t forget such and such“ Bitch, I know. But I’m talking about this right now. Stop derailing.
Yes! They got Trump on tape! That'll do it! It's not like this has happened before, where he was recorded saying shit that should be damning, and would be for most anyone else if not for white supremacy. Surely this newfound method of obtaining information will make a difference.
Throwing it out there for

, I wrote a few books about a bi Black girl who travels from Atlanta to Wonderland slaying monsters. There’s slick villains, epic fights, and Sailor Moon cosplay! Y’know, in case anyone is into that sorta thing.
When we can visit each other again, who wants to sponsor a Black Sci-Fi Fantasy retreat where debut and aspiring Black authors can come talk with and learn from those who've been at this for a minute with that genre focus? Looking at these publishers who said Black Voices Matter.
I’m finding more and more gray hairs, and I am unbothered! This has baffled some folk. They be like “you’re not worried about it all going?” Not. In. The. Slightest. I’m tryin’a be 60 years old and looking like Storm.
What's funny to me is y'all think Black women wanna give all our time and effort cleaning up these messes and fighting against injustice. Surprise, we'd like to be left in peace. What if Stacey wants to spend her time writing romance novels?

My kingdom for a magic system that doesn't link the "power" or "strength" of the magic to the wielder's emotions as a thinly veiled allegory for being too emotional = being dangerous and learning to suppress those emotions is the goal.
I have written over a dozen stories about Black people going on adventures and being in fantastical settings. If I want to write a book where I process just a few of the issues we’re dealing with today, racism and bigotry and white supremacy and the like, I am allowed.
The issue is, y'all think Black women are just supposed to sit there and take your shit. If we react in any way that isn't polite capitulation, then we're somehow in the wrong instead of the person who came at us sideways in the first place.
Every now and then I think about this dude from the very first writer’s group I joined.
I didn’t stay.
His name was Sergio. He wore a beret and scarf all the time—because of course he did—and said my work was “fine, if I’m okay with commercial trash” AKA speculative fiction.
I’m not here for white people claiming that they “had a lapse in judgment“ when they say or do some racist shit. When I have a lapse in judgment, I lock my keys in the car. I don’t knowingly seek to harm others in the defense of white supremacy.
There was we need diverse books.
There was own voices.
There was publishing paid me.
And so many other moments that called out the disparities in the industry. And, every time, centered folk hijacked the conversation or complained about being left out, and nothing changed.
