Hi Twitter.
I am starting as an Assistant Professor at Kent State University this semester! So excited to be joining the Sociology Dept and adding some more CJ ✨pizazz✨ to the mix.
@EliasNader_
will survey justice-involved young and emerging adults on their experiences in accessing education and training, as well as their short and longer-term perspectives towards the role of work within their transition into adulthood.
Any Crim/CJ journal editors looking for more reviewers this summer? I haven’t gotten any new invitations since Spring semester and I’m missing doing reviews. I’m open to reviewing anything in policing, life course, or reentry.
I am having my Fall undergrads attend
@CrimConOrg
sessions & submit (video?) reflections on their experiences.
Any one else interested in doing this? Love to chat about prompts/rubrics!
New paper out in
@CJB_Journal
:
This qualitative study examined how the four components of social bond theory function for young adults
I'm immensely grateful for all the young people who shared their stories for this work!

Week 1 as an Asst. Prof is in the books! Feeling very grateful and happy to be back in the classroom. I’m particularly excited to get some Masters CJ students to love (maybe just acknowledge 🤷♂️) research & analysis this semester.

My kids (4 and 7) have subjected me to all three movies in Disney's 'The Descendants' series today.

I'm very social media shy, as my family/friends very frequently remind me....
These scholars offered great advice on how to overcome this and WHY it is so important professionally and for students to see. Thank you all!

Thrilled to see this article! Interviews from my dissertation have similar results on how identity and social support influence the transition to adulthood.
Also, very encouraging to see some big names writing on this topic 🤓🤓

I use a music assignment in my theory course - students have to select songs (or albums) and connect them to theory and discuss policy implications based on the lyrics. I've had some of the most thoughtful writing come out of this assignment!

I’m curious if there was an extension, would we get some panels/round tables on the effects of COVID-19 on the CJ System - limiting prison/jail visitors, closing courts/community corrections offices, responses from law enforcement, etc.
Are you, or do you work with, a young person who has been involved with the justice system? We want to hear your stories!
Our goal in this research is to influence policy to better support young people in reentry. Your experiences & opinions can help shape what that looks like!
Trying to get a couple more for a second panel! Or maybe a round table on the transition to adulthood? Open to suggestions if anyone is interested

An illuminating thread from
@michaelsierraa
-- When "more training" is called for, we have to examine who is training, on what, and why they are doing it. Outsourcing to for-profit companies who espouse violence is dangerous to communities and officers.
Dave Grossman and his violence-glorifying training re-emerge in the news after many police killings. But Grossman is just the tip of the for-profit training iceberg. It's a world hidden in plain sight and it's way bigger than you think. 🧵:
Really have enjoyed being an evaluation partner on this important work in Baltimore - and excited to bring on the next cohort. Please share widely with any Bmore organizations/associations/communities!
Hey Baltimore! Applications for communities to join our next Neighborhood Policing Plan (NPP) cohort are now open. We know that the best solutions for a safer Baltimore are informed by the lived experiences of our residents. Applications open through 6/14:

Great resource for anyone teaching CJ analysis courses!
Just used this to help me update tonight's lab for creating a Bulletin/BOLO. Made the jump from having students do this in Word to Publisher/PowerPoint. Hoping it will be one more skill they take out the course.
I am so incredibly grateful to be sharing the stories of these inspiring youth working towards desistance.
Truly, I hope their experiences (and willingness to share them) can help to shape reform of both theory and practice for the benefit of generations of youth to come.

Do you have students looking up currents events at all? Our univ’s online learning center suggested this to me b/c it can get them engaged with looking things up, sharing materials, and discussing amongst themselves (via discussion boards, video posts, blogs, etc)

Findings:
-Attachment remains important, but looks a different for young adults (esp. romance!)
-Commitment & Involvement seem to become interdependent in adulthood
-Belief - maybe not so important for young adult desistance and behavior
